Sura 53: Al-Najm (The Stars) النّجم

Sura 53 - Al-Najm
In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[53:1] As the stars fell away.*
وَٱلنَّجْمِwal-najmiBy the starإِذَاidhāwhenهَوَىٰhawāit fell down / fell away (*to fall steep as a bird to its prey). ﴿١﴾
*53:1-18 Muhammad was summoned to the highest universe to receive this Quran into his heart. The stars fell away as he traveled through them at millions of times the speed of light. Subsequently, the Quran was gradually released to his memory. App. 28.
[53:2] Your friend (Muhammad) was not astray, nor was he deceived.
مَاNotضَلَّḍalla[he] strayedصَاحِبُكُمْṣāḥibukumyour companionوَمَاwamāand notغَوَىٰghawāhe erred. ﴿٢﴾
[53:3] Nor was he speaking out of a personal desire.
وَمَاwamāAnd notيَنطِقُyanṭiquhe speaksعَنِʿanifromٱلْهَوَىٰٓl-hawāthe opinion / personal desire. ﴿٣﴾
[53:4] It was divine inspiration.
إِنْinNotهُوَhuwait (is)إِلَّاillāexceptوَحْىٌwaḥyuna revelation / inspiration*يُوحَىٰyūḥāHe reveals / inspires (*divine inspiration). ﴿٤﴾
[53:5] Dictated by the Most Powerful.
عَلَّمَهُۥʿallamahu[He] taught himشَدِيدُshadīduMightyٱلْقُوَىٰl-quwāthe Powerful / Most Powerful. ﴿٥﴾
[53:6] Possessor of all authority. From His highest height.
ذُوdhūPossessor ofمِرَّةٍmirratinContinuity / Authority.فَٱسْتَوَىٰfa-is'tawāAnd He rose. ﴿٦﴾
[53:7] At the highest horizon.
وَهُوَwahuwaWhile He (was)بِٱلْأُفُقِbil-ufuqiin the horizonٱلْأَعْلَىٰl-aʿlāthe highest. ﴿٧﴾
[53:8] He drew nearer by moving down.
ثُمَّthummaThenدَنَاdanāHe drew near فَتَدَلَّىٰfatadallāand He came down. ﴿٨﴾
[53:9] Until He became as close as possible.
فَكَانَfakānaAnd He wasقَابَqāba(at) a short distance (of)قَوْسَيْنِqawsaynitwo bow-lengthsأَوْaworأَدْنَىٰadnālower / nearer. ﴿٩﴾
[53:10] He then revealed to His servant what was to be revealed.
فَأَوْحَىٰٓfa-awḥāThen He revealedإِلَىٰilātoعَبْدِهِۦʿabdihiHis servantمَآwhatأَوْحَىٰawḥāHe revealed. ﴿١٠﴾
[53:11] The mind never made up what it saw.
مَاNotكَذَبَkadhaba[it] liedٱلْفُؤَادُl-fuāduthe heart / mindمَاwhatرَأَىٰٓraāit saw. ﴿١١﴾
[53:12] Are you doubting what he saw?
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥafatumārūnahuThen will you [all] doubt himعَلَىٰʿalāoverمَاwhatيَرَىٰyarāhe sees? ﴿١٢﴾
[53:13] He saw him in another descent.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyرَءَاهُraāhuHe saw himنَزْلَةًnazlatan(in) descentأُخْرَىٰukh'rāanother. ﴿١٣﴾
[53:14] At the ultimate point.
عِندَʿindaAtسِدْرَةِsid'rati(the) point of understanding / comprehension (of)ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰl-muntahāthe utmost boundary. ﴿١٤﴾
[53:15] Where the eternal Paradise is located.
عِندَهَاʿindahāAt it (located)جَنَّةُjannatu(the) Paradise (of)ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓl-mawāthe abode. ﴿١٥﴾
[53:16] The whole place was overwhelmed.
إِذْidhWhenيَغْشَىyaghshā[it] overwhelmsٱلسِّدْرَةَl-sid'ratathe point beyond comprehensionمَاwhatيَغْشَىٰyaghshāit covers / conceals / overwhelms. ﴿١٦﴾
[53:17] The eyes did not waver, nor go blind.
مَاNotزَاغَzāgha[it] turned aside / waveredٱلْبَصَرُl-baṣaruthe eyesوَمَاwamāand notطَغَىٰṭaghāit transgressed / exceeded the limit. ﴿١٧﴾
[53:18] He saw great signs of his Lord.
لَقَدْlaqadCertainlyرَأَىٰraāhe sawمِنْminofءَايَـٰتِāyāti(the) signsرَبِّهِrabbihi(of) his Lordٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓl-kub'rāthe great. ﴿١٨﴾
The Flimsy Idols
[53:19] Compare this with the female idols Allaat and Al-'Uzzah.
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُafara-aytumuAnd have you [all] consideredٱللَّـٰتَl-lātaAllaatوَٱلْعُزَّىٰwal-ʿuzāand Al-'Uzzah. ﴿١٩﴾
[53:20] And Manaat, the third one.
وَمَنَوٰةَwamanataAnd Manaat,ٱلثَّالِثَةَl-thālithatathe third,ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓl-ukh'rāthe other (one)? ﴿٢٠﴾
[53:21] Do you have sons, while He has these as daughters?
أَلَكُمُalakumuIs for you [all]ٱلذَّكَرُl-dhakaruthe maleوَلَهُwalahuand for Himٱلْأُنثَىٰl-unthāthe female? ﴿٢١﴾
[53:22] What a disgraceful distribution!
تِلْكَtil'kaThis,إِذًاidhanthen (would be)قِسْمَةٌqis'matuna division / distributionضِيزَىٰٓḍīzāunfair / disgraceful. ﴿٢٢﴾
[53:23] These are but names that you made up, you and your forefathers. GOD never authorized such a blasphemy. They follow conjecture, and personal desire, when the true guidance has come to them herein from their Lord.
إِنْinNotهِىَhiyathey (are)إِلَّآillāexceptأَسْمَآءٌasmāonnamesسَمَّيْتُمُوهَآsammaytumūhāyou [all] have designated / named it (*made up)أَنتُمْantumyou [all]وَءَابَآؤُكُمwaābāukumand your forefathers,مَّآnotأَنزَلَanzala[He] sent downٱللَّهُl-lahuGodبِهَاbihāin itمِنminanyسُلْطَـٰنٍsul'ṭāninauthority.إِنinNotيَتَّبِعُونَyattabiʿūnathey followإِلَّاillāexceptٱلظَّنَّl-ẓana[the] assumption / conjectureوَمَاwamāand whatتَهْوَىtahwā[it] desiresٱلْأَنفُسُl-anfusu[the] self / personal.وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd certainlyجَآءَهُمjāahumit came to themمِّنminfromرَّبِّهِمُrabbihimutheir Lordٱلْهُدَىٰٓl-hudāthe guidance. ﴿٢٣﴾
[53:24] What is it that the human being desires?
أَمْamOr isلِلْإِنسَـٰنِlil'insānifor the man / human beingمَاwhatتَمَنَّىٰtamannāhe desired? ﴿٢٤﴾
[53:25] To GOD belongs both the Hereafter, and this world.
فَلِلَّهِfalillahiBut for God (is)ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُl-ākhiratuthe last / Hereafterوَٱلْأُولَىٰwal-ūlāand the first (life). ﴿٢٥﴾
[53:26] Not even the angels in heaven possess authority to intercede. The only ones permitted by GOD are those who act in accordance with His will and His approval.
وَكَمwakamAnd how manyمِّنminofمَّلَكٍmalakin(the) angel(s)فِىinٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensلَاnotتُغْنِىtugh'nī[it] will avail / helpشَفَـٰعَتُهُمْshafāʿatuhumtheir intercessionشَيْـًٔاshayananythingإِلَّاillāexceptمِنۢminfromبَعْدِbaʿdiafterأَنanthatيَأْذَنَyadhana[He] gives permissionٱللَّهُl-lahuGodلِمَنlimanfor whomيَشَآءُyashāuHe willsوَيَرْضَىٰٓwayarḍāand He approves. ﴿٢٦﴾
[53:27] Those who disbelieve in the Hereafter have given the angels feminine names.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoلَاnotيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believeبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِbil-ākhiratiin the Hereafter,لَيُسَمُّونَlayusammūnasurely they nameٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَl-malāikatathe angelsتَسْمِيَةَtasmiyatagiving names (of)ٱلْأُنثَىٰl-unthāthe females. ﴿٢٧﴾
[53:28] They had no knowledge about this; they only conjectured. Conjecture is no substitute for the truth.
وَمَاwamāAnd notلَهُمlahumfor themبِهِۦbihiin itمِنْminanyعِلْمٍʿil'minknowledge.إِنinNotيَتَّبِعُونَyattabiʿūnathey followإِلَّاillābutٱلظَّنَّl-ẓana[the] assumption / conjecture.وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,ٱلظَّنَّl-ẓanathe assumption / conjectureلَاnotيُغْنِىyugh'nīit will avail / helpمِنَminaagainstٱلْحَقِّl-ḥaqithe truthشَيْـًٔاshayananything. ﴿٢٨﴾
Choose Your Friends Carefully
[53:29] You shall disregard those who turn away from our message, and become preoccupied with this worldly life.
فَأَعْرِضْfa-aʿriḍSo turn away / disregardعَنʿanfromمَّنman(him) whoتَوَلَّىٰtawallāhe turned awayعَنʿanfromذِكْرِنَاdhik'rināour reminderوَلَمْwalamand notيُرِدْyuridhe desiresإِلَّاillāexceptٱلْحَيَوٰةَl-ḥayatathe life (of)ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe world. ﴿٢٩﴾
[53:30] This is the extent of their knowledge. Your Lord is fully aware of those who strayed away from His path, and He is fully aware of those who are guided.
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat (is)مَبْلَغُهُمmablaghuhumtheir reach / extentمِّنَminaofٱلْعِلْمِl-ʿil'mi[the] knowledge.إِنَّinnaIndeed,رَبَّكَrabbakayour LordهُوَhuwaHeأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknows bestبِمَنbimanin whoضَلَّḍallahe strayedعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِهِۦsabīlihiHis path,وَهُوَwahuwaand Heأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknows bestبِمَنِbimaniin whoٱهْتَدَىٰih'tadā[he] received guidance. ﴿٣٠﴾
[53:31] To GOD belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. He will requite those who commit evil for their works, and will reward the righteous for their righteousness.
وَلِلَّهِwalillahiAnd for God (is)مَاwhateverفِى(is) inٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَمَاwamāand whateverفِى(is) inٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthلِيَجْزِىَliyajziyathat He may requiteٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟asāūthey did evilبِمَاbimāwith whatعَمِلُوا۟ʿamilūthey didوَيَجْزِىَwayajziyaand He rewardٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoأَحْسَنُوا۟aḥsanūthey did goodبِٱلْحُسْنَىbil-ḥus'nāwith [the] righteousness. ﴿٣١﴾
[53:32] They avoid gross sins and transgressions, except for minor offenses. Your Lord's forgiveness is immense. He has been fully aware of you since He initiated you from the earth, and while you were embryos in your mothers' bellies. Therefore, do not exalt yourselves; He is fully aware of the righteous.
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيَجْتَنِبُونَyajtanibūnathey avoidكَبَـٰٓئِرَkabāira[it] great / grossٱلْإِثْمِl-ith'mithe sin(s)وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَwal-fawāḥishaand the immoralities / vices / transgressionsإِلَّاillāexceptٱللَّمَمَl-lamamathe minor offenses;إِنَّinnaindeed,رَبَّكَrabbakayour Lord (is)وَٰسِعُwāsiʿuvast / immenseٱلْمَغْفِرَةِl-maghfirati(in) [the] forgiveness.هُوَhuwaHe (is)أَعْلَمُaʿlamufully aware / knows bestبِكُمْbikumof you [all]إِذْidhwhenأَنشَأَكُمansha-akumHe produced / initiated you [all]مِّنَminafromٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthوَإِذْwa-idhand whenأَنتُمْantumyou [all] (were)أَجِنَّةٌajinnatunembryosفِىinبُطُونِbuṭūni(the) wombs / bellies (of)أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْummahātikumyour mothers.فَلَاfalāSo (do) notتُزَكُّوٓا۟tuzakkūyou [all] ascribe purity / exaltأَنفُسَكُمْanfusakumyourselves.هُوَhuwaHeأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknows bestبِمَنِbimaniin whoeverٱتَّقَىٰٓittaqāhe maintained righteousness. ﴿٣٢﴾
[53:33] Have you noted the one who turned away?
أَفَرَءَيْتَafara-aytaThen have you seenٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoتَوَلَّىٰtawallāhe turned away? ﴿٣٣﴾
[53:34] Rarely did he give to charity, and then very little.
وَأَعْطَىٰwa-aʿṭāAnd he gaveقَلِيلًاqalīlana little / rarely,وَأَكْدَىٰٓwa-akdāand he withheld grudgingly. ﴿٣٤﴾
[53:35] Did he possess knowledge of the future? Could he see it?
أَعِندَهُۥaʿindahuIs with himعِلْمُʿil'mu(the) knowledge (of)ٱلْغَيْبِl-ghaybithe unseen / future,فَهُوَfahuwaso heيَرَىٰٓyarā[he] sees? ﴿٣٥﴾
[53:36] Was he not informed of the teachings in the scripture of Moses?
أَمْamOr wasلَمْlamnotيُنَبَّأْyunabbahe informedبِمَاbimāin whatفِى(was) inصُحُفِṣuḥufi(the) writings / scriptures (of)مُوسَىٰmūsāMoses? ﴿٣٦﴾
[53:37] And Abraham who fulfilled?
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَwa-ib'rāhīmaAnd (of) Abraham,ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoوَفَّىٰٓwaffāhe fulfilled? ﴿٣٧﴾
[53:38] No soul bears the sins of another soul.
أَلَّاallāThat notتَزِرُtaziruyou will bearوَازِرَةٌwāziratuna bearer of burdensوِزْرَwiz'ra(the) burden (of)أُخْرَىٰukh'rāanother. ﴿٣٨﴾
[53:39] Every human being is responsible for his own works.
وَأَنwa-anAnd thatلَّيْسَlaysanot isلِلْإِنسَـٰنِlil'insānifor the man / human beingإِلَّاillāexceptمَاwhatسَعَىٰsaʿāhe strived / made effort / worked (for). ﴿٣٩﴾
[53:40] And everyone's works will be shown.
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd thatسَعْيَهُۥsaʿyahuhis striving / efforts / worksسَوْفَsawfasoonيُرَىٰyurāit will be seen. ﴿٤٠﴾
[53:41] Then they will be paid fully for such works.
ثُمَّthummaThenيُجْزَىٰهُyuj'zāhuhe will be compensated for itٱلْجَزَآءَl-jazāathe compensation / paymentٱلْأَوْفَىٰl-awfāthe fullest. ﴿٤١﴾
[53:42] To your Lord is the final destiny.
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd thatإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord (is)ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰl-muntahāthe final goal / destiny. ﴿٤٢﴾
[53:43] He is the One who makes you laugh or cry.
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd that [He]هُوَhuwaHeأَضْحَكَaḍḥaka[He] makes laughوَأَبْكَىٰwa-abkāand [He] makes cry. ﴿٤٣﴾
[53:44] He is the One who controls death and life.
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd that [He]هُوَhuwaHeأَمَاتَamāta[He] causes deathوَأَحْيَاwa-aḥyāand [He] gives life. ﴿٤٤﴾
The Husband Determines The Baby's Gender
[53:45] He is the One who created the two kinds, male and female -
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd that Heخَلَقَkhalaqa[He] createdٱلزَّوْجَيْنِl-zawjaynithe pairs,ٱلذَّكَرَl-dhakarathe maleوَٱلْأُنثَىٰwal-unthāand the female- ﴿٤٥﴾
[53:46] from a tiny drop of semen.
مِنminfromنُّطْفَةٍnuṭ'fatina semen-drop / tiny dropإِذَاidhāwhenتُمْنَىٰtum'nāit is emitted. ﴿٤٦﴾
[53:47] He will effect the recreation.
وَأَنَّwa-annaAnd thatعَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon Him (is)ٱلنَّشْأَةَl-nashatathe production / origination / initiationٱلْأُخْرَىٰl-ukh'rāthe other / another. ﴿٤٧﴾
[53:48] He is the One who makes you rich or poor.
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd that [He]هُوَhuwaHeأَغْنَىٰaghnā[He] made free from need / richوَأَقْنَىٰwa-aqnāand [He] caused to acquire / made satisfied. ﴿٤٨﴾
[53:49] He is the Lord of the galaxies.
وَأَنَّهُۥwa-annahuAnd that [He]هُوَhuwaHe (is)رَبُّrabbu(the) Lord (of)ٱلشِّعْرَىٰl-shiʿ'rāthe galaxies. ﴿٤٩﴾
[53:50] He is the One who annihilated ancient 'Ãd.
وَأَنَّهُۥٓwa-annahuAnd that Heأَهْلَكَahlaka[He] destroyed / annihilatedعَادًاʿādanAdٱلْأُولَىٰl-ūlāthe first / former / ancient. ﴿٥٠﴾
[53:51] And wiped out Thamûd.
وَثَمُودَا۟wathamūdāAnd Thamud,فَمَآfamāso notأَبْقَىٰabqāHe spared. ﴿٥١﴾
[53:52] Also the people of Noah before that; they were evil transgressors.
وَقَوْمَwaqawmaAnd (the) people (of)نُوحٍnūḥinNoahمِّنminfromقَبْلُqablubefore.إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُوا۟kānū[they] wereهُمْhum[they]أَظْلَمَaẓlamamore unjust / evilوَأَطْغَىٰwa-aṭghāand more rebellious / transgressors. ﴿٥٢﴾
[53:53] The evil communities (of Sodom and Gomorrah) were the lowliest.
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَwal-mu'tafikataAnd the overturned cities (evil communities)أَهْوَىٰahwāthe lowliest. ﴿٥٣﴾
[53:54] Consequently, they utterly vanished.
فَغَشَّىٰهَاfaghashāhāSo it covered / overwhelmed themمَاwhatغَشَّىٰghashācovered / overwhelmed. ﴿٥٤﴾
[53:55] Which of your Lord's marvels can you deny?
فَبِأَىِّfabi-ayyiSo whichءَالَآءِālāi(the) marvels (of)رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordتَتَمَارَىٰtatamārāyou doubt / deny? ﴿٥٥﴾
[53:56] This is a warning like the older ones.
هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)نَذِيرٌnadhīruna warner,مِّنَminafromٱلنُّذُرِl-nudhurithe warningsٱلْأُولَىٰٓl-ūlāthe former. ﴿٥٦﴾
[53:57] The inevitable is imminent.
أَزِفَتِazifati[It] approached / became inevitableٱلْـَٔازِفَةُl-āzifatuthe imminent. ﴿٥٧﴾
[53:58] None besides GOD can relieve it.
لَيْسَlaysaNot isلَهَاlahāfor itمِنminfromدُونِdūnibesidesٱللَّهِl-lahiGodكَاشِفَةٌkāshifatunany remover. ﴿٥٨﴾
[53:59] Are you questioning this matter?
أَفَمِنْafaminThen is it fromهَـٰذَاhādhāthisٱلْحَدِيثِl-ḥadīthi[the] Hadith / narration / matterتَعْجَبُونَtaʿjabūnayou [all] wonder (question)? ﴿٥٩﴾
[53:60] Are you laughing, instead of crying?
وَتَضْحَكُونَwataḍḥakūnaAnd you [all] laughوَلَاwalāand notتَبْكُونَtabkūnayou [all] weep? ﴿٦٠﴾
[53:61] Are you insisting on your ways?
وَأَنتُمْwa-antumWhile you [all]سَـٰمِدُونَsāmidūnaones who remain proudly heedless and haughty? ﴿٦١﴾
[53:62] You shall fall prostrate before GOD, and worship.
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟fa-us'judūSo prostrate [you all]لِلَّهِlillahito Godوَٱعْبُدُوا۟wa-uʿ'budūand worship (Him) [you all]. ﴿٦٢﴾
