In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[36:1] Y. S.*
يسٓya-seenY.S. ﴿١﴾
*36:1 See Appendix 1 for the detailed explanation of these initials.
[36:2] And the Quran that is full of wisdom.
وَٱلْقُرْءَانِwal-qur'āniAnd the Quranٱلْحَكِيمِl-ḥakīmifull of wisdom. ﴿٢﴾
[36:3] Most assuredly, you (Rashad) are one of the messengers.*
إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, you (are)لَمِنَlaminasurely amongٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿٣﴾

[36:4] On a straight path.
عَلَىٰʿalāOnصِرَٰطٍṣirāṭina pathمُّسْتَقِيمٍmus'taqīminstraight. ﴿٤﴾
[36:5] This revelation is from the Almighty, Most Merciful.
تَنزِيلَtanzīlaA revelationٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzi(from) the Almighty,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful, ﴿٥﴾
[36:6] To warn people whose parents were never warned, and therefore, they are unaware.
لِتُنذِرَlitundhiraThat you may warnقَوْمًاqawmana peopleمَّآmānotأُنذِرَundhira[it] were warnedءَابَآؤُهُمْābāuhumtheir forefathers / parents,فَهُمْfahumso they (are)غَـٰفِلُونَghāfilūnaheedless / unaware [ones]. ﴿٦﴾
[36:7] It has been predetermined that most of them do not believe.
لَقَدْlaqadCertainly,حَقَّḥaqqa[it] proved trueٱلْقَوْلُl-qawluthe wordعَلَىٰٓʿalāuponأَكْثَرِهِمْaktharihimmost of them,فَهُمْfahumbut theyلَاlānotيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūna[they] believe. ﴿٧﴾
[36:8] For we place around their necks shackles, up to their chins. Consequently, they become locked in their disbelief.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weجَعَلْنَاjaʿalnā[we] placedفِىٓfīonأَعْنَـٰقِهِمْaʿnāqihimtheir necksأَغْلَـٰلًاaghlālanshackles,فَهِىَfahiyaand theyإِلَىilā(are up) toٱلْأَذْقَانِl-adhqānithe chins,فَهُمfahumso theyمُّقْمَحُونَmuq'maḥūnaones who have heads raised up. ﴿٨﴾
[36:9] And we place a barrier in front of them, and a barrier behind them, and thus, we veil them; they cannot see.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeمِنۢminfromبَيْنِbayni between / before*أَيْدِيهِمْaydīhimtheir hands (*before them)سَدًّاsaddana barrierوَمِنْwaminand fromخَلْفِهِمْkhalfihimafter themسَدًّاsaddana barrier.فَأَغْشَيْنَـٰهُمْfa-aghshaynāhumand we veil them,فَهُمْfahumso theyلَاlānotيُبْصِرُونَyub'ṣirūna[they] see. ﴿٩﴾
[36:10] It is the same whether you warn them or not, they cannot believe.*
وَسَوَآءٌwasawāonAnd it is sameعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimfor themءَأَنذَرْتَهُمْa-andhartahumwhether you warn themأَمْamorلَمْlamnotتُنذِرْهُمْtundhir'hum[you] warn them,لَاlānotيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe. ﴿١٠﴾
*36:10 Everyone is already stamped as a believer or a disbeliever. See Appendix 14.
[36:11] You will be heeded only by those who uphold this message, and reverence the Most Gracious - even when alone in their privacy. Give them good news of forgiveness and a generous recompense.
إِنَّمَاinnamāOnlyتُنذِرُtundhiruyou warnمَنِmaniwhoٱتَّبَعَittabaʿahe pursued / followedٱلذِّكْرَl-dhik'rathe reminderوَخَشِىَwakhashiyaand he reverencedٱلرَّحْمَـٰنَl-raḥmāna(the) Most Graciousبِٱلْغَيْبِbil-ghaybiin the unseen / privacy.فَبَشِّرْهُfabashir'huSo give him good newsبِمَغْفِرَةٍbimaghfiratinof forgivenessوَأَجْرٍwa-ajrinand a reward / recompenseكَرِيمٍkarīminnoble / generous. ﴿١١﴾
[36:12] We will certainly revive the dead, and we have recorded everything they have done in this life, as well as the consequences that continue after their death. Everything we have counted in a profound record.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]نَحْنُnaḥnuweنُحْىِnuḥ'yī[we] give lifeٱلْمَوْتَىٰl-mawtā(to) the deadوَنَكْتُبُwanaktubuand we recordمَاmāwhatقَدَّمُوا۟qaddamūthey sent forward (have done)وَءَاثَـٰرَهُمْwaāthārahumand their footprints / wake / effects / results.وَكُلَّwakullaAnd everyشَىْءٍshayinthingأَحْصَيْنَـٰهُaḥṣaynāhuwe calculated / counted itفِىٓfīinإِمَامٍimāmina register / recordمُّبِينٍmubīninprofound. ﴿١٢﴾
Rejecting The Messengers: A Tragic Human Trait*
[36:13] Cite for them the example of people in a community that received the messengers.
وَٱضْرِبْwa-iḍ'ribAnd set forth / citeلَهُمlahumfor themمَّثَلًاmathalanan example ofأَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥāba(the) companions / people (of)ٱلْقَرْيَةِl-qaryatithe city / community,إِذْidhwhen [in the past]جَآءَهَاjāahā[it] came to itٱلْمُرْسَلُونَl-mur'salūnathe messengers. ﴿١٣﴾
*36:13-27 God's messengers have proof, advocate God alone, and do not ask for money.
[36:14] When we sent to them two (messengers), they disbelieved them. We then supported them by a third. They said, "We are (GOD's) messengers to you."
إِذْidhWhen [in the past]أَرْسَلْنَآarsalnāwe sentإِلَيْهِمُilayhimuto themٱثْنَيْنِith'naynitwo (messengers)فَكَذَّبُوهُمَاfakadhabūhumābut they denied / disbelieved both of them,فَعَزَّزْنَاfaʿazzaznāso we strengthened (them)بِثَالِثٍbithālithinwith a third,فَقَالُوٓا۟faqālūand they said,إِنَّآinnā"Indeed, weإِلَيْكُمilaykumto you [all] (are)مُّرْسَلُونَmur'salūnamessengers." ﴿١٤﴾
[36:15] They said, "You are no more than human beings like us. The Most Gracious did not send down anything. You are liars."
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,مَآmā"Notأَنتُمْantumyou [all] (are)إِلَّاillābutبَشَرٌbasharunhuman beingsمِّثْلُنَاmith'lunālike us,وَمَآwamāand notأَنزَلَanzala[He] sent down / revealedٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānu(the) Most Graciousمِنminanyشَىْءٍshayinthing.إِنْinNotأَنتُمْantumyou [all] (are)إِلَّاillāexceptتَكْذِبُونَtakdhibūna[you all are] liars." ﴿١٥﴾
[36:16] They said, "Our Lord knows that we have been sent to you.
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,رَبُّنَاrabbunā"Our Lord,يَعْلَمُyaʿlamu[He] knowsإِنَّآinnāindeed weإِلَيْكُمْilaykumfor you [all] (are)لَمُرْسَلُونَlamur'salūnasurely messengers, ﴿١٦﴾
[36:17] "Our sole mission is to deliver the message."
وَمَاwamā"And not (is)عَلَيْنَآʿalaynāon usإِلَّاillāexceptٱلْبَلَـٰغُl-balāghuthe deliveryٱلْمُبِينُl-mubīnuthe clear." ﴿١٧﴾
[36:18] They said, "We consider you bad omens. Unless you refrain, we will surely stone you, or afflict you with painful retribution."
قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey said,إِنَّاinnā"Indeed, weتَطَيَّرْنَاtaṭayyarnāWe ascribed a bad omenبِكُمْbikumin you [all].لَئِنla-inSurely ifلَّمْlamnotتَنتَهُوا۟tantahūyou [all] desist / refrain,لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْlanarjumannakumsurely we will stone you [all],وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُمwalayamassannakumand surely [it] will touch / afflict you [all]مِّنَّاminnāfrom usعَذَابٌʿadhābuna retributionأَلِيمٌalīmunpainful." ﴿١٨﴾
[36:19] They said, "Your omen depends on your response, now that you have been reminded. Indeed, you are transgressing people."
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,طَـٰٓئِرُكُمṭāirukum"Your fate / omen (is)مَّعَكُمْmaʿakumwith you [all]!أَئِنa-inIs it becauseذُكِّرْتُمdhukkir'tumyou [all] were warned / reminded?بَلْbalNay,أَنتُمْantumyou [all] (are)قَوْمٌqawmuna peopleمُّسْرِفُونَmus'rifūnatransgressors." ﴿١٩﴾
[36:20] A man came from the other end of the city, saying, "O my people, follow the messengers.
وَجَآءَwajāaAnd he cameمِنْminfromأَقْصَاaqṣā(the) farthest end / other side (of)ٱلْمَدِينَةِl-madīnatithe cityرَجُلٌrajuluna manيَسْعَىٰyasʿāhe running.قَالَqālaHe said,يَـٰقَوْمِyāqawmi"O my people!ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ittabiʿūFollow [you all]ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿٢٠﴾
[36:21] "Follow those who do not ask you for any wage, and are guided.
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ittabiʿū"Follow [you all]مَنman(those) whoلَّاlānotيَسْـَٔلُكُمْyasalukumhe asks you [all]أَجْرًاajranany payment / wage,وَهُمwahumand theyمُّهْتَدُونَmuh'tadūna[those who] are rightly guided. ﴿٢١﴾
[36:22] "Why should I not worship the One who initiated me, and to Him is your ultimate return?
وَمَاwamā"And what (is)لِىَliyafor meلَآlā(that) notأَعْبُدُaʿbuduI worshipٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One whoفَطَرَنِىfaṭaranīHe created / initiated meوَإِلَيْهِwa-ilayhiand to Himتُرْجَعُونَtur'jaʿūnayou [all] will return? ﴿٢٢﴾
[36:23] "Shall I set up beside Him gods? If the Most Gracious willed any harm for me, their intercession cannot help me one bit, nor can they rescue me.
ءَأَتَّخِذُa-attakhidhu"Shall I takeمِنminfromدُونِهِۦٓdūnihibesides Himءَالِهَةًālihatangods?إِنinIfيُرِدْنِyurid'ni[He] intends / wills for meٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānu(the) Most Graciousبِضُرٍّbiḍurrinany harmلَّاlānotتُغْنِtugh'niit will availعَنِّىʿannīfrom meشَفَـٰعَتُهُمْshafāʿatuhumtheir intercessionشَيْـًٔاshayan(in) anything,وَلَاwalāand notيُنقِذُونِyunqidhūnithey (can) rescue me. ﴿٢٣﴾
[36:24] "In that case, I would be totally astray.
إِنِّىٓinnī"Indeed, Iإِذًاidhanthen (would be)لَّفِىlafīsurely inضَلَـٰلٍḍalālinan error / astrayمُّبِينٍmubīninclear. ﴿٢٤﴾
[36:25] "I have believed in your Lord; please listen to me."
إِنِّىٓinnī"Indeed, Iءَامَنتُāmantu[I] believedبِرَبِّكُمْbirabbikumin your Lord,فَٱسْمَعُونِfa-is'maʿūniso listen to me [you all]." ﴿٢٥﴾
The Righteous Go Straight to Paradise*
[36:26] (At the time of his death) he was told, "Enter Paradise." He said, "Oh, I wish my people knew.
قِيلَqīlaIt was said,ٱدْخُلِud'khuli"Enterٱلْجَنَّةَl-janata[the] Paradise."قَالَqālaHe said,يَـٰلَيْتَyālayta"Oh, (I) wish (that)قَوْمِىqawmīmy peopleيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūna[they] know ﴿٢٦﴾
*36:26 The righteous do not really die; they simply move on to the same Paradise where Adam & Eve lived. They join the prophets, saints, and martyrs in an active and utopian life (see App. 17).
[36:27] "That my Lord has forgiven me, and made me honorable."
بِمَاbimā"in howغَفَرَghafara[He] forgaveلِىlī[for] meرَبِّىrabbīmy Lordوَجَعَلَنِىwajaʿalanīand He placed meمِنَminaamongٱلْمُكْرَمِينَl-muk'ramīnathe honored ones." ﴿٢٧﴾
[36:28] We did not send down upon his people, after him, soldiers from the sky; we did not need to send them down.
وَمَآwamāAnd notأَنزَلْنَاanzalnāwe sent downعَلَىٰʿalāuponقَوْمِهِۦqawmihihis peopleمِنۢminfromبَعْدِهِۦbaʿdihiafter himمِنminanyجُندٍjundinsoldiersمِّنَminafromٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heaven,وَمَاwamāand notكُنَّاkunnāwere weمُنزِلِينَmunzilīnathose to send down. ﴿٢٨﴾
[36:29] All it took was one blow, whereupon they were stilled.
إِنinNotكَانَتْkānatit (will) beإِلَّاillābutصَيْحَةًṣayḥatana blast / blowوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatansingle / oneفَإِذَاfa-idhāthen behold!هُمْhumThey (were)خَـٰمِدُونَkhāmidūna[ones] extinguished / stilled. ﴿٢٩﴾
Ridiculing The Messengers: A Tragic Human Trait*
[36:30] How sorry is the people's condition! Every time a messenger went to them, they always ridiculed him.
يَـٰحَسْرَةًyāḥasratanOh! how sorryعَلَىʿalāforٱلْعِبَادِl-ʿibādithe servants!مَاmāNotيَأْتِيهِمyatīhimit comes to themمِّنminanyرَّسُولٍrasūlinmessengerإِلَّاillābutكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toبِهِۦbihiat himيَسْتَهْزِءُونَyastahziūna[they] mock. ﴿٣٠﴾
*36:30 If the messenger presents solid proof of messengership, advocates the worship of God alone, and does not ask us for money, why should we not believe? (see Appendix 2)
[36:31] Did they not see how many generations we annihilated before them, and how they never return to them?
أَلَمْalamDo notيَرَوْا۟yarawthey seeكَمْkamhow manyأَهْلَكْنَاahlaknāwe destroyed / annihilatedقَبْلَهُمqablahumbefore themمِّنَminaofٱلْقُرُونِl-qurūnithe generations?أَنَّهُمْannahumThat theyإِلَيْهِمْilayhimto themلَاlānotيَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūnathey return. ﴿٣١﴾
[36:32] Every one of them will be summoned before us.
وَإِنwa-inAnd indeedكُلٌّkullunallلَّمَّاlammāwhenجَمِيعٌjamīʿuntogether,لَّدَيْنَاladaynābefore usمُحْضَرُونَmuḥ'ḍarūna(will be) [ones] who are brought forth. ﴿٣٢﴾
Signs of God
[36:33] One sign for them is the dead land: we revive it and produce from it grains for their food.
وَءَايَةٌwaāyatunAnd a signلَّهُمُlahumufor them (is)ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe landٱلْمَيْتَةُl-maytatu[the] dead.أَحْيَيْنَـٰهَاaḥyaynāhāwe gave it lifeوَأَخْرَجْنَاwa-akhrajnāand we producedمِنْهَاmin'hāfrom itحَبًّاḥabbangrain,فَمِنْهُfamin'huand from itيَأْكُلُونَyakulūnathey eat. ﴿٣٣﴾
[36:34] We grow in it gardens of date palms, and grapes, and we cause springs to gush out therein.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we placedفِيهَاfīhāthereinجَنَّـٰتٍjannātingardensمِّنminofنَّخِيلٍnakhīlindate-palmsوَأَعْنَـٰبٍwa-aʿnābinand grapes,وَفَجَّرْنَاwafajjarnāand we caused to gushفِيهَاfīhāin itمِنَminaofٱلْعُيُونِl-ʿuyūnithe springs, ﴿٣٤﴾
[36:35] This is to provide them with fruits, and to let them manufacture with their own hands whatever they need. Would they be thankful?
لِيَأْكُلُوا۟liyakulūThat they may eatمِنminofثَمَرِهِۦthamarihiits fruit.وَمَاwamāAnd whatعَمِلَتْهُʿamilathu[it] made itأَيْدِيهِمْaydīhimtheir hands.أَفَلَاafalāSo will notيَشْكُرُونَyashkurūnathey be appreciative? ﴿٣٥﴾
[36:36] Glory be to the One who created all kinds of plants from the earth, as well as themselves, and other creations that they do not even know.
سُبْحَـٰنَsub'ḥānaGlory beٱلَّذِىalladhī(to) the One whoخَلَقَkhalaqaHe createdٱلْأَزْوَٰجَl-azwājathe pairsكُلَّهَاkullahāall of themمِمَّاmimmāof whatتُنۢبِتُtunbitu[it] growsٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthوَمِنْwaminand ofأَنفُسِهِمْanfusihimthemselves,وَمِمَّاwamimmāand of whatلَاlānotيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know. ﴿٣٦﴾
[36:37] Another sign for them is the night: we remove the daylight therefrom, whereupon they are in darkness.
وَءَايَةٌwaāyatunAnd a signلَّهُمُlahumufor them (is)ٱلَّيْلُal-layluthe night.نَسْلَخُnaslakhuWe strip off / removeمِنْهُmin'hufrom itٱلنَّهَارَl-nahārathe day.فَإِذَاfa-idhāThen behold!هُمhumTheyمُّظْلِمُونَmuẓ'limūna[ones who] are in darkness. ﴿٣٧﴾
[36:38] The sun sets into a specific location, according to the design of the Almighty, the Omniscient.
وَٱلشَّمْسُwal-shamsuAnd the sunتَجْرِىtajrīit runs / flowsلِمُسْتَقَرٍّlimus'taqarrinto a fixed / determined placeلَّهَاlahāfor it.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatتَقْدِيرُtaqdīruit is (the) measure / decree (of)ٱلْعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzithe Almighty,ٱلْعَلِيمِl-ʿalīmithe Omniscient. ﴿٣٨﴾
[36:39] The moon we designed to appear in stages, until it becomes like an old curved sheath.
وَٱلْقَمَرَwal-qamaraAnd the moonقَدَّرْنَـٰهُqaddarnāhuwe measured / decreed itsمَنَازِلَmanāzilaphases / stagesحَتَّىٰḥattāuntil,عَادَʿādait returnedكَٱلْعُرْجُونِkal-ʿur'jūnilike the date stalk / curved sheath,ٱلْقَدِيمِl-qadīmithe old. ﴿٣٩﴾
[36:40] The sun is never to catch up with the moon - the night and the day never deviate - each of them is floating in its own orbit.
لَاlāNotٱلشَّمْسُl-shamsuthe sunيَنۢبَغِىyanbaghīit is befittingلَهَآlahāfor itأَنanthatتُدْرِكَtud'rikait overtakesٱلْقَمَرَl-qamarathe moon,وَلَاwalāand notٱلَّيْلُal-layluthe nightسَابِقُsābiqu(can) surpass / outstripٱلنَّهَارِl-nahārithe day,وَكُلٌّwakullunbut allفِىfīinفَلَكٍfalakinan orbitيَسْبَحُونَyasbaḥūnathey are floating. ﴿٤٠﴾
Invention of the First Ship
[36:41] Another sign for them is that we carried their ancestors on the loaded ark.
وَءَايَةٌwaāyatunAnd a signلَّهُمْlahumfor them (is)أَنَّاannāthat [we]حَمَلْنَاḥamalnāwe carriedذُرِّيَّتَهُمْdhurriyyatahumtheir ancestorsفِىfīinٱلْفُلْكِl-ful'kithe ship / arkٱلْمَشْحُونِl-mashḥūni[the] loaded. ﴿٤١﴾
[36:42] Then created the same for them to ride in.
وَخَلَقْنَاwakhalaqnāAnd we createdلَهُمlahumfor themمِّنminfromمِّثْلِهِۦmith'lihi(the) likes of itمَاmāwhatيَرْكَبُونَyarkabūnathey ride. ﴿٤٢﴾
[36:43] If we willed, we could have drowned them, so that their screaming would not be heard, nor could they be saved.
وَإِنwa-inAnd ifنَّشَأْnashawe will,نُغْرِقْهُمْnugh'riq'humwe (could) drown them;فَلَاfalāthen notصَرِيخَṣarīkha(would be) a responder to a cryلَهُمْlahumfor them,وَلَاwalāand notهُمْhumtheyيُنقَذُونَyunqadhūna[they] (can) be rescued / saved. ﴿٤٣﴾
[36:44] Instead, we shower them with mercy, and let them enjoy for awhile.
إِلَّاillāExceptرَحْمَةًraḥmatan(by) mercyمِّنَّاminnāfrom usوَمَتَـٰعًاwamatāʿanand provisionإِلَىٰilāforحِينٍḥīnina time. ﴿٤٤﴾
[36:45] Yet, when they are told, "Learn from your past, to work righteousness for your future, that you may attain mercy,"
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenقِيلَqīlait was saidلَهُمُlahumuto them,ٱتَّقُوا۟ittaqū"Regard the duty / learn [you all]مَاmāwhatبَيْنَbayna between / before*أَيْدِيكُمْaydīkumyour hands (*before you)وَمَاwamāand whatخَلْفَكُمْkhalfakumafter you [all]لَعَلَّكُمْlaʿallakumso that you [all] mayتُرْحَمُونَtur'ḥamūna[you all] receive mercy." ﴿٤٥﴾
[36:46] No matter what kind of proof is given to them from their Lord, they consistently disregard it.
وَمَاwamāAnd notتَأْتِيهِمtatīhimit comes to themمِّنْminofءَايَةٍāyatina sign / proofمِّنْminfromءَايَـٰتِāyāti(the) signs / proofsرَبِّهِمْrabbihim(of) their Lord,إِلَّاillābutكَانُوا۟kānūthey wereعَنْهَاʿanhāfrom itمُعْرِضِينَmuʿ'riḍīna[those who are] turning away. ﴿٤٦﴾
[36:47] When they are told, "Give from GOD's provisions to you," those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Why should we give to those whom GOD could feed, if He so willed? You are really far astray."
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenقِيلَqīlait was saidلَهُمْlahumto them,أَنفِقُوا۟anfiqū"Spend / Give [you all]مِمَّاmimmāfrom whatرَزَقَكُمُrazaqakumu[He] provided you [all]ٱللَّهُl-lahuGod."قَالَqāla[He] saidٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarūthey disbelievedلِلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those whoءَامَنُوٓا۟āmanūthey believed,أَنُطْعِمُanuṭ'ʿimu"Should we feedمَنmanwhomلَّوْlawifيَشَآءُyashāu[He] willsٱللَّهُl-lahuGodأَطْعَمَهُۥٓaṭʿamahuHe (could have) fed him?"إِنْinNotأَنتُمْantum(are) you [all]إِلَّاillāexceptفِىfīinضَلَـٰلٍḍalālinan error / astrayمُّبِينٍmubīninclear. ﴿٤٧﴾
[36:48] They also challenge, "When will that promise come to pass, if you are truthful?"
وَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaAnd they say,مَتَىٰmatā"When (is)هَـٰذَاhādhāthisٱلْوَعْدُl-waʿdu[the] promise,إِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] areصَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful ones?" ﴿٤٨﴾
[36:49] All they see will be one blow that overwhelms them, while they dispute.
مَاmāNotيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnathey awaitإِلَّاillāexceptصَيْحَةًṣayḥatana blast / blowوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatansingle / one,تَأْخُذُهُمْtakhudhuhumit will overtake / overwhelm themوَهُمْwahumwhile theyيَخِصِّمُونَyakhiṣṣimūna[they] dispute. ﴿٤٩﴾
[36:50] They will not even have time to make a will, nor will they be able to return to their people.
فَلَاfalāThen notيَسْتَطِيعُونَyastaṭīʿūnathey will be ableتَوْصِيَةًtawṣiyatanto make a will,وَلَآwalāand notإِلَىٰٓilātoأَهْلِهِمْahlihimtheir peopleيَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūnathey return. ﴿٥٠﴾
[36:51] The horn will be blown, whereupon they will rise from the grave and go to their Lord.
وَنُفِخَwanufikhaAnd it (will be) blownفِىfīinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe horn,فَإِذَاfa-idhāand behold!هُمhumTheyمِّنَminafromٱلْأَجْدَاثِl-ajdāthithe gravesإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordيَنسِلُونَyansilūnathey hasten. ﴿٥١﴾
[36:52] They will say, "Woe to us. Who resurrected us from our death? This is what the Most Gracious has promised. The messengers were right."
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,يَـٰوَيْلَنَاyāwaylanā"O! Woe to us!مَنۢmanWhoبَعَثَنَاbaʿathanāHe raised usمِنminfromمَّرْقَدِنَاmarqadināour place of sleep / grave?"هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)مَاmāwhatوَعَدَwaʿada[He] promisedٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُl-raḥmānu(the) Most Gracious,وَصَدَقَwaṣadaqaand [he] spoke the truthٱلْمُرْسَلُونَl-mur'salūnathe messengers." ﴿٥٢﴾
[36:53] All it will take is one blow, whereupon they are summoned before us.
إِنinNotكَانَتْkānatit wasإِلَّاillābutصَيْحَةًṣayḥatana blast / blowوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatansingle,فَإِذَاfa-idhāso behold!هُمْhumTheyجَمِيعٌjamīʿunallلَّدَيْنَاladaynābefore usمُحْضَرُونَmuḥ'ḍarūna(will be) ones who are brought / summoned. ﴿٥٣﴾
[36:54] On that day, no soul will be wronged in the least. You will be paid precisely for whatever you did.
فَٱلْيَوْمَfal-yawmaSo this dayلَاlānotتُظْلَمُtuẓ'lamu[it] will be wrongedنَفْسٌnafsuna soulشَيْـًٔاshayan(in) anythingوَلَاwalāand notتُجْزَوْنَtuj'zawnayou [all] will be paidإِلَّاillāexceptمَاmā(for) whatكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] used toتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna[you all] do. ﴿٥٤﴾
[36:55] The dwellers of Paradise will be, on that day, happily busy.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,أَصْحَـٰبَaṣḥāba(the) companions / dwellers (of)ٱلْجَنَّةِl-janatithe Paradiseٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmathis dayفِىfī[in]شُغُلٍshughulinoccupied / busy*فَـٰكِهُونَfākihūna[ones] in amusement (*happily busy). ﴿٥٥﴾
[36:56] They abide with their spouses in beautiful shade, enjoying comfortable furnishings.
هُمْhumTheyوَأَزْوَٰجُهُمْwa-azwājuhumand their spousesفِىfīinظِلَـٰلٍẓilālinshades,عَلَىʿalāonٱلْأَرَآئِكِl-arāikithe comfortable furnishingsمُتَّكِـُٔونَmuttakiūna[ones who are] reclining / comfortable. ﴿٥٦﴾
[36:57] They will have fruits therein; they will have anything they wish.
لَهُمْlahumFor themفِيهَاfīhātherein (are)فَـٰكِهَةٌfākihatunfruits,وَلَهُمwalahumand for them (is)مَّاmāwhateverيَدَّعُونَyaddaʿūnathey call (for). ﴿٥٧﴾
[36:58] Greetings of peace from a Most Merciful Lord.
سَلَـٰمٌsalāmun"Peace."قَوْلًاqawlanA sayingمِّنminfromرَّبٍّrabbina LordرَّحِيمٍraḥīminMerciful. ﴿٥٨﴾
[36:59] As for you, O guilty ones, you will be set aside.
وَٱمْتَـٰزُوا۟wa-im'tāzū"But stand apart / separate yourselves [you all]ٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayأَيُّهَاayyuhāOٱلْمُجْرِمُونَl-muj'rimūna[the] guilty ones! ﴿٥٩﴾
The Devil is the Other Alternative
[36:60] Did I not covenant with you, O Children of Adam, that you shall not worship the devil? That he is your most ardent enemy?
أَلَمْalamDid notأَعْهَدْaʿhadI enjoin / covenantإِلَيْكُمْilaykumwith you [all]يَـٰبَنِىٓyābanīO Children (of)ءَادَمَādamaAdam!أَنanThatلَّاlānotتَعْبُدُوا۟taʿbudū[you all] worshipٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَl-shayṭānathe devil,إِنَّهُۥinnahuindeed, he (is)لَكُمْlakumfor you [all]عَدُوٌّʿaduwwunan enemyمُّبِينٌmubīnunprofound / manifest (ardent)? ﴿٦٠﴾
[36:61] And that you shall worship Me alone? This is the right path.
وَأَنِwa-aniAnd thatٱعْبُدُونِىuʿ'budūnīworship Me [you all]?هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)صِرَٰطٌṣirāṭuna pathمُّسْتَقِيمٌmus'taqīmunstraight / right. ﴿٦١﴾
[36:62] He has misled multitudes of you. Did you not possess any understanding?
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed,أَضَلَّaḍallahe misledمِنكُمْminkumfrom you [all]جِبِلًّاjibillana multitudeكَثِيرًاkathīrangreat.أَفَلَمْafalamThen did notتَكُونُوا۟takūnūyou all [be]تَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūna[you all] understand? ﴿٦٢﴾
[36:63] This is the Hell that was promised for you.
هَـٰذِهِۦhādhihiThis (is)جَهَنَّمُjahannamu(the) Hellٱلَّتِىallatīwhichكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] wereتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūna[you all] promised. ﴿٦٣﴾
[36:64] Today you will burn in it, as a consequence of your disbelief.
ٱصْلَوْهَاiṣ'lawhāBurn therein [you all]ٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayبِمَاbimābecauseكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] used toتَكْفُرُونَtakfurūna[you all] disbelieve. ﴿٦٤﴾
[36:65] On that day we will seal their mouths; their hands and feet will bear witness to everything they had done.
ٱلْيَوْمَal-yawmaThis dayنَخْتِمُnakhtimuwe will sealعَلَىٰٓʿalāoverأَفْوَٰهِهِمْafwāhihimtheir mouths,وَتُكَلِّمُنَآwatukallimunāand [it] will speak to usأَيْدِيهِمْaydīhimtheir hands,وَتَشْهَدُwatashhaduand it will bear witnessأَرْجُلُهُمarjuluhumtheir feetبِمَاbimāabout whatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toيَكْسِبُونَyaksibūna[they] earn. ﴿٦٥﴾
[36:66] If we will, we can veil their eyes and, consequently, when they seek the path, they will not see.
وَلَوْwalawAnd ifنَشَآءُnashāuwe willed,لَطَمَسْنَاlaṭamasnāsurely we could have obliterated / made to lose brightnessعَلَىٰٓʿalāoverأَعْيُنِهِمْaʿyunihimtheir eyes,فَٱسْتَبَقُوا۟fa-is'tabaqūthen (when) they strived / soughtٱلصِّرَٰطَl-ṣirāṭathe path,فَأَنَّىٰfa-annāthen how (could)يُبْصِرُونَyub'ṣirūnathey see? ﴿٦٦﴾
[36:67] If we will, we can freeze them in place; thus, they can neither move forward, nor go back.
وَلَوْwalawAnd ifنَشَآءُnashāuwe willلَمَسَخْنَـٰهُمْlamasakhnāhumsurely we could have paralyzed themعَلَىٰʿalāinمَكَانَتِهِمْmakānatihimtheir placesفَمَاfamāthen notٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟is'taṭāʿūthey (would be) ableمُضِيًّاmuḍiyyanto move forwardوَلَاwalāand notيَرْجِعُونَyarjiʿūnathey return / go back. ﴿٦٧﴾
[36:68] Whomever we permit to live for a long time, we revert him to weakness. Do they not understand?
وَمَنwamanAnd whomنُّعَمِّرْهُnuʿammir'huwe grant him long life,نُنَكِّسْهُnunakkis'huwe reverse him / we make him weakفِىfīinٱلْخَلْقِl-khalqithe creation.أَفَلَاafalāThen will notيَعْقِلُونَyaʿqilūnathey understand? ﴿٦٨﴾
[36:69] What we taught him (the messenger) was not poetry, nor is he (a poet). This is but a formidable proof,* and a profound Quran.
وَمَاwamāAnd notعَلَّمْنَـٰهُʿallamnāhuwe taught himٱلشِّعْرَl-shiʿ'rathe poetry,وَمَاwamāand notيَنۢبَغِىyanbaghīit is befittingلَهُۥٓlahufor him.إِنْinNotهُوَhuwait (is)إِلَّاillāexceptذِكْرٌdhik'runa reminder / proof,وَقُرْءَانٌwaqur'ānunand a Quranمُّبِينٌmubīnunclear / profound. ﴿٦٩﴾
*36:69 The word "Zikr" refers frequently to the Quran's great mathematical code, which is certainly not literary, nor poetry. Please check out 38:1,8; 15:6,9; 16:44; 21:2, 24; 26:5; & 36:11.
[36:70] To preach to those who are alive, and to expose the disbelievers.
لِّيُنذِرَliyundhiraThat it may warnمَنman(him) whoكَانَkānawasحَيًّاḥayyanaliveوَيَحِقَّwayaḥiqqaand it prove trueٱلْقَوْلُl-qawluthe wordعَلَىʿalāagainstٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers. ﴿٧٠﴾
[36:71] Have they not seen that we created for them, with our own hands, livestock that they own?
أَوَلَمْawalamDo notيَرَوْا۟yarawthey seeأَنَّاannāthat weخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnā[we] createdلَهُمlahumfor themمِّمَّاmimmāfrom whatعَمِلَتْʿamilat[it] madeأَيْدِينَآaydīnāour hands,أَنْعَـٰمًاanʿāmancattle / livestock,فَهُمْfahumthen theyلَهَاlahāfor itمَـٰلِكُونَmālikūnaowners? ﴿٧١﴾
[36:72] And we subdued them for them; some they ride, and some they eat.
وَذَلَّلْنَـٰهَاwadhallalnāhāAnd we tamed / subdued themلَهُمْlahumfor them,فَمِنْهَاfamin'hāthen some of themرَكُوبُهُمْrakūbuhumtheir ride,وَمِنْهَاwamin'hāand some of themيَأْكُلُونَyakulūnathey eat. ﴿٧٢﴾
[36:73] They derive other benefits from them, as well as drinks. Would they not be appreciative?
وَلَهُمْwalahumAnd for themفِيهَاfīhātherein (are)مَنَـٰفِعُmanāfiʿubenefitsوَمَشَارِبُwamashāribuand drinks,أَفَلَاafalāso will notيَشْكُرُونَyashkurūnathey be appreciative? ﴿٧٣﴾
Powerless Idols
[36:74] They set up beside GOD other gods, perhaps they can be of help to them!
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟wa-ittakhadhūBut they tookمِنminfromدُونِdūnibesidesٱللَّهِl-lahiGodءَالِهَةًālihatangods,لَّعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumthat they mayيُنصَرُونَyunṣarūna[they] will be helped. ﴿٧٤﴾
[36:75] On the contrary, they cannot help them; they end up serving them as devoted soldiers.
لَاlāNotيَسْتَطِيعُونَyastaṭīʿūnathey are ableنَصْرَهُمْnaṣrahumto help them,وَهُمْwahumbut theyلَهُمْlahumfor them (are)جُندٌjundunsoldiersمُّحْضَرُونَmuḥ'ḍarūna[ones] who are brought forth. ﴿٧٥﴾
[36:76] Therefore, do not be saddened by their utterances. We are fully aware of everything they conceal and everything they declare.
فَلَاfalāSo (let) notيَحْزُنكَyaḥzunkait sadden you قَوْلُهُمْqawluhumtheir speech / utterances.إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]نَعْلَمُnaʿlamuwe knowمَاmāwhatيُسِرُّونَyusirrūnathey concealوَمَاwamāand whatيُعْلِنُونَyuʿ'linūnathey declare. ﴿٧٦﴾
[36:77] Does the human being not see that we created him from a tiny drop, then he turns into an ardent enemy?
أَوَلَمْawalamDoes notيَرَyara[he] seeٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe human beingأَنَّاannāthat weخَلَقْنَـٰهُkhalaqnāhu[we] created himمِنminfromنُّطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatina semen-drop / tiny dropفَإِذَاfa-idhāThen behold!هُوَhuwaHe (is)خَصِيمٌkhaṣīmunan opponent / enemyمُّبِينٌmubīnunclear / profound (ardent)? ﴿٧٧﴾
[36:78] He raises a question to us - while forgetting his initial creation - "Who can resurrect the bones after they had rotted?"
وَضَرَبَwaḍarabaAnd he set forth / citedلَنَاlanāfor usمَثَلًاmathalanan example (question)وَنَسِىَwanasiyaand he forgotخَلْقَهُۥkhalqahuhis (own) creation.قَالَqālaHe said,مَنman"Whoيُحْىِyuḥ'yī[he] gives lifeٱلْعِظَـٰمَl-ʿiẓāma(to) the bonesوَهِىَwahiyawhile theyرَمِيمٌramīmundecayed / rotted?" ﴿٧٨﴾
[36:79] Say, "The One who initiated them in the first place will resurrect them. He is fully aware of every creation."
قُلْqulSay,يُحْيِيهَاyuḥ'yīhā"He will give them lifeٱلَّذِىٓalladhīthe One whoأَنشَأَهَآansha-ahāHe produced / initiated themأَوَّلَawwala(the) firstمَرَّةٍmarratin[one] time;وَهُوَwahuwaand He (is)بِكُلِّbikulliof everyخَلْقٍkhalqincreationعَلِيمٌʿalīmunAll-Knower." ﴿٧٩﴾
[36:80] He is the One who creates for you, from the green trees, fuel which you burn for light.
ٱلَّذِىalladhīThe One whoجَعَلَjaʿalaHe madeلَكُمlakumfor you [all]مِّنَminafromٱلشَّجَرِl-shajarithe treesٱلْأَخْضَرِl-akhḍari[the] greenنَارًاnāranfire,فَإِذَآfa-idhāand behold!أَنتُمantumYou [all]مِّنْهُmin'hufrom itتُوقِدُونَtūqidūnayou [all] kindle / light. ﴿٨٠﴾
[36:81] Is not the One who created the heavens and the earth able to recreate the same? Yes indeed; He is the Creator, the Omniscient.
أَوَلَيْسَawalaysaAnd is notٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One whoخَلَقَkhalaqa[He] createdٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaand the earth,بِقَـٰدِرٍbiqādirinever ableعَلَىٰٓʿalāuponأَنanthatيَخْلُقَyakhluqaHe createsمِثْلَهُمmith'lahum(the) same as them.بَلَىٰbalāYes, indeed!وَهُوَwahuwaand He (is)ٱلْخَلَّـٰقُl-khalāquthe Creator,ٱلْعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuthe Omniscient. ﴿٨١﴾
[36:82] All He needs to do to carry out any command is say to it, "Be," and it is.
إِنَّمَآinnamāOnlyأَمْرُهُۥٓamruhuHis commandإِذَآidhāwhenأَرَادَarādaHe intended / willedشَيْـًٔاshayana thingأَنanthatيَقُولَyaqūlaHe saysلَهُۥlahuto it,كُنkun"Be,"فَيَكُونُfayakūnuand it becomes. ﴿٨٢﴾
[36:83] Therefore, glory be to the One in whose hand is the sovereignty over all things, and to Him you will be returned.*
فَسُبْحَـٰنَfasub'ḥānaSo glory beٱلَّذِىalladhī(to) the One whoبِيَدِهِۦbiyadihiin His hand (is)مَلَكُوتُmalakūtu(the) dominions / sovereigntiesكُلِّkulli(of) allشَىْءٍshayinthing(s),وَإِلَيْهِwa-ilayhiand to Himتُرْجَعُونَtur'jaʿūnayou [all] will return. ﴿٨٣﴾
*36:83 It is noteworthy that the gematrical value of "Rashad" (505), plus the gematrical value of "Khalifa" (725), plus the sura number (36), plus the number of verses (83), produces a total that is a multiple of 19 (505+725+36+83=1349=19x71). Also, Sura 36 is number 19 among the 29 initialed suras.
