Sura 70: Al-Ma‘aarej (The Heights) المعارج

Sura 70 - Al-Ma‘aarej
In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[70:1] A questioner may question the inevitable retribution.
سَأَلَsa-ala[He] askedسَآئِلٌۢsāiluna questionerبِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābinabout a retributionوَاقِعٍwāqiʿininevitable. ﴿١﴾
[70:2] For the disbelievers, none can stop it.
لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَlil'kāfirīnaTo the disbelievers,لَيْسَlaysanotلَهُۥlahufor itدَافِعٌdāfiʿun(any) averter. ﴿٢﴾
[70:3] From GOD; Possessor of the highest Height.
مِّنَminaFromٱللَّهِl-lahiGod,ذِىdhīPossessor ofٱلْمَعَارِجِl-maʿārijithe ways of ascent / stairways / highest Height. ﴿٣﴾
[70:4] The angels, with their reports, climb to Him in a day that equals fifty thousand years.
تَعْرُجُtaʿruju[It] ascends / climbsٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe angelsوَٱلرُّوحُwal-rūḥuand the Spiritإِلَيْهِilayhito Himفِىinيَوْمٍyawmina day,كَانَkānait wasمِقْدَارُهُۥmiq'dāruhuits measure (is)خَمْسِينَkhamsīnafiftyأَلْفَalfathousandسَنَةٍsanatinyear(s). ﴿٤﴾
[70:5] Therefore, you shall resort to a gracious patience.
فَٱصْبِرْfa-iṣ'birSo be patient,صَبْرًاṣabrana patienceجَمِيلًاjamīlanbeautiful / good / gracious. ﴿٥﴾
[70:6] For they see it far away.
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyيَرَوْنَهُۥyarawnahu[they] see itبَعِيدًاbaʿīdanfar away. ﴿٦﴾
[70:7] While we see it very close.
وَنَرَىٰهُwanarāhuBut we see itقَرِيبًاqarībannear. ﴿٧﴾
[70:8] The day will come when the sky will be like molten rocks.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayتَكُونُtakūnu[it] will beٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe skyكَٱلْمُهْلِkal-muh'lilike [the] molten lead / copper / rocks. ﴿٨﴾
[70:9] The mountains will be like fluffy wool.
وَتَكُونُwatakūnuAnd [it] will beٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsكَٱلْعِهْنِkal-ʿih'nilike [the] wool. ﴿٩﴾
[70:10] No friend will care about his close friend.
وَلَاwalāAnd notيَسْـَٔلُyasalu[he] will askحَمِيمٌḥamīmuna friendحَمِيمًاḥamīman(about) a close friend. ﴿١٠﴾
[70:11] When they see them, the guilty will wish he could give his own children as ransom, to spare him the retribution of that day.
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْyubaṣṣarūnahumThey will see them,يَوَدُّyawaddu[he] will wishٱلْمُجْرِمُl-muj'rimuthe guilty oneلَوْlawifيَفْتَدِىyaftadīhe ransomsمِنْminfromعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) retribution (of)يَوْمِئِذٍۭyawmi-idhinthat Dayبِبَنِيهِbibanīhiby his children. ﴿١١﴾
[70:12] Also his spouse, and his brother.
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦwaṣāḥibatihiAnd his wife / spouse,وَأَخِيهِwa-akhīhiand his brother. ﴿١٢﴾
[70:13] Even his whole tribe that raised him.
وَفَصِيلَتِهِwafaṣīlatihiAnd his tribeٱلَّتِىallatīwhichتُـْٔوِيهِtu'wīhi[it] sheltered him. ﴿١٣﴾
[70:14] Even all the people on earth, if it would save him.
وَمَنwamanAnd whoeverفِى(is) onٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthجَمِيعًاjamīʿanall,ثُمَّthummathenيُنجِيهِyunjīhiit (could) save him. ﴿١٤﴾
[70:15] No; it is aflame.
كَلَّآkallāNo!إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it (is)لَظَىٰlaẓāaflame. ﴿١٥﴾
[70:16] Eager to burn.
نَزَّاعَةًnazzāʿatanStripping to the extremities / Scaldingلِّلشَّوَىٰlilshawāof the skin / to scald. ﴿١٦﴾
[70:17] It calls on those who turned away.
تَدْعُوا۟tadʿūIt invites / callsمَنْman(him) whoأَدْبَرَadbarahe turned backوَتَوَلَّىٰwatawallāand he turned away. ﴿١٧﴾
[70:18] Those who hoarded and counted.
وَجَمَعَwajamaʿaAnd he collected / gatheredفَأَوْعَىٰٓfa-awʿāand he collected / hoarded. ﴿١٨﴾
[70:19] Indeed, the human being is anxious.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe human beingخُلِقَkhuliqa[he] was originated / initiated / createdهَلُوعًاhalūʿanvery impatient / anxious. ﴿١٩﴾
[70:20] If touched by adversity, despondent.
إِذَاidhāWhenمَسَّهُmassahu[it] touched / afflicted himٱلشَّرُّl-sharuthe evil / adversity,جَزُوعًاjazūʿan(he is) despondent. ﴿٢٠﴾
[70:21] If blessed by wealth, stingy.
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenمَسَّهُmassahuit touched / afflicted himٱلْخَيْرُl-khayruthe good / wealth,مَنُوعًاmanūʿan(he) holds back (stingy), ﴿٢١﴾
[70:22] Except for the worshipers.
إِلَّاillāExceptٱلْمُصَلِّينَl-muṣalīnathe ones who pray / worshipers ﴿٢٢﴾
[70:23] Who always observe their contact prayers (Salat).
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoهُمْhumthey (are)عَلَىٰʿalāoverصَلَاتِهِمْṣalātihimtheir Contact Prayers (Salat)دَآئِمُونَdāimūnaones who remain constant and steadfast. ﴿٢٣﴾
[70:24] Part of their money is set aside.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoفِىٓinأَمْوَٰلِهِمْamwālihimtheir wealth (is)حَقٌّḥaqquna right / dueمَّعْلُومٌmaʿlūmunknown / determined / fixed / specified. ﴿٢٤﴾
[70:25] For the poor and the needy.
لِّلسَّآئِلِlilssāiliFor the one who asks / beggarوَٱلْمَحْرُومِwal-maḥrūmiand the needy / poor. ﴿٢٥﴾
[70:26] They believe in the Day of Judgment.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoيُصَدِّقُونَyuṣaddiqūna[they] accept the truth / believeبِيَوْمِbiyawmiof (the) Day (of)ٱلدِّينِl-dīni[the] Judgment. ﴿٢٦﴾
[70:27] They reverence their Lord's requital.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمhumthey (are)مِّنْminofعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) requitalرَبِّهِمrabbihim(of) their Lordمُّشْفِقُونَmush'fiqūnafearful / reverence ones. ﴿٢٧﴾
[70:28] Their Lord's requital is not taken for granted.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,عَذَابَʿadhāba(the) requital (of)رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lord (is)غَيْرُghayrunotمَأْمُونٍmamūninone to be taken for granted. ﴿٢٨﴾
[70:29] They keep their chastity.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمْhumthey (are)لِفُرُوجِهِمْlifurūjihimof their chastityحَـٰفِظُونَḥāfiẓūnaguardians. ﴿٢٩﴾
[70:30] (They have relations) only with their spouses, or what is legally theirs -
إِلَّاillāExceptعَلَىٰٓʿalāfromأَزْوَٰجِهِمْazwājihimtheir spousesأَوْaworمَاwhat*مَلَكَتْmalakat[it] possessed / taken [as a wife]*أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْaymānuhumtheir oaths / vows (*what is legally theirs / common law marriages)فَإِنَّهُمْfa-innahumthen indeed, they (are)غَيْرُghayrunotمَلُومِينَmalūmīna[ones] blameworthy. ﴿٣٠﴾
[70:31] anyone who transgresses these limits is a sinner -
فَمَنِfamaniBut whoeverٱبْتَغَىٰib'taghāhe soughtوَرَآءَwarāabeyondذَٰلِكَdhālikathat,فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen thoseهُمُhumuthey (are)ٱلْعَادُونَl-ʿādūnathe transgressors. ﴿٣١﴾
[70:32] And the believers keep their word; they are trustworthy.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمْhumthey (are)لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْli-amānātihimof their trusts / integrityوَعَهْدِهِمْwaʿahdihimand their promise / covenantرَٰعُونَrāʿūnakeepers / guardians / observers. ﴿٣٢﴾
[70:33] Their testimony is truthful.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمhumtheyبِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْbishahādātihimin their testimoniesقَآئِمُونَqāimūnaones who stand up firmly / are upright (people). ﴿٣٣﴾
[70:34] They consistently observe their contact prayers (Salat), on time.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who,هُمْhumtheyعَلَىٰʿalāoverصَلَاتِهِمْṣalātihimtheir Contact Prayers (Salat)يُحَافِظُونَyuḥāfiẓūnathey keep guard / preserve / maintain / constant. ﴿٣٤﴾
[70:35] They have deserved a position of honor, in Paradise.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseفِى(will be) inجَنَّـٰتٍjannātinParadise,مُّكْرَمُونَmuk'ramūnaones who are honored. ﴿٣٥﴾
[70:36] What is keeping those who disbelieved from joining you?
فَمَالِfamāliSo how comeٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelieved,قِبَلَكَqibalakabefore you / towards you مُهْطِعِينَmuh'ṭiʿīnaones running in haste or panic / rushing? ﴿٣٦﴾
[70:37] To the right, and to the left, they flee.
عَنِʿaniFromٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīnithe rightوَعَنِwaʿaniand onٱلشِّمَالِl-shimālithe left,عِزِينَʿizīna(in) crowds / groups? ﴿٣٧﴾
[70:38] How can any of them expect to enter the blissful Paradise?
أَيَطْمَعُayaṭmaʿuDoes [he] hope / wishfully thinkكُلُّkullueveryٱمْرِئٍim'ri-inperson,مِّنْهُمْmin'humamong themأَنanthatيُدْخَلَyud'khalahe entersجَنَّةَjannataa Paradise (of)نَعِيمٍnaʿīmindelight / bliss? ﴿٣٨﴾
[70:39] Never; we created them, and they know from what.
كَلَّآkallāNo! / Never!إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weخَلَقْنَـٰهُمkhalaqnāhum[we] created themمِّمَّاmimmāfrom whatيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know. ﴿٣٩﴾
[70:40] I solemnly swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests; we are able -
فَلَآfalāBut nay!أُقْسِمُuq'simuI swearبِرَبِّbirabbiby (the) Lord (of)ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِl-mashāriqithe place of risings / eastsوَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِwal-maghāribiand the place of settings / wests,إِنَّاinnāindeed we (are)لَقَـٰدِرُونَlaqādirūnasurely ones who are able - ﴿٤٠﴾
[70:41] to substitute better people in your place; we can never be defeated.
عَلَىٰٓʿalāoverأَنanthatنُّبَدِّلَnubaddila[we] substituteخَيْرًاkhayran(with) betterمِّنْهُمْmin'humthan them;وَمَاwamāand notنَحْنُnaḥnuwe (are)بِمَسْبُوقِينَbimasbūqīnaever those who are outrunned (*defeated). ﴿٤١﴾
[70:42] Therefore, let them blunder and play, until they meet the day that is awaiting them.
فَذَرْهُمْfadharhumSo leave themيَخُوضُوا۟yakhūḍū[they] to converse vainly / indulge / blunderوَيَلْعَبُوا۟wayalʿabūand [they] amuse (themselves) /playحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilيُلَـٰقُوا۟yulāqūthey meetيَوْمَهُمُyawmahumutheir day,ٱلَّذِىalladhīwhichيُوعَدُونَyūʿadūnathey are promised. ﴿٤٢﴾
[70:43] That is the day they come out of the graves in a hurry, as if herded to the (sacrificial) altars.
يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَخْرُجُونَyakhrujūnathey will come outمِنَminafromٱلْأَجْدَاثِl-ajdāthithe gravesسِرَاعًاsirāʿanhurryingكَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumas if they wereإِلَىٰilātoنُصُبٍnuṣubin(sacrificial) altarيُوفِضُونَyūfiḍūna[they] hastening. ﴿٤٣﴾
[70:44] With their eyes subdued, shame will cover them. That is the day that is awaiting them.
خَـٰشِعَةًkhāshiʿatanSubduedأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْabṣāruhumtheir eyes,تَرْهَقُهُمْtarhaquhum[it] will cover themذِلَّةٌdhillatunhumiliation / shame.ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)ٱلْيَوْمُl-yawmuthe Dayٱلَّذِىalladhīwhichكَانُوا۟kānūthey wereيُوعَدُونَyūʿadūna[they] promised. ﴿٤٤﴾
