In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[83:1] Woe to the cheaters.
وَيْلٌwaylunWoeلِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَlil'muṭaffifīnato the ones who shortchange / cheaters. ﴿١﴾
[83:2] Who demand full measure when receiving from the people.
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoإِذَاidhāwhenٱكْتَالُوا۟ik'tālūthey took a measureعَلَىʿalāfromٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe people,يَسْتَوْفُونَyastawfūnathey seek to take in full. ﴿٢﴾
[83:3] But when giving them the measures or weights, they cheat.
وَإِذَاwa-idhāBut whenكَالُوهُمْkālūhumthey measured for themأَوaworوَّزَنُوهُمْwazanūhumthey weighed for themيُخْسِرُونَyukh'sirūnathey give less (than what is due). ﴿٣﴾
[83:4] Do they not know that they will be resurrected?
أَلَاalāDo notيَظُنُّyaẓunnu[he] thinkأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikathoseأَنَّهُمannahumthat theyمَّبْعُوثُونَmabʿūthūna(will be) those resurrected? ﴿٤﴾
[83:5] On a tremendous day?
لِيَوْمٍliyawminFor a dayعَظِيمٍʿaẓīmingreat / tremendous. ﴿٥﴾
[83:6] That is the day when all people will stand before the Lord of the universe.
يَوْمَyawma(The) dayيَقُومُyaqūmu[he] will standٱلنَّاسُl-nāsuthe peopleلِرَبِّlirabbibefore (the) Lord (of)ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīnathe worlds / universe. ﴿٦﴾
Numerically Structured Books
[83:7] Indeed, the book of the wicked is in Sijjeen.
كَلَّآkallāNay!إِنَّinnaIndeed,كِتَـٰبَkitāba(the) record / book (of)ٱلْفُجَّارِl-fujārithe wickedلَفِىlafī(is) surely inسِجِّينٍsijjīninimprisoned ones / Sijjeen. ﴿٧﴾
[83:8] Do you know what Sijjeen is?
وَمَآwamāAnd what*أَدْرَىٰكَadrākait can make you know (*do you know)مَاmāwhat (is)سِجِّينٌsijjīnunimprisoned ones / Sijjeen? ﴿٨﴾
[83:9] A numerically structured book.
كِتَـٰبٌkitābunA record / bookمَّرْقُومٌmarqūmuntallied / numbered / numerical. ﴿٩﴾
[83:10] Woe on that day to the rejectors.
وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the deniers / rejectors. ﴿١٠﴾
[83:11] They do not believe in the Day of Judgment.
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيُكَذِّبُونَyukadhibūna[they] deny / reject / disbelieveبِيَوْمِbiyawmiin (the) Day (of)ٱلدِّينِl-dīni[the] Judgment. ﴿١١﴾
[83:12] None disbelieves therein except the transgressor, the sinful.
وَمَاwamāAnd notيُكَذِّبُyukadhibuhe denies / rejects / disbelievesبِهِۦٓbihiin itإِلَّاillāexceptكُلُّkullueveryمُعْتَدٍmuʿ'tadintransgressorأَثِيمٍathīminsinful. ﴿١٢﴾
[83:13] When our revelations are recited to him, he says, "Tales from the past!"
إِذَاidhāWhenتُتْلَىٰtut'lāit is recitedعَلَيْهِʿalayhito himءَايَـٰتُنَاāyātunāour verses / revelations,قَالَqālahe says,أَسَـٰطِيرُasāṭīru"Tales (of)ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe past [ones]." ﴿١٣﴾
[83:14] Indeed, their hearts have become shielded by their sins.
كَلَّاkallāNay!بَلْbalBut,رَانَrānait rusted / dirtied / shieldedعَلَىٰʿalāoverقُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir heartsمَّاmā(for) whatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toيَكْسِبُونَyaksibūna[they] earn. ﴿١٤﴾
[83:15] Indeed, they will be isolated, on that day, from their Lord.
كَلَّآkallāNay!إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyعَنʿanfromرَّبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلَّمَحْجُوبُونَlamaḥjūbūnasurely [ones] shut out / barred / isolated. ﴿١٥﴾
[83:16] Then they will be thrown into Hell.
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّهُمْinnahumindeed, theyلَصَالُوا۟laṣālūsurely [they] are burned / castٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmi(in) the Hellfire. ﴿١٦﴾
[83:17] They will be told, "This is what you used to deny."
ثُمَّthummaThenيُقَالُyuqāluit will be said,هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)ٱلَّذِىalladhīthat whichكُنتُمkuntumyou [all] used toبِهِۦbihiof itتُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūnayou [all] deny." ﴿١٧﴾
[83:18] Indeed, the book of the righteous will be in 'Elleyyeen.
كَلَّآkallāNay!إِنَّinnaIndeed,كِتَـٰبَkitāba(the) record / book (of)ٱلْأَبْرَارِl-abrārithe righteousلَفِىlafī(will be) surely inعِلِّيِّينَʿilliyyīnaascended ones / Elleyyeen. ﴿١٨﴾
[83:19] Do you know what 'Elleyyeen is?
وَمَآwamāAnd what*أَدْرَىٰكَadrākait can make you know (*do you know)مَاmāwhat (is)عِلِّيُّونَʿilliyyūnaascended ones / Elleyyeen? ﴿١٩﴾
[83:20] A numerically structured book.
كِتَـٰبٌkitābunA record / bookمَّرْقُومٌmarqūmuntallied / numbered / numerical, ﴿٢٠﴾
[83:21] To be witnessed by those close to Me.
يَشْهَدُهُyashhaduhu[He] will witness itٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَl-muqarabūnathose brought near. ﴿٢١﴾
[83:22] The righteous have deserved bliss.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلْأَبْرَارَl-abrārathe righteousلَفِىlafī(will be) surely inنَعِيمٍnaʿīminbliss. ﴿٢٢﴾
[83:23] On luxurious furnishings they watch.
عَلَىʿalāOnٱلْأَرَآئِكِl-arāikithe luxurious furnishingsيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūna[they] look / observe / watch. ﴿٢٣﴾
[83:24] You recognize in their faces the joy of bliss.
تَعْرِفُtaʿrifuYou will recognizeفِىfīinوُجُوهِهِمْwujūhihimtheir facesنَضْرَةَnaḍrata(the) radiance (of)ٱلنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi[the] bliss. ﴿٢٤﴾
[83:25] Their drinks will be spiced with nectar.
يُسْقَوْنَyus'qawnaThey will be given to drinkمِنminofرَّحِيقٍraḥīqina pure wine / nectarمَّخْتُومٍmakhtūminspiced. ﴿٢٥﴾
[83:26] Its spice is like musk. This is what the competitors should compete for.
خِتَـٰمُهُۥkhitāmuhuIts spiceمِسْكٌmis'kun(like) musk.وَفِىwafīAnd forذَٰلِكَdhālikathatفَلْيَتَنَافَسِfalyatanāfasithen let him aspire / competeٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَl-mutanāfisūnathe aspirers / competitors. ﴿٢٦﴾
[83:27] Mixed into it will be special flavors.
وَمِزَاجُهُۥwamizājuhuAnd it mixed itمِنminfromتَسْنِيمٍtasnīminspecial water / flavors. ﴿٢٧﴾
[83:28] From a spring that is reserved for those close to Me.
عَيْنًاʿaynanA spring,يَشْرَبُyashrabuhe will drinkبِهَاbihāfrom it,ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَl-muqarabūnathose brought near. ﴿٢٨﴾
[83:29] The wicked used to laugh at those who believed.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأَجْرَمُوا۟ajramūthey committed crimesكَانُوا۟kānū[they] used toمِنَminaatٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanū[they] believedيَضْحَكُونَyaḍḥakūna[they] laughed. ﴿٢٩﴾
[83:30] When they passed by them, they used to poke fun.
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenمَرُّوا۟marrūthey passed [by]بِهِمْbihimby them,يَتَغَامَزُونَyataghāmazūnathey wink at one another (*poked fun). ﴿٣٠﴾
[83:31] When they got together with their people, they used to joke.
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟inqalabūthey returnedإِلَىٰٓilātoأَهْلِهِمُahlihimutheir people,ٱنقَلَبُوا۟inqalabūthey returnedفَكِهِينَfakihīna[ones] jesting. ﴿٣١﴾
[83:32] Whenever they saw them, they said, "These people are far astray!
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenرَأَوْهُمْra-awhumthey saw them,قَالُوٓا۟qālūthey said,إِنَّinna"Indeed,هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāitheseلَضَآلُّونَlaḍāllūnasurely are ones gone astray. ﴿٣٢﴾
[83:33] "They have no such thing as (invisible) guards."
وَمَآwamā"And notأُرْسِلُوا۟ur'silūthey were sentعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimover themحَـٰفِظِينَḥāfiẓīna(as) guardians." ﴿٣٣﴾
[83:34] Today, those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers.
فَٱلْيَوْمَfal-yawmaSo todayٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُوا۟āmanū[they] believedمِنَminaatٱلْكُفَّارِl-kufārithe disbelieversيَضْحَكُونَyaḍḥakūnathey will laugh. ﴿٣٤﴾
[83:35] On luxurious furnishings they watch.
عَلَىʿalāOnٱلْأَرَآئِكِl-arāiki[the] luxurious furnishingsيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūna[they] look / observe / watch. ﴿٣٥﴾
[83:36] Most assuredly, the disbelievers are requited for what they did.
هَلْhalHave (not)ثُوِّبَthuwwiba[he] was requitedٱلْكُفَّارُl-kufāruthe disbelieversمَاmā(for) whatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toيَفْعَلُونَyafʿalūna[they] do? ﴿٣٦﴾
