Sura 44: Al-Dukhãn (The Smoke) الدّخان

Sura 44 - Al-Dukhãn
In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[44:1] H. M.
حمٓhha-meemH.M. ﴿١﴾
[44:2] And this enlightening scripture.
وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِwal-kitābiBy the book / scriptureٱلْمُبِينِl-mubīnithe enlightening. ﴿٢﴾
[44:3] We have sent it down in a blessed night, for we are to warn.
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, weأَنزَلْنَـٰهُanzalnāhu[we] revealed itفِىinلَيْلَةٍlaylatina night,مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍmubārakatina blessed one.إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]كُنَّاkunnāwe wereمُنذِرِينَmundhirīnawarners. ﴿٣﴾
[44:4] In it (the scripture), every matter of wisdom is clarified.
فِيهَاfīhāIn itيُفْرَقُyuf'raqu[it] is made distinctكُلُّkullueveryأَمْرٍamrinaffair / command,حَكِيمٍḥakīminwise. ﴿٤﴾
[44:5] It is a predetermined command from us that we send messengers.
أَمْرًاamranA commandمِّنْminfromعِندِنَآʿindinā[at] us.إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]كُنَّاkunnāwe wereمُرْسِلِينَmur'silīnasenders (of messengers). ﴿٥﴾
[44:6] This is a mercy from your Lord. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.
رَحْمَةًraḥmatanA mercyمِّنminfromرَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lord.إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, [He]هُوَhuwaHe (is)ٱلسَّمِيعُl-samīʿuthe Hearer,ٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuthe Omniscient. ﴿٦﴾
[44:7] Lord of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them. If only you could be certain!
رَبِّrabbiLord (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَمَاwamāand whatever (is)بَيْنَهُمَآbaynahumābetween both of them,إِنinifكُنتُمkuntumyou [all] areمُّوقِنِينَmūqinīnacertain ones. ﴿٧﴾
[44:8] There is no other god beside Him. He controls life and death; your Lord and the Lord of your ancestors.
لَآNoإِلَـٰهَilāhagodإِلَّاillāexceptهُوَhuwaHim;يُحْىِۦyuḥ'yīHe gives lifeوَيُمِيتُwayumītuand [He] causes deathرَبُّكُمْrabbukumyour Lord,وَرَبُّwarabbuand Lord (of)ءَابَآئِكُمُābāikumuyour fathers (of)*ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former / past [ones] (*ancestors). ﴿٨﴾
[44:9] Indeed, they are doubtful, heedless.
بَلْbalNay,هُمْhumthey (are)فِىinشَكٍّshakkindoubtيَلْعَبُونَyalʿabūna[they] playing (heedless). ﴿٩﴾
The Smoke: A Major Prophecy*
[44:10] Therefore, watch for the day when the sky brings a profound smoke.*
فَٱرْتَقِبْfa-ir'taqibThen watch / waitيَوْمَyawma(for the) Dayتَأْتِىtatī(when) [it] will bringٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe skyبِدُخَانٍbidukhāninof smokeمُّبِينٍmubīninprofound. ﴿١٠﴾
*44:10 Only two signs are yet to be fulfilled, this smoke and Gog and Magog (Appendix 25).
[44:11] It will envelop the people; this is a painful retribution.
يَغْشَىyaghshā[It] will envelopeٱلنَّاسَl-nāsathe people.هَـٰذَاhādhāThisعَذَابٌʿadhābun(will be) a retributionأَلِيمٌalīmunpainful. ﴿١١﴾
[44:12] "Our Lord, relieve this retribution for us; we are believers."
رَّبَّنَاrabbanā"Our Lord!ٱكْشِفْik'shifRemove / Relieveعَنَّاʿannāfrom usٱلْعَذَابَl-ʿadhābathe retribution;إِنَّاinnāindeed, we (are)مُؤْمِنُونَmu'minūnabelievers." ﴿١٢﴾
God's Messenger of the Covenant*
[44:13] Now that it is too late, they remember! An enlightening messenger had come to them.*
أَنَّىٰannāHow / Whenلَهُمُlahumufor themٱلذِّكْرَىٰl-dhik'rāthe remembrance.وَقَدْwaqadAnd certainly,جَآءَهُمْjāahum[he] came to themرَسُولٌrasūluna messengerمُّبِينٌmubīnunclarifying / enlightening. ﴿١٣﴾
*44:13 The sum of sura and verse numbers (44+13) is 57, 19x3, and this Quranic code was proclaimed by God's Messenger of the Covenant (Appendices 1, 2, & 26).
[44:14] But they turned away from him, saying, "Well educated, but crazy!"
ثُمَّthummaThenتَوَلَّوْا۟tawallawthey turned awayعَنْهُʿanhufrom himوَقَالُوا۟waqālūand [they] said,مُعَلَّمٌmuʿallamun"a teacher / one who is well educated,مَّجْنُونٌmajnūnunone who is crazy." ﴿١٤﴾
[44:15] We will relieve the retribution for awhile; you will soon revert.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we (are)كَاشِفُوا۟kāshifū[ones who] will removeٱلْعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe retributionقَلِيلًاqalīlana little,إِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you [all]عَآئِدُونَʿāidūna[ones who] will return. ﴿١٥﴾
[44:16] The day we strike the big stroke, we will avenge.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayنَبْطِشُnabṭishuwe will seizeٱلْبَطْشَةَl-baṭshata(with) the strike / strokeٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓl-kub'rāthe great,إِنَّاinnāindeed, we (are)مُنتَقِمُونَmuntaqimūnathose who avenge. ﴿١٦﴾
[44:17] We have tested before them the people of Pharaoh; an honorable messenger went to them.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainly,فَتَنَّاfatannāwe testedقَبْلَهُمْqablahumbefore themقَوْمَqawma(the) people (of)فِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaPharaoh,وَجَآءَهُمْwajāahumand [he] came to themرَسُولٌrasūluna messengerكَرِيمٌkarīmunnoble / honorable. ﴿١٧﴾
[44:18] Proclaiming: "Listen to me, servants of GOD. I am an honest messenger to you."
أَنْanThat,أَدُّوٓا۟addū"Hand over / deliver (listen) [you all] إِلَىَّilayyato meعِبَادَʿibādaservantsٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God.إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I amلَكُمْlakumto you [all]رَسُولٌrasūluna messengerأَمِينٌamīnunhonest. ﴿١٨﴾
[44:19] And, "Do not transgress against GOD. I bring to you powerful proofs.
وَأَنwa-anAnd thatلَّا(do) notتَعْلُوا۟taʿlūyou [all] exalt (yourselves)عَلَىʿalātoٱللَّهِl-lahiGod.إِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, Iءَاتِيكُمātīkum[I] bring you [all]بِسُلْطَـٰنٍbisul'ṭāninwith an authorityمُّبِينٍmubīninclear / profound. ﴿١٩﴾
[44:20] "I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, if you oppose me.
وَإِنِّىwa-innī"And indeed, Iعُذْتُʿudh'tu[I] sought refugeبِرَبِّىbirabbīin my Lordوَرَبِّكُمْwarabbikumand your Lordأَنanlestتَرْجُمُونِtarjumūniyou [all] stone me / reject me / oppose me. ﴿٢٠﴾
[44:21] "If you do not wish to believe, then simply leave me alone."
وَإِنwa-in"And ifلَّمْlamnotتُؤْمِنُوا۟tu'minūyou [all] believeلِى[to] me,فَٱعْتَزِلُونِfa-iʿ'tazilūnithen isolate from me (*leave me alone)." ﴿٢١﴾
[44:22] Subsequently, he implored his Lord: "These are wicked people."
فَدَعَاfadaʿāSo he calledرَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis Lord,أَنَّanna"Thatهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāithese (are)قَوْمٌqawmuna peopleمُّجْرِمُونَmuj'rimūnacriminals / guilty / wicked [ones]." ﴿٢٢﴾
[44:23] (GOD said,) "Travel with My servants during the night; you will be pursued.
فَأَسْرِfa-asri"So travel [at night]بِعِبَادِىbiʿibādīwith My servantsلَيْلًاlaylan(by) night.إِنَّكُمinnakumIndeed, you [all] (are)مُّتَّبَعُونَmuttabaʿūnaones who will be pursued. ﴿٢٣﴾
[44:24] "Cross the sea quickly; their troops will be drowned."
وَٱتْرُكِwa-ut'ruki"And leaveٱلْبَحْرَl-baḥrathe seaرَهْوًاrahwanparted.إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, they (are)جُندٌjunduntroopsمُّغْرَقُونَmugh'raqūnaones who are drowned." ﴿٢٤﴾
[44:25] Thus, they left behind many gardens and springs.
كَمْkamHow manyتَرَكُوا۟tarakūthey leftمِنminofجَنَّـٰتٍjannātingardensوَعُيُونٍwaʿuyūninand springs, ﴿٢٥﴾
[44:26] Crops and a luxurious life.
وَزُرُوعٍwazurūʿinAnd cropsوَمَقَامٍwamaqāminand placesكَرِيمٍkarīminnoble / generous, ﴿٢٦﴾
[44:27] Blessings that they enjoyed.
وَنَعْمَةٍwanaʿmatinAnd pleasant thingsكَانُوا۟kānūthey wereفِيهَاfīhāthereinفَـٰكِهِينَfākihīnaones delighting / enjoying! ﴿٢٧﴾
[44:28] All these we caused to be inherited by other people.
كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThus.وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَاwa-awrathnāhāAnd we made it an inheritanceقَوْمًاqawman(for) a peopleءَاخَرِينَākharīnaothers. ﴿٢٨﴾
[44:29] Neither the heaven, nor the earth wept over them, and they were not respited.
فَمَاfamāAnd notبَكَتْbakat[it] weptعَلَيْهِمُʿalayhimufor themٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenوَٱلْأَرْضُwal-arḍuand the earthوَمَاwamāand notكَانُوا۟kānūthey wereمُنظَرِينَmunẓarīnathose given respite. ﴿٢٩﴾
[44:30] Meanwhile, we saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating persecution.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd for certain,نَجَّيْنَاnajjaynāwe savedبَنِىٓbanī(the) Children (of) إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَis'rāīlaIsraelمِنَminafromٱلْعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe punishment / persecutionٱلْمُهِينِl-muhīnithe humiliating, ﴿٣٠﴾
[44:31] From Pharaoh; he was a tyrant.
مِنminfromفِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaPharaoh.إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heكَانَkāna[he] wasعَالِيًاʿāliyanarrogantمِّنَminaamongٱلْمُسْرِفِينَl-mus'rifīnathe ones who commit excesses / transgressors / tyrants. ﴿٣١﴾
[44:32] We have chosen them from among all the people, knowingly.
وَلَقَدِwalaqadiAnd for certain,ٱخْتَرْنَـٰهُمْikh'tarnāhumwe chose themعَلَىٰʿalāupon*عِلْمٍʿil'minknowledge (*knowingly),عَلَىʿalāoverٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīnathe worlds / all people. ﴿٣٢﴾
[44:33] We showed them so many proofs, which constituted a great test.
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمwaātaynāhumAnd we gave themمِّنَminafromٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِl-āyātithe signs / proofsمَاthatفِيهِfīhiin it (was)بَلَـٰٓؤٌا۟balāona testمُّبِينٌmubīnunclear / profound. ﴿٣٣﴾
Expect The Same Consequences
[44:34] The present generations say,
إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāitheseلَيَقُولُونَlayaqūlūnasurely they say, ﴿٣٤﴾
[44:35] "We only die the first death; we will never be resurrected!
إِنْin"Notهِىَhiyait (is)إِلَّاillābutمَوْتَتُنَاmawtatunāour deathٱلْأُولَىٰl-ūlāthe firstوَمَاwamāand notنَحْنُnaḥnuweبِمُنشَرِينَbimunsharīnaever those who will be raised / resurrected (again). ﴿٣٥﴾
[44:36] "Bring back our forefathers, if you are truthful."
فَأْتُوا۟fatū"Then bring [you all]بِـَٔابَآئِنَآbiābāināof our forefathers,إِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] areصَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful [ones]." ﴿٣٦﴾
[44:37] Are they better than the people of Tubba' and others before them? We annihilated them for their crimes.
أَهُمْahumAre theyخَيْرٌkhayrunbetterأَمْamor areقَوْمُqawmu(the) people (of)تُبَّعٍtubbaʿinTubbaوَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand the onesمِنminfromقَبْلِهِمْqablihimbefore them?أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْahlaknāhumWe annihilated them,إِنَّهُمْinnahumindeed, theyكَانُوا۟kānū[they] wereمُجْرِمِينَmuj'rimīnacriminals. ﴿٣٧﴾
[44:38] We did not create the heavens and the earth, and everything between them, just to play.
وَمَاwamāAnd notخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earthوَمَاwamāand whatever (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of themلَـٰعِبِينَlāʿibīna[both] for play / amusement. ﴿٣٨﴾
[44:39] We created them for a specific purpose, but most of them do not know.
مَاNotخَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآkhalaqnāhumāwe created both of themإِلَّاillābutبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truth (*truthfully),وَلَـٰكِنَّwalākinnabutأَكْثَرَهُمْaktharahummost of themلَاnotيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna[they] know. ﴿٣٩﴾
[44:40] The Day of Decision awaits them all.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,يَوْمَyawma(the) Day (of)ٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣli[the] Decision (is)مِيقَـٰتُهُمْmīqātuhuman appointed time for themأَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall. ﴿٤٠﴾
[44:41] That is the day when no friend can help his friend in any way; no one can be helped.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayلَاnotيُغْنِىyugh'nīit avails / helpsمَوْلًىmawlana relationعَنʿanforمَّوْلًىmawlana relationشَيْـًٔاshayananythingوَلَاwalāand notهُمْhumtheyيُنصَرُونَyunṣarūna[they] will be helped. ﴿٤١﴾
[44:42] Only those who attain mercy from GOD. He is the Almighty, Most Merciful.
إِلَّاillāExceptمَنmanwhomرَّحِمَraḥima[He] had mercyٱللَّهُl-lahuGod.إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, [He]هُوَhuwaHe (is)ٱلْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzuthe Almighty,ٱلرَّحِيمُl-raḥīmuMost Merciful. ﴿٤٢﴾
The Disbelievers
[44:43] Surely, the tree of bitterness -
إِنَّinnaIndeed,شَجَرَتَshajarata(the) tree (of)ٱلزَّقُّومِl-zaqūmithe deadly food / bitterness ﴿٤٣﴾
[44:44] will provide the food for the sinful.
طَعَامُṭaʿāmu(will be) foodٱلْأَثِيمِl-athīmi(for) the sinful. ﴿٤٤﴾
[44:45] Like lye, it will boil in the stomachs.
كَٱلْمُهْلِkal-muh'liLike [the] molten lead / lye,يَغْلِىyaghlīit boilsفِىinٱلْبُطُونِl-buṭūnithe stomach, ﴿٤٥﴾
[44:46] Like the boiling of hellish drinks.
كَغَلْىِkaghalyiLike boiling (of)ٱلْحَمِيمِl-ḥamīmithe scalding water / inferno. ﴿٤٦﴾
[44:47] Take him and throw him into the center of Hell.
خُذُوهُkhudhūhu"Take him [you all]فَٱعْتِلُوهُfa-iʿ'tilūhuand drag him [you all]إِلَىٰilāintoسَوَآءِsawāi(the) midst / center (of)ٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmithe Hellfire, ﴿٤٧﴾
[44:48] Then pour upon his head the retribution of the Inferno.
ثُمَّthummaThenصُبُّوا۟ṣubbūpour [you all]فَوْقَfawqaoverرَأْسِهِۦrasihihis headمِنْminfromعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) retribution (of)ٱلْحَمِيمِl-ḥamīmithe scalding water / inferno. ﴿٤٨﴾
[44:49] "Taste this; you were so powerful, so honorable."
ذُقْdhuq"Taste!إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, [you]أَنتَantayou (were)ٱلْعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzuthe mighty / powerful,ٱلْكَرِيمُl-karīmuthe noble / honorable." ﴿٤٩﴾
[44:50] This is what you used to doubt.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰذَاhādhāthis (is)مَاwhatكُنتُمkuntumyou [all] used toبِهِۦbihiabout itتَمْتَرُونَtamtarūna[you all] doubt." ﴿٥٠﴾
The Righteous
[44:51] The righteous will be in a secure position.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous [ones]فِى(will be) inمَقَامٍmaqāmina place / positionأَمِينٍamīninsecure. ﴿٥١﴾
[44:52] Enjoying gardens and springs.
فِىInجَنَّـٰتٍjannātingardensوَعُيُونٍwaʿuyūninand springs, ﴿٥٢﴾
[44:53] Wearing velvet and satin; close to each other.
يَلْبَسُونَyalbasūnaThey wearing garmentsمِنminofسُندُسٍsundusinfine silk / velvetوَإِسْتَبْرَقٍwa-is'tabraqinand brocade / satin;مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَmutaqābilīnathose facing each other (*close to each other). ﴿٥٣﴾
[44:54] We grant them wonderful spouses.
كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThus.وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُمwazawwajnāhumAnd we (will) marry themبِحُورٍbiḥūrinwith fair ones / beautiful / whitened*عِينٍʿīninlovely / wide-eyed / large eyes (*wonderful spouses) ﴿٥٤﴾
[44:55] They enjoy in it all kinds of fruits, in perfect peace.
يَدْعُونَyadʿūnaThey will callفِيهَاfīhāthereinبِكُلِّbikulliof every (kind)فَـٰكِهَةٍfākihatin(of) fruits,ءَامِنِينَāminīnaones peaceful and secure. ﴿٥٥﴾
The Righteous Do Not Really Die*
[44:56] They do not taste death therein - beyond the first death* - and He has spared them the retribution of Hell.
لَاNotيَذُوقُونَyadhūqūnathey will tasteفِيهَاfīhāthereinٱلْمَوْتَl-mawtathe deathإِلَّاillāexceptٱلْمَوْتَةَl-mawtatathe deathٱلْأُولَىٰl-ūlāthe first.وَوَقَىٰهُمْwawaqāhumAnd He (will) protect them (from)عَذَابَʿadhāba(the) retribution (of)ٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmithe Hellfire. ﴿٥٦﴾
*44:56 As detailed in Appendix 17, the righteous do not really die; they move on directly to the same Paradise where Adam and Eve once lived. Compare this statement with the disbelievers' statement in 40:11.
[44:57] Such is the blessing from your Lord. Such is the great triumph.
فَضْلًاfaḍlanA bounty / blessingمِّنminfromرَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lord.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatهُوَhuwaitٱلْفَوْزُl-fawzu(will be) the triumphٱلْعَظِيمُl-ʿaẓīmuthe great. ﴿٥٧﴾
[44:58] We have thus clarified it in your language, that they may take heed.
فَإِنَّمَاfa-innamā[So] indeed, thatيَسَّرْنَـٰهُyassarnāhuwe made it easyبِلِسَانِكَbilisānikain your tongueلَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayيَتَذَكَّرُونَyatadhakkarūna[they] take heed. ﴿٥٨﴾
[44:59] Therefore, wait; they too will have to wait.
فَٱرْتَقِبْfa-ir'taqibSo watch / wait;إِنَّهُمinnahumindeed, they (too)مُّرْتَقِبُونَmur'taqibūna[those] who watch / wait. ﴿٥٩﴾
