Sura 79: Al-Naaze‘aat (The Snatchers) - Quran Inspector

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.

[79:1] The (angels who) snatch (the souls of the disbelievers) forcibly.

وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَـٰتِwal-nāziʿātiBy those that snatchغَرْقًاgharqansuddenly / violently / forcibly. ﴿١﴾

[79:2] And those who gently take (the souls of the believers) joyfully.

وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَـٰتِwal-nāshiṭātiAnd those that draw outنَشْطًاnashṭangently. ﴿٢﴾

[79:3] And those floating everywhere.

وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِwal-sābiḥātiAnd those that glideسَبْحًاsabḥanfloating. ﴿٣﴾

[79:4] Eagerly racing with one another -

فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَـٰتِfal-sābiqātiAnd those that race each otherسَبْقًاsabqan(in) a race. ﴿٤﴾

[79:5] to carry out various commands.

فَٱلْمُدَبِّرَٰتِfal-mudabirātiAnd those who administer the affairs in an excellent mannerأَمْرًاamran(the) command(s). ﴿٥﴾

[79:6] The day the quake quakes.

يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayتَرْجُفُtarjufuit quakesٱلرَّاجِفَةُl-rājifatuthe quaking. ﴿٦﴾

[79:7] Followed by the second blow.

تَتْبَعُهَاtatbaʿuhāIt follows itٱلرَّادِفَةُl-rādifatuthe subsequent. ﴿٧﴾

[79:8] Certain minds will be terrified.

قُلُوبٌqulūbunHeartsيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat day,وَاجِفَةٌwājifatuntrembling. ﴿٨﴾

[79:9] Their eyes will be subdued.

أَبْصَـٰرُهَاabṣāruhāTheir eyesخَـٰشِعَةٌkhāshiʿatunsubdued. ﴿٩﴾

[79:10] They will say, "We have been recreated from the grave!

يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnaThey say,أَءِنَّاa-innā"Will weلَمَرْدُودُونَlamardūdūnasurely be [ones who] return / restoredفِىfīinٱلْحَافِرَةِl-ḥāfiratithe original form / grave? ﴿١٠﴾

[79:11] "How did this happen after we had turned into rotten bones?"

أَءِذَاa-idhā"What! Whenكُنَّاkunnāwe wereعِظَـٰمًاʿiẓāmanbonesنَّخِرَةًnakhiratandecayed / rotten?" ﴿١١﴾

[79:12] They had said, "This is an impossible recurrence."

قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,تِلْكَtil'ka"Thisإِذًاidhanthen (would be)كَرَّةٌkarratuna return / recurrenceخَاسِرَةٌkhāsiratunviolating / losing (*impossible)." ﴿١٢﴾

[79:13] All it takes is one nudge.

فَإِنَّمَاfa-innamāThen onlyهِىَhiyaitزَجْرَةٌzajratun(will be) a shout / cry / nudgeوَٰحِدَةٌwāḥidatunsingle. ﴿١٣﴾

[79:14] Whereupon they get up.

فَإِذَاfa-idhāAnd behold!هُمhumTheyبِٱلسَّاهِرَةِbil-sāhirati(will be) [of the] awakened. ﴿١٤﴾

[79:15] Have you known about the history of Moses?

هَلْhalHasأَتَىٰكَatāka[it] came to youحَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) history (of)مُوسَىٰٓmūsāMoses? ﴿١٥﴾

[79:16] His Lord called him at the holy valley of Tuwaa.

إِذْidhWhenنَادَىٰهُnādāhu[He] called himرَبُّهُۥrabbuhuhis Lordبِٱلْوَادِbil-wādiin the valley (of)ٱلْمُقَدَّسِl-muqadasithe sacred / holy placeطُوًىṭuwanTuwa. ﴿١٦﴾

[79:17] "Go to Pharaoh; he has transgressed."

ٱذْهَبْidh'hab"Goإِلَىٰilātoفِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaPharaoh.إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heطَغَىٰṭaghā[he] transgressed." ﴿١٧﴾

[79:18] Tell him, "Would you not reform?

فَقُلْfaqulAnd say,هَلhal"Wouldلَّكَlakafor youإِلَىٰٓilātoأَنanthatتَزَكَّىٰtazakkāyou purify yourself (reform)? ﴿١٨﴾

[79:19] "Let me guide you to your Lord, that you may turn reverent."

وَأَهْدِيَكَwa-ahdiyaka"And I will guide youإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordفَتَخْشَىٰfatakhshāthen you will reverence." ﴿١٩﴾

[79:20] He then showed him the great miracle.

فَأَرَىٰهُfa-arāhuThen he showed himٱلْـَٔايَةَl-āyatathe sign / miracleٱلْكُبْرَىٰl-kub'rāthe great. ﴿٢٠﴾

[79:21] But he disbelieved and rebelled.

فَكَذَّبَfakadhabaBut he denied / disbelievedوَعَصَىٰwaʿaṣāand he disobeyed / rebelled. ﴿٢١﴾

[79:22] Then he turned away in a hurry.

ثُمَّthummaThenأَدْبَرَadbarahe turned backيَسْعَىٰyasʿāhe striving / hurrying. ﴿٢٢﴾

[79:23] He summoned and proclaimed.

فَحَشَرَfaḥasharaAnd he summonedفَنَادَىٰfanādāand he called out. ﴿٢٣﴾

[79:24] He said, "I am your Lord; most high."

فَقَالَfaqālaThen he said,أَنَا۠anā"I amرَبُّكُمُrabbukumuyour lord,ٱلْأَعْلَىٰl-aʿlāthe most high." ﴿٢٤﴾

[79:25] Consequently, GOD committed him to the retribution in the Hereafter, as well as in the first life.

فَأَخَذَهُfa-akhadhahuSo [He] seized / committed himٱللَّهُl-lahuGodنَكَالَnakāla(with) an exemplary punishment / retributionٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhirati(for) the last / Hereafterوَٱلْأُولَىٰٓwal-ūlāand the first. ﴿٢٥﴾

[79:26] This is a lesson for the reverent.

إِنَّinnaIndeed,فِىfīinذَٰلِكَdhālikathat (is)لَعِبْرَةًlaʿib'ratansurely a lessonلِّمَنlimanfor whoeverيَخْشَىٰٓyakhshāhe is reverent. ﴿٢٦﴾

[79:27] Are you more difficult to create than the heaven? He constructed it.

ءَأَنتُمْa-antumAre you [all]أَشَدُّashaddumore difficultخَلْقًاkhalqancreationأَمِamior isٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heaven?بَنَىٰهَاbanāhāHe constructed it. ﴿٢٧﴾

[79:28] He raised its masses, and perfected it.

رَفَعَrafaʿaHe raisedسَمْكَهَاsamkahāits ceiling (masses)فَسَوَّىٰهَاfasawwāhāand He perfected it. ﴿٢٨﴾

[79:29] He made its night dark, and brightened its morn.

وَأَغْطَشَwa-aghṭashaAnd He darkenedلَيْلَهَاlaylahāits nightوَأَخْرَجَwa-akhrajaand He brought outضُحَىٰهَاḍuḥāhāits brightness / bright part of the day. ﴿٢٩﴾

[79:30] He made the earth egg-shaped.*

وَٱلْأَرْضَwal-arḍaAnd the earthبَعْدَbaʿdaafterذَٰلِكَdhālikathatدَحَىٰهَآdaḥāhāHe spread it / made it egg-shaped. ﴿٣٠﴾

*79:30 The Arabic word "dahhaahaa" is derived from "Dahhyah" which means "egg."

[79:31] From it, He produced its own water and pasture.

أَخْرَجَakhrajaHe producedمِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it,مَآءَهَاmāahāits waterوَمَرْعَىٰهَاwamarʿāhāand its pasture. ﴿٣١﴾

[79:32] He established the mountains.

وَٱلْجِبَالَwal-jibālaAnd the mountains,أَرْسَىٰهَاarsāhāHe anchored / established it. ﴿٣٢﴾

[79:33] All this to provide life support for you and your animals.

مَتَـٰعًاmatāʿan(As) a provisionلَّكُمْlakumfor you [all]وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْwali-anʿāmikumand for your livestock. ﴿٣٣﴾

[79:34] Then, when the great blow comes.

فَإِذَاfa-idhāBut whenجَآءَتِjāati[it] (will) comeٱلطَّآمَّةُl-ṭāmatuthe overwhelming event / calamityٱلْكُبْرَىٰl-kub'rāthe great, ﴿٣٤﴾

[79:35] That is the day when the human will remember everything he did.

يَوْمَyawma(The) Dayيَتَذَكَّرُyatadhakkaru[he] will rememberٱلْإِنسَـٰنُl-insānuthe human beingمَاmāwhatسَعَىٰsaʿāhe strove (for). ﴿٣٥﴾

[79:36] Hell will be brought into existence.

وَبُرِّزَتِwaburrizatiAnd [it] (will be) made manifestٱلْجَحِيمُl-jaḥīmuthe Hellfireلِمَنlimanto (him) whoيَرَىٰyarāhe sees. ﴿٣٦﴾

[79:37] As for the one who transgressed.

فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as forمَنman(him) whoطَغَىٰṭaghāhe transgressed. ﴿٣٧﴾

[79:38] Who was preoccupied with this life.

وَءَاثَرَwaātharaAnd he preferredٱلْحَيَوٰةَl-ḥayatathe life (of)ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe world. ﴿٣٨﴾

[79:39] Hell will be the abode.

فَإِنَّfa-innaThen indeed,ٱلْجَحِيمَl-jaḥīmathe Hellfire,هِىَhiyait (is)ٱلْمَأْوَىٰl-mawāthe abode. ﴿٣٩﴾

[79:40] As for the one who reverenced the majesty of his Lord, and enjoined the self from sinful lusts.

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنْman(him) whoخَافَkhāfahe feared / reverencedمَقَامَmaqāmastanding / majestyرَبِّهِۦrabbihi(before) his Lord,وَنَهَىwanahāand he restrained / refrainedٱلنَّفْسَl-nafsa(his) [the] soul / selfعَنِʿanifromٱلْهَوَىٰl-hawāthe vain desire / sinful lust. ﴿٤٠﴾

[79:41] Paradise will be the abode.

فَإِنَّfa-innaThen indeed,ٱلْجَنَّةَl-janatathe Paradiseهِىَhiyait (is)ٱلْمَأْوَىٰl-mawāthe abode. ﴿٤١﴾

[79:42] They ask you about the Hour, and when it will take place!

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَyasalūnakaThey ask youعَنِʿaniaboutٱلسَّاعَةِl-sāʿatithe Hour,أَيَّانَayyānawhen (is)مُرْسَىٰهَاmur'sāhāits arrival? ﴿٤٢﴾

[79:43] It is not you (Muhammad) who is destined to announce its time.

فِيمَfīmaConcerning not (are)أَنتَantayouمِنminfromذِكْرَىٰهَآdhik'rāhāmentioning it? ﴿٤٣﴾

[79:44] Your Lord decides its fate.

إِلَىٰilāToرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord (is)مُنتَهَىٰهَآmuntahāhāits final destination / fate. ﴿٤٤﴾

[79:45] Your mission is to warn those who expect it.

إِنَّمَآinnamāOnlyأَنتَantayou (are)مُنذِرُmundhirua warnerمَنman(for him) whoيَخْشَىٰهَاyakhshāhāhe fears it. ﴿٤٥﴾

[79:46] The day they see it, they will feel as if they lasted one evening or half a day.

كَأَنَّهُمْka-annahumAs though they,يَوْمَyawma(the) dayيَرَوْنَهَاyarawnahāthey see it,لَمْlamnotيَلْبَثُوٓا۟yalbathūthey remainإِلَّاillāexceptعَشِيَّةًʿashiyyatanan eveningأَوْaworضُحَىٰهَاḍuḥāhāits brightness / early part of the afternoon. ﴿٤٦﴾
