Sura 77: Al-Mursalaat (Dispatched) - Quran Inspector

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.

[77:1] (Angels) dispatched in succession.

وَٱلْمُرْسَلَـٰتِwal-mur'salātiBy the ones who are sent forth / dispatched,عُرْفًاʿur'fan(in) waves (succession). ﴿١﴾

[77:2] To drive the wind.

فَٱلْعَـٰصِفَـٰتِfal-ʿāṣifātiAnd the winds that blowعَصْفًاʿaṣfanraging / blowing. ﴿٢﴾

[77:3] Stir up clouds.

وَٱلنَّـٰشِرَٰتِwal-nāshirātiAnd the ones that scatterنَشْرًاnashranfar and wide / dispersing / spreading. ﴿٣﴾

[77:4] Distribute the provisions.

فَٱلْفَـٰرِقَـٰتِfal-fāriqātiAnd the ones that distinguish / separate / divideفَرْقًاfarqandistinguishing. ﴿٤﴾

[77:5] Deliver messages.

فَٱلْمُلْقِيَـٰتِfal-mul'qiyātiAnd the ones who deliverذِكْرًاdhik'ran(the) reminder / message. ﴿٥﴾

[77:6] Good news, as well as warnings.

عُذْرًاʿudh'ranAn excuse / plea / pardonأَوْaworنُذْرًاnudh'ranwarning. ﴿٦﴾

[77:7] What is promised will come to pass.

إِنَّمَاinnamāIndeed, whatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou [all] are promisedلَوَٰقِعٌlawāqiʿun(will) surely occur / inevitable. ﴿٧﴾

[77:8] Thus, when the stars are put out.

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo when [in the future]ٱلنُّجُومُl-nujūmuthe starsطُمِسَتْṭumisat[it] were obliterated / made to lose brightness. ﴿٨﴾

[77:9] The sky is opened up.

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when [in the future]ٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenفُرِجَتْfurijatit was opened up. ﴿٩﴾

[77:10] The mountains are blown up.

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلْجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsنُسِفَتْnusifatit were broken up / blown away / uprooted / blown up. ﴿١٠﴾

[77:11] The messengers are summoned.

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلرُّسُلُl-rusuluthe messengersأُقِّتَتْuqqitat[it] were summoned to an appointed time. ﴿١١﴾

[77:12] That is the appointed day.

لِأَىِّli-ayyiThat is / nowيَوْمٍyawminDayأُجِّلَتْujjilatit was fixed / appointed. ﴿١٢﴾

[77:13] The Day of Decision.

لِيَوْمِliyawmiFor (the) Day (of)ٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣli[the] Decision. ﴿١٣﴾

[77:14] What a Day of Decision!

وَمَآwamāAnd what*أَدْرَىٰكَadrākait will make you know (*do you know)مَاmāwhat (is)يَوْمُyawmu(the) Day (of)ٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣlithe Decision? ﴿١٤﴾

[77:15] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿١٥﴾

[77:16] Did we not annihilate the earlier generations?

أَلَمْalamDid notنُهْلِكِnuh'likiwe annihilateٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former [ones] (people) / earlier generations? ﴿١٦﴾

[77:17] Then we made others follow them?

ثُمَّthummaThenنُتْبِعُهُمُnut'biʿuhumuwe follow them upٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīna(with) the later ones. ﴿١٧﴾

[77:18] This is what we do to the criminals.

كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusنَفْعَلُnafʿaluwe dealبِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَbil-muj'rimīnawith the criminals. ﴿١٨﴾

[77:19] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿١٩﴾

[77:20] Did we not create you from a lowly liquid?*

أَلَمْalamDid notنَخْلُقكُّمnakhluqkkumwe create you [all]مِّنminfromمَّآءٍmāina water / liquidمَّهِينٍmahīnindespicable / lowly? ﴿٢٠﴾

*77:20-23 According to Langman's Medical Embryology, by T. W. Sadler (Fifth Edition, Page 88): "In general the length of pregnancy for a full term fetus is 266 days or 38 weeks after fertilization." Both 266 and 38 are multiples of 19 (Appendix 1).

[77:21] Then we placed it in a well-protected repository.

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُfajaʿalnāhuThen we placed itفِىfīinقَرَارٍqarārina repositoryمَّكِينٍmakīninestablished / firm place / well-protected. ﴿٢١﴾

[77:22] For a specific period.

إِلَىٰilāForقَدَرٍqadarina measure / quantityمَّعْلُومٍmaʿlūminknown / specified. ﴿٢٢﴾

[77:23] We measured it precisely.* We are the best designers.

فَقَدَرْنَاfaqadarnāSo we measured / proportioned / designed.فَنِعْمَfaniʿ'maAnd excellent / bestٱلْقَـٰدِرُونَl-qādirūna[the ones] who measure / design! ﴿٢٣﴾

[77:24] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٢٤﴾

[77:25] Did we not make the earth an abode?

أَلَمْalamHave notنَجْعَلِnajʿaliwe madeٱلْأَرْضَl-arḍathe earthكِفَاتًاkifātana receptacle (abode), ﴿٢٥﴾

[77:26] For the living and the dead?

أَحْيَآءًaḥyāan(For the) livingوَأَمْوَٰتًاwa-amwātanand (the) dead, ﴿٢٦﴾

[77:27] We placed on it high mountains, and provided you with fresh water to drink.

وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeفِيهَاfīhāthereinرَوَٰسِىَrawāsiyastabilizers (mountains)شَـٰمِخَـٰتٍshāmikhātin[ones] tall / high, وَأَسْقَيْنَـٰكُمwa-asqaynākumand we gave you [all] to drinkمَّآءًmāanwaterفُرَاتًاfurātansweet and thirst quenching / fresh? ﴿٢٧﴾

[77:28] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٢٨﴾

[77:29] Go to what you used to disbelieve in.

ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟inṭaliqū"Proceed / Move on / Go to [you all]إِلَىٰilātoمَاmāwhatكُنتُمkuntumyou [all] used toبِهِۦbihiin itتُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūnayou [all] deny / disbelieve. ﴿٢٩﴾

[77:30] Go to a shade of three different densities.

ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟inṭaliqūProceed / Move on / Go to [you all]إِلَىٰilātoظِلٍّẓillina shadow / shadeذِىdhīhavingثَلَـٰثِthalāthithreeشُعَبٍshuʿabinspace between two branches / portions / densities. ﴿٣٠﴾

[77:31] Yet, it provides neither coolness, nor protection from the heat.

لَّاlāNoظَلِيلٍẓalīlinshadingوَلَاwalāand notيُغْنِىyugh'nīit availsمِنَminaagainstٱللَّهَبِl-lahabithe flame / heat. ﴿٣١﴾

[77:32] It throws sparks as big as mansions.

إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, itتَرْمِىtarmī[it] throwsبِشَرَرٍbishararinof sparksكَٱلْقَصْرِkal-qaṣrilike the (size of) mansions, ﴿٣٢﴾

[77:33] As yellow as the color of camels.

كَأَنَّهُۥka-annahuAs if it wereجِمَـٰلَتٌjimālatuncamelsصُفْرٌṣuf'runyellow. ﴿٣٣﴾

[77:34] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٣٤﴾

[77:35] That is the day they do not speak.

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)يَوْمُyawmua Dayلَاlānotيَنطِقُونَyanṭiqūnathey will speak. ﴿٣٥﴾

[77:36] Nor are they given permission to apologize.

وَلَاwalāAnd notيُؤْذَنُyu'dhanuit will be permittedلَهُمْlahumfor themفَيَعْتَذِرُونَfayaʿtadhirūnaso that they make excuses / apologize. ﴿٣٦﴾

[77:37] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٣٧﴾

[77:38] This is the Day of Decision. We have summoned you and the previous generations.

هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)يَوْمُyawmu(the) Day (of)ٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣli[the] Decision;جَمَعْنَـٰكُمْjamaʿnākumWe summoned you [all]وَٱلْأَوَّلِينَwal-awalīnaand the former [ones] (people) / previous generations. ﴿٣٨﴾

[77:39] If you have any schemes, go ahead and scheme.

فَإِنfa-inSo ifكَانَkānait wasلَكُمْlakumfor you [all]كَيْدٌkayduna scheme,فَكِيدُونِfakīdūnithen scheme against Me [you all]. ﴿٣٩﴾

[77:40] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٤٠﴾

[77:41] The righteous will enjoy shade and springs.

إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلْمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteous [ones]فِىfī(will be) inظِلَـٰلٍẓilālinshadesوَعُيُونٍwaʿuyūninand springs. ﴿٤١﴾

[77:42] And fruits that they desire.

وَفَوَٰكِهَwafawākihaAnd fruitsمِمَّاmimmāfrom whatيَشْتَهُونَyashtahūnathey desire. ﴿٤٢﴾

[77:43] Eat and drink happily in return for your works.

كُلُوا۟kulū"Eat [you all]وَٱشْرَبُوا۟wa-ish'rabūand drink [you all]هَنِيٓـًٔۢاhanīan(in) satisfactionبِمَاbimāfor whatكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] used toتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna[you all] do." ﴿٤٣﴾

[77:44] We thus reward the virtuous.

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikathusنَجْزِىnajzīwe rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe virtuous [ones]. ﴿٤٤﴾

[77:45] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٤٥﴾

[77:46] Eat and enjoy temporarily; you are guilty.

كُلُوا۟kulūEat [you all]وَتَمَتَّعُوا۟watamattaʿūand enjoy [you all] قَلِيلًاqalīlana little;إِنَّكُمinnakumIndeed, you [all] (are)مُّجْرِمُونَmuj'rimūnaguilty ones." ﴿٤٦﴾

[77:47] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٤٧﴾

[77:48] When they are told, "Bow down," they do not bow down.

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenقِيلَqīlait was saidلَهُمُlahumuto them,ٱرْكَعُوا۟ir'kaʿū"Bow [you all],"لَاlānotيَرْكَعُونَyarkaʿūnathey bow. ﴿٤٨﴾

[77:49] Woe on that day to the rejectors.

وَيْلٌwaylunWoeيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the rejectors. ﴿٤٩﴾

[77:50] Which Hadith, other than this, do they uphold?

فَبِأَىِّfabi-ayyiSo whichحَدِيثٍۭḥadīthinHadithبَعْدَهُۥbaʿdahuafter itيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe? ﴿٥٠﴾
