In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[37:1] The arrangers in columns.
وَٱلصَّـٰٓفَّـٰتِwal-ṣāfātiBy the arrangersصَفًّاṣaffan(in) rank / row / line / column. ﴿١﴾
[37:2] The blamers of those to be blamed.
فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِfal-zājirātiAnd the rebukers / blamers (of)زَجْرًاzajran(the) rebuked / blamed. ﴿٢﴾
[37:3] The reciters of the messages.
فَٱلتَّـٰلِيَـٰتِfal-tāliyātiAnd the reciters (of)ذِكْرًاdhik'ran(the) message. ﴿٣﴾
[37:4] Your god is only one.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,إِلَـٰهَكُمْilāhakumyour god (is)لَوَٰحِدٌlawāḥidunsurely one. ﴿٤﴾
[37:5] The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them, and Lord of the easts.*
رَّبُّrabbuLord (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضِwal-arḍiand the earth,وَمَاwamāand what (is)بَيْنَهُمَاbaynahumābetween both of themوَرَبُّwarabbuand Lord (of)ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِl-mashāriqi[the] place of risings / easts. ﴿٥﴾
*37:5 Every heavenly body rises on the planet earth, and sets. Every rise is called "east."
[37:6] We have adorned the lowest heaven with adorning planets.*
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weزَيَّنَّاzayyannā[we] adornedٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heavenٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe lowestبِزِينَةٍbizīnatinwith adornments (of)ٱلْكَوَاكِبِl-kawākibi[the] stars / planets. ﴿٦﴾
*37:6 We live in the innermost and smallest universe. The jinns are confined to this universe.
[37:7] We guarded it from every evil devil.
وَحِفْظًاwaḥif'ẓanAnd guardedمِّنminagainstكُلِّkullieveryشَيْطَـٰنٍshayṭānindevilمَّارِدٍmāridinrebellious / evil. ﴿٧﴾
[37:8] They cannot spy on the High Society; they get bombarded from every side.
لَّاlāNotيَسَّمَّعُونَyassammaʿūnathey can listen (spy)إِلَىilātoٱلْمَلَإِl-mala-ithe leaders / assembly / Societyٱلْأَعْلَىٰl-aʿlā[the] exalted / High,وَيُقْذَفُونَwayuq'dhafūnaand they are pelted / bombardedمِنminfromكُلِّkullieveryجَانِبٍjānibinside. ﴿٨﴾
[37:9] They have been condemned; they have incurred an eternal retribution.
دُحُورًاduḥūranRejected / banished / condemned;وَلَهُمْwalahumand for them (is)عَذَابٌʿadhābuna retributionوَاصِبٌwāṣibunperpetual / eternal. ﴿٩﴾
[37:10] If any of them ventures to charge the outer limits, he gets struck with a fierce projectile.
إِلَّاillāButمَنْman(he) whoخَطِفَkhaṭifahe quickly moved to snatch / chargedٱلْخَطْفَةَl-khaṭfata[the] snatchingفَأَتْبَعَهُۥfa-atbaʿahuthen [it] pursued / followed himشِهَابٌshihābuna burning flame / projectile,ثَاقِبٌthāqibunpiercing / fierce. ﴿١٠﴾
[37:11] Ask them, "Are they more difficult to create, or the other creations?" We created them from wet mud.
فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْfa-is'taftihimThen ask their opinion,أَهُمْahum"Are theyأَشَدُّashaddumore difficult (of)خَلْقًاkhalqana creationأَمamorمَّنْman(those) whomخَلَقْنَآkhalaqnāwe created?"إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weخَلَقْنَـٰهُمkhalaqnāhum[we] created themمِّنminfromطِينٍṭīnina clay / mudلَّازِبٍۭlāzibinsticky / wet. ﴿١١﴾
[37:12] While you are awed, they mock.
بَلْbalNay,عَجِبْتَʿajib'tayou wonder / are awed,وَيَسْخَرُونَwayaskharūnawhile they mock. ﴿١٢﴾
[37:13] When reminded, they take no heed.
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenذُكِّرُوا۟dhukkirūthey were reminded,لَاlānotيَذْكُرُونَyadhkurūnathey take heed. ﴿١٣﴾
[37:14] When they see proof, they ridicule it.
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenرَأَوْا۟ra-awthey sawءَايَةًāyatana sign / proof,يَسْتَسْخِرُونَyastaskhirūnathey mock. ﴿١٤﴾
[37:15] They say, "This is obviously magic!
وَقَالُوٓا۟waqālūAnd they said,إِنْin"Notهَـٰذَآhādhā(is) thisإِلَّاillāexceptسِحْرٌsiḥ'runa magicمُّبِينٌmubīnunobvious. ﴿١٥﴾
[37:16] "After we die and become dust and bones, do we get resurrected?
أَءِذَاa-idhā"What! When [in the future]مِتْنَاmit'nāwe diedوَكُنَّاwakunnāand we becameتُرَابًاturābandustوَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanand bones,أَءِنَّاa-innāwill we (then)لَمَبْعُوثُونَlamabʿūthūnacertainly be ones resurrected? ﴿١٦﴾
[37:17] "Even our ancient ancestors?"
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَاawaābāunā"Or our fathersٱلْأَوَّلُونَl-awalūnathe former [ones]?" ﴿١٧﴾
[37:18] Say, "Yes, you will be forcibly summoned."
قُلْqulSay,نَعَمْnaʿam"Yes,وَأَنتُمْwa-antumand you [all] (will be)دَٰخِرُونَdākhirūna[ones] humbled / forcibly." ﴿١٨﴾
[37:19] All it takes is one nudge, whereupon they (stand up) looking.
فَإِنَّمَاfa-innamāThen onlyهِىَhiyaitزَجْرَةٌzajratuna shout / cry / nudgeوَٰحِدَةٌwāḥidatunsingle,فَإِذَاfa-idhāthen, behold!هُمْhumTheyيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūna[they] look. ﴿١٩﴾
[37:20] They will say, "Woe to us; this is the Day of Judgment."
وَقَالُوا۟waqālūAnd they said,يَـٰوَيْلَنَاyāwaylanā"O! Woe to us!هَـٰذَاhādhāThis (is)يَوْمُyawmu(the) Day (of)ٱلدِّينِl-dīni[the] Judgment." ﴿٢٠﴾
[37:21] This is the day of decision that you used to disbelieve in.
هَـٰذَاhādhā"This (is)يَوْمُyawmu(the) Day (of)ٱلْفَصْلِl-faṣli[the] Judgmentٱلَّذِىalladhīwhichكُنتُمkuntumyou [all] used toبِهِۦbihiin itتُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūna[you all] denied." ﴿٢١﴾
[37:22] Summon the transgressors, and their spouses, and the idols they worshiped
ٱحْشُرُوا۟uḥ'shurūSummon [you all]ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoظَلَمُوا۟ẓalamū[they] did wrong / transgressed,وَأَزْوَٰجَهُمْwa-azwājahumand their spouses,وَمَاwamāand whatكَانُوا۟kānūthey used toيَعْبُدُونَyaʿbudūnathey worship ﴿٢٢﴾
[37:23] beside GOD, and guide them to the path of Hell.
مِنminfromدُونِdūnibesidesٱللَّهِl-lahiGod,فَٱهْدُوهُمْfa-ih'dūhumthen guide them [you all]إِلَىٰilātoصِرَٰطِṣirāṭi(the) path (of)ٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmithe Hellfire. ﴿٢٣﴾
[37:24] Stop them, and ask them:
وَقِفُوهُمْwaqifūhumStop them [you all];إِنَّهُمinnahumindeed, theyمَّسْـُٔولُونَmasūlūnathose who are asked / questioned. ﴿٢٤﴾
[37:25] "Why do you not help one another?"
مَاmā"Whatلَكُمْlakumfor you [all]لَاlānotتَنَاصَرُونَtanāṣarūnayou [all] help (one another)?" ﴿٢٥﴾
[37:26] They will be, on that day, totally submitting.
بَلْbalNay,هُمُhumutheyٱلْيَوْمَl-yawma(on) the dayمُسْتَسْلِمُونَmus'taslimūnaones who will totally submit. ﴿٢٦﴾
Mutual Blaming
[37:27] They will come to each other, questioning and blaming one another.
وَأَقْبَلَwa-aqbalaAnd [he] (will) approachبَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them*عَلَىٰʿalāto*بَعْضٍbaʿḍinsome others* (to one another)يَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūna[they] will ask one another. ﴿٢٧﴾
[37:28] They will say (to their leaders), "You used to come to us from the right side."
قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey said,إِنَّكُمْinnakum"Indeed, [you all]كُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] used toتَأْتُونَنَاtatūnanā[you all] come to usعَنِʿanifromٱلْيَمِينِl-yamīnithe right (side)." ﴿٢٨﴾
[37:29] They will respond, "It is you who were not believers.
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,بَلbal"Nay,لَّمْlamnotتَكُونُوا۟takūnūyou [all] areمُؤْمِنِينَmu'minīnabelievers. ﴿٢٩﴾
[37:30] "We never had any power over you; it is you who were wicked.
وَمَاwamā"And notكَانَkānawasلَنَاlanāfor usعَلَيْكُمʿalaykumover you [all]مِّنminanyسُلْطَـٰنٍۭsul'ṭāninauthority / power.بَلْbalNay,كُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] wereقَوْمًاqawmana peopleطَـٰغِينَṭāghīnatransgressors / wicked [ones]. ﴿٣٠﴾
[37:31] "We justly incurred our Lord's judgment; now we have to suffer.
فَحَقَّfaḥaqqa"So it proved trueعَلَيْنَاʿalaynāagainst usقَوْلُqawlu(the) word / judgmentرَبِّنَآrabbinā(of) our Lord;إِنَّاinnāindeed, weلَذَآئِقُونَladhāiqūnasurely [ones] to taste / experience (the consequences). ﴿٣١﴾
[37:32] "We misled you, only because we were astray."
فَأَغْوَيْنَـٰكُمْfa-aghwaynākum"So we misled you [all]إِنَّاinnāindeed, weكُنَّاkunnā[we] wereغَـٰوِينَghāwīna[ones] astray." ﴿٣٢﴾
[37:33] Thus, together they will all partake of the retribution on that day.
فَإِنَّهُمْfa-innahumThen indeed, theyيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat dayفِىfīinٱلْعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe retributionمُشْتَرِكُونَmush'tarikūna[ones who] will be sharers / partakers. ﴿٣٣﴾
[37:34] This is how we requite the guilty.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikathus,نَفْعَلُnafʿaluwe dealبِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَbil-muj'rimīnawith the guilty ones. ﴿٣٤﴾
The First Commandment
[37:35] When they were told, "Lã Elãha Ella Allãh (There is no other god beside GOD)," they turned arrogant.
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُوٓا۟kānū[they] were,إِذَاidhāwhenقِيلَqīlait was saidلَهُمْlahumto them,لَآlā"(There is) noإِلَـٰهَilāhagodإِلَّاillāexceptٱللَّهُl-lahuGod,"يَسْتَكْبِرُونَyastakbirūna[they] turn arrogant. ﴿٣٥﴾
[37:36] They said, "Shall we leave our gods for the sake of a crazy poet?"
وَيَقُولُونَwayaqūlūnaAnd they say,أَئِنَّاa-innā"Shall weلَتَارِكُوٓا۟latārikūto leaveءَالِهَتِنَاālihatināour godsلِشَاعِرٍlishāʿirinfor a poetمَّجْنُونٍۭmajnūninone who is crazy?" ﴿٣٦﴾
[37:37] In fact, he has brought the truth, and has confirmed the messengers.
بَلْbalNay / In fact,جَآءَjāahe came / broughtبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqi[with] the truthوَصَدَّقَwaṣaddaqaand he confirmedٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿٣٧﴾
[37:38] Most assuredly, you will taste the most painful retribution.
إِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you [all]لَذَآئِقُوا۟ladhāiqūsurely taste [you all]ٱلْعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe retributionٱلْأَلِيمِl-alīmithe painful. ﴿٣٨﴾
[37:39] You are requited only for what you have done.
وَمَاwamāAnd notتُجْزَوْنَtuj'zawnayou [all] will be requitedإِلَّاillāexcept (for)مَاmāwhatكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] used toتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūna[you all] do. ﴿٣٩﴾
[37:40] Only GOD's servants who are absolutely devoted to Him alone (will be saved).
إِلَّاillāExceptعِبَادَʿibāda(the) servantsٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Godٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathose who are truly sincere / exclusively and absolutely devoted. ﴿٤٠﴾
[37:41] They have deserved provisions that are reserved specifically for them.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseلَهُمْlahumfor them (will be)رِزْقٌriz'quna provisionمَّعْلُومٌmaʿlūmunknown / determined / specified. ﴿٤١﴾
[37:42] All kinds of fruits. They will be honored.
فَوَٰكِهُfawākihuFruitsوَهُمwahumand they (will be)مُّكْرَمُونَmuk'ramūnaones honored. ﴿٤٢﴾
[37:43] In the gardens of bliss.
فِىfīInجَنَّـٰتِjannātigardens (of)ٱلنَّعِيمِl-naʿīmi[the] bliss. ﴿٤٣﴾
[37:44] On furnishings close to one another.
عَلَىٰʿalāOnسُرُرٍsururinthrones / furnishingsمُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَmutaqābilīnaones who are facing each other. ﴿٤٤﴾
[37:45] Cups of pure drinks will be offered to them.
يُطَافُyuṭāfu[It] will be circulatedعَلَيْهِمʿalayhimamong themبِكَأْسٍbikasinwith a cupمِّنminfromمَّعِينٍۭmaʿīnina flowing spring. ﴿٤٥﴾
[37:46] Clear and delicious for the drinkers.
بَيْضَآءَbayḍāaClearلَذَّةٍladhatindeliciousلِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَlilshāribīnafor the drinkers. ﴿٤٦﴾
[37:47] Never polluted, and never exhausted.
لَاlāNotفِيهَاfīhāin it (is)غَوْلٌghawlunintoxication / headache (polluted)وَلَاwalāand notهُمْhumtheyعَنْهَاʿanhāfrom itيُنزَفُونَyunzafūna[they] will be exhausted / deprived of intellectual faculties. ﴿٤٧﴾
[37:48] With them will be wonderful companions.
وَعِندَهُمْwaʿindahumAnd with themقَـٰصِرَٰتُqāṣirāturestraining*ٱلطَّرْفِl-ṭarfithe glance/ looking*عِينٌʿīnunlovely / wide-eyed (*wonderful companions). ﴿٤٨﴾
[37:49] Protected like fragile eggs.
كَأَنَّهُنَّka-annahunnaAs if they wereبَيْضٌbayḍuneggs,مَّكْنُونٌmaknūnunones well protected. ﴿٤٩﴾
The Dwellers of Heaven Visit the Dwellers of Hell
[37:50] They will come to each other, and confer with one another.
فَأَقْبَلَfa-aqbalaAnd [he] approachedبَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of them*عَلَىٰʿalāto*بَعْضٍbaʿḍinsome others (*to each other)يَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūna[they] will ask one another. ﴿٥٠﴾
[37:51] One of them will say, "I used to have a friend.
قَالَqāla[He] saidقَآئِلٌqāiluna speakerمِّنْهُمْmin'humamong them,إِنِّىinnī"Indeed, Iكَانَkānaused to (have)لِىlīfor meقَرِينٌqarīnuna companion / friend. ﴿٥١﴾
[37:52] "He used to mock: 'Do you believe all this?
يَقُولُyaqūlu"He (used to) say,أَءِنَّكَa-innaka 'Are you indeedلَمِنَlaminareally ofٱلْمُصَدِّقِينَl-muṣadiqīnathose who confirm / believe? ﴿٥٢﴾
[37:53] " 'After we die and turn into dust and bones, do we get called to account?' "
أَءِذَاa-idhā" 'What! When [in the future]مِتْنَاmit'nāwe diedوَكُنَّاwakunnāand we becameتُرَابًاturābandustوَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanand bones,أَءِنَّاa-innāwill weلَمَدِينُونَlamadīnūnasurely be those brought to judgment / account?' " ﴿٥٣﴾
[37:54] He will say, "Just take a look!"
قَالَqālaHe said,هَلْhal"Willأَنتُمantumyou [all] (be)مُّطَّلِعُونَmuṭṭaliʿūnathose who look down?" ﴿٥٤﴾
[37:55] When he looks, he will see his friend in the heart of Hell.*
فَٱطَّلَعَfa-iṭṭalaʿaThen he lookedفَرَءَاهُfaraāhuand [he] saw himفِىfīinسَوَآءِsawāi(the) midst / middle (of)ٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmithe Hellfire. ﴿٥٥﴾
*37:55 People who make it to Heaven will be able to visit their relatives and friends in Hell, without adverse consequences. In the Hereafter, anyone can move downward, but not upward beyond a certain limit. The limit is decided by one's degree of growth and development (App. 5).
[37:56] He (will go to him and) say, "By GOD, you almost ruined me.
قَالَqālaHe said,تَٱللَّهِtal-lahi"By God,إِنinindeed,كِدتَّkidttayou almostلَتُرْدِينِlatur'dīnisurely [you] have ruined me. ﴿٥٦﴾
[37:57] "If it were not for my Lord's blessing, I would have been with you now.
وَلَوْلَاwalawlā"And if not (for)نِعْمَةُniʿ'matu(the) grace / blessing (of)رَبِّىrabbīmy Lord,لَكُنتُlakuntucertainly, I would have beenمِنَminaamongٱلْمُحْضَرِينَl-muḥ'ḍarīnathose presented / fetched / brought along. ﴿٥٧﴾
[37:58] "(Do you still believe) that we die,
أَفَمَاafamā"Then do not (you believe)نَحْنُnaḥnuwe (are)بِمَيِّتِينَbimayyitīnaever ones who die, ﴿٥٨﴾
[37:59] "only the first death, and we never receive any requital?"
إِلَّاillā"exceptمَوْتَتَنَاmawtatanāour deathٱلْأُولَىٰl-ūlāthe first,وَمَاwamāand notنَحْنُnaḥnuwe (are)بِمُعَذَّبِينَbimuʿadhabīnaever ones who are punished?" ﴿٥٩﴾
Redemption: The Greatest Triumph
[37:60] Such is the greatest triumph.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰذَاhādhāthisلَهُوَlahuwasurely it (is)ٱلْفَوْزُl-fawzuthe triumphٱلْعَظِيمُl-ʿaẓīmu[the] great. ﴿٦٠﴾
[37:61] This is what every worker should work for.
لِمِثْلِlimith'liFor (the) example (of)هَـٰذَاhādhāthisفَلْيَعْمَلِfalyaʿmalithen let him workٱلْعَـٰمِلُونَl-ʿāmilūnathe workers. ﴿٦١﴾
[37:62] Is this a better destiny, or the tree of bitterness?
أَذَٰلِكَadhālikaIs thatخَيْرٌkhayrunbetterنُّزُلًاnuzulan(as) hospitality / destinyأَمْamor isشَجَرَةُshajaratu(the) tree (of)ٱلزَّقُّومِl-zaqūmithe deadly food / bitterness? ﴿٦٢﴾
[37:63] We have rendered it a punishment for the transgressors.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weجَعَلْنَـٰهَاjaʿalnāhā[we] rendered itفِتْنَةًfit'natana trial / punishmentلِّلظَّـٰلِمِينَlilẓẓālimīnafor the wrongdoers / transgressors. ﴿٦٣﴾
[37:64] It is a tree that grows in the heart of Hell.
إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it (is)شَجَرَةٌshajaratuna treeتَخْرُجُtakhrujuit grows فِىٓfīinأَصْلِaṣli(the) source / root / heart (of)ٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmithe Hellfire. ﴿٦٤﴾
[37:65] Its flowers look like the devils' heads.
طَلْعُهَاṭalʿuhāIts emerging fruit / flowersكَأَنَّهُۥka-annahuas if it (were)رُءُوسُruūsuheads (of)ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِl-shayāṭīnithe devils. ﴿٦٥﴾
[37:66] They will eat from it until their bellies are filled up.
فَإِنَّهُمْfa-innahumAnd indeed, theyلَـَٔاكِلُونَlaākilūnasurely ones eatingمِنْهَاmin'hāfrom itفَمَالِـُٔونَfamāliūnaand ones who fillمِنْهَاmin'hāthereinٱلْبُطُونَl-buṭūnathe bellies. ﴿٦٦﴾
[37:67] Then they will top it with a hellish drink.
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّinnaindeed,لَهُمْlahumfor themعَلَيْهَاʿalayhāover it (is)لَشَوْبًاlashawbansurely a mixtureمِّنْminofحَمِيمٍḥamīminboiling water. ﴿٦٧﴾
[37:68] Then they will return to Hell.
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّinnaindeed,مَرْجِعَهُمْmarjiʿahumtheir returnلَإِلَىla-ilāsurely toٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmithe Hellfire. ﴿٦٨﴾
They Followed Their Parents Blindly
[37:69] They found their parents astray.
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed, theyأَلْفَوْا۟alfaw[they] foundءَابَآءَهُمْābāahumtheir fathers / parentsضَآلِّينَḍāllīna[ones] astray. ﴿٦٩﴾
[37:70] And they blindly followed in their footsteps.
فَهُمْfahumSo theyعَلَىٰٓʿalāonءَاثَـٰرِهِمْāthārihimtheir footstepsيُهْرَعُونَyuh'raʿūnathey hastened / quickly followed. ﴿٧٠﴾
[37:71] Most of the previous generations have strayed in the same manner.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,ضَلَّḍalla[he] strayedقَبْلَهُمْqablahumbefore themأَكْثَرُaktharumost (of)ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former [ones] (people) / past generations. ﴿٧١﴾
[37:72] We have sent to them warners.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,أَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentفِيهِمfīhimamong themمُّنذِرِينَmundhirīnawarners. ﴿٧٢﴾
[37:73] Note the consequences for those who have been warned.
فَٱنظُرْfa-unẓurThen seeكَيْفَkayfahowكَانَkānawasعَـٰقِبَةُʿāqibatu(the) end / consequence (for)ٱلْمُنذَرِينَl-mundharīnathose who were warned. ﴿٧٣﴾
[37:74] Only GOD's servants who are absolutely devoted to Him alone (are saved).
إِلَّاillāExceptعِبَادَʿibāda(the) servants (of)ٱللَّهِl-lahiGodٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathose who are truly sincere / exclusively and absolutely devoted. ﴿٧٤﴾
Noah
[37:75] Thus, Noah called upon us, and we were the best responders.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,نَادَىٰنَاnādānā[he] called usنُوحٌnūḥunNoah;فَلَنِعْمَfalaniʿ'maand surely (we were the) best (of)ٱلْمُجِيبُونَl-mujībūnathe responders. ﴿٧٥﴾
[37:76] We saved him and his family from the great disaster.
وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُwanajjaynāhuAnd we saved himوَأَهْلَهُۥwa-ahlahuand his familyمِنَminafromٱلْكَرْبِl-karbithe distress / disaster,ٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe great. ﴿٧٦﴾
[37:77] We made his companions the survivors.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeذُرِّيَّتَهُۥdhurriyyatahuhis descendants / companionsهُمُhumutheyٱلْبَاقِينَl-bāqīnathe survivors. ﴿٧٧﴾
[37:78] And we preserved his history for subsequent generations.
وَتَرَكْنَاwataraknāAnd we leftعَلَيْهِʿalayhifor himفِىfīamongٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīnathe later generations. ﴿٧٨﴾
[37:79] Peace be upon Noah among the peoples.
سَلَـٰمٌsalāmunPeace (be)عَلَىٰʿalāuponنُوحٍnūḥinNoahفِىfīamongٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīnaall (the) people. ﴿٧٩﴾
[37:80] We thus reward the righteous.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikathusنَجْزِىnajzīwe rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe righteous [ones]. ﴿٨٠﴾
[37:81] He is one of our believing servants.
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he (was)مِنْminofعِبَادِنَاʿibādināour servantsٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers. ﴿٨١﴾
[37:82] We drowned all the others.
ثُمَّthummaThenأَغْرَقْنَاaghraqnāwe drownedٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَl-ākharīnathe others. ﴿٨٢﴾
Abraham
[37:83] Among his followers was Abraham.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,مِنminfromشِيعَتِهِۦshīʿatihihis partyلَإِبْرَٰهِيمَla-ib'rāhīma(was) surely Abraham. ﴿٨٣﴾
[37:84] He came to his Lord wholeheartedly.
إِذْidhWhenجَآءَjāahe cameرَبَّهُۥrabbahu(to) his Lordبِقَلْبٍbiqalbinwith a heartسَلِيمٍsalīminsound / whole. ﴿٨٤﴾
[37:85] He said to his father and his people, "What are you worshiping?
إِذْidhWhenقَالَqālahe saidلِأَبِيهِli-abīhito his fatherوَقَوْمِهِۦwaqawmihiand his people,مَاذَاmādhā"What then (is it)تَعْبُدُونَtaʿbudūnayou [all] worship? ﴿٨٥﴾
[37:86] "Is it these fabricated gods, instead of GOD, that you want?
أَئِفْكًاa-if'kan"Is it falsehood / fabricatedءَالِهَةًālihatangodsدُونَdūnaother thanٱللَّهِl-lahiGodتُرِيدُونَturīdūnayou [all] want / desire? ﴿٨٦﴾
[37:87] "What do you think of the Lord of the universe?"
فَمَاfamā"Then what (is)ظَنُّكُمẓannukumyour thoughtبِرَبِّbirabbiof (the) Lord (of)ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīnathe worlds / universe?" ﴿٨٧﴾
[37:88] He looked carefully at the stars.
فَنَظَرَfanaẓaraThen he lookedنَظْرَةًnaẓratana look فِىfīatٱلنُّجُومِl-nujūmithe stars. ﴿٨٨﴾
[37:89] Then he gave up and said, "I am tired of this!"
فَقَالَfaqālaAnd he said,إِنِّىinnī"Indeed, I amسَقِيمٌsaqīmunsick / tired." ﴿٨٩﴾
[37:90] They turned away from him.
فَتَوَلَّوْا۟fatawallawSo they turned awayعَنْهُʿanhufrom himمُدْبِرِينَmud'birīnaones retreating. ﴿٩٠﴾
[37:91] He then turned on their idols, saying, "Would you like to eat?
فَرَاغَfarāghaThen he turnedإِلَىٰٓilātoءَالِهَتِهِمْālihatihimtheir godsفَقَالَfaqālaand [he] said,أَلَاalā"Do notتَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou [all] eat? ﴿٩١﴾
[37:92] "Why do you not speak?"
مَاmā"What (is)لَكُمْlakumfor you [all]لَاlānotتَنطِقُونَtanṭiqūnayou [all] speak?" ﴿٩٢﴾
[37:93] He then destroyed them.
فَرَاغَfarāghaThen he turnedعَلَيْهِمْʿalayhimupon themضَرْبًۢاḍarbanstrikingبِٱلْيَمِينِbil-yamīniwith the right hand. ﴿٩٣﴾
[37:94] They went to him in a great rage.
فَأَقْبَلُوٓا۟fa-aqbalūThen they turned [towards] / advancedإِلَيْهِilayhitowards himيَزِفُّونَyaziffūna[they] hastening / running. ﴿٩٤﴾
[37:95] He said, "How can you worship what you carve?
قَالَqālaHe said,أَتَعْبُدُونَataʿbudūna"Do you [all] worshipمَاmāwhatتَنْحِتُونَtanḥitūnayou [all] carve? ﴿٩٥﴾
[37:96] "When GOD has created you, and everything you make!"
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahu"While GodخَلَقَكُمْkhalaqakumHe created you [all]وَمَاwamāand whatتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou [all] make?" ﴿٩٦﴾
[37:97] They said, "Let us build a great fire, and throw him into it."
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,ٱبْنُوا۟ib'nū"Build [you all]لَهُۥlahufor himبُنْيَـٰنًاbun'yānana structureفَأَلْقُوهُfa-alqūhuand throw him [you all]فِىfīintoٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmithe blazing fire." ﴿٩٧﴾
[37:98] They schemed against him, but we made them the losers.
فَأَرَادُوا۟fa-arādūAnd they intendedبِهِۦbihifor himكَيْدًاkaydana plot / scheme,فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُfajaʿalnāhumubut we made themٱلْأَسْفَلِينَl-asfalīnathe lowest [ones] (losers). ﴿٩٨﴾
[37:99] He said, "I am going to my Lord; He will guide me."
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd he said,إِنِّىinnī"Indeed, I amذَاهِبٌdhāhibungoingإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّىrabbīmy Lord,سَيَهْدِينِsayahdīniHe will guide me." ﴿٩٩﴾
[37:100] "My Lord, grant me righteous children."
رَبِّrabbi"My Lordهَبْhabgrantلِىlīfor meمِنَminafromٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous [ones]." ﴿١٠٠﴾
[37:101] We gave him good news of a good child.
فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُfabasharnāhuSo we gave him good newsبِغُلَـٰمٍbighulāminof a boyحَلِيمٍḥalīminclement / good. ﴿١٠١﴾
Satanic Dream*
[37:102] When he grew enough to work with him, he said, "My son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you. What do you think?" He said, "O my father, do what you are commanded to do. You will find me, GOD willing, patient."
فَلَمَّاfalammāThen whenبَلَغَbalaghahe reachedمَعَهُmaʿahuwith himٱلسَّعْىَl-saʿyathe age of workingقَالَqālahe said,يَـٰبُنَىَّyābunayya"O my son!إِنِّىٓinnīIndeed, Iأَرَىٰarā[I] have seenفِىfīinٱلْمَنَامِl-manāmithe sleep / dreamأَنِّىٓannīthat I amأَذْبَحُكَadhbaḥuka[I] sacrifice you,فَٱنظُرْfa-unẓurso look / contemplateمَاذَاmādhāwhat then (is it)تَرَىٰtarāyou see / think?"قَالَqālaHe said,يَـٰٓأَبَتِyāabati"O my father!ٱفْعَلْif'ʿalDoمَاmāwhatتُؤْمَرُtu'maruyou are commanded.سَتَجِدُنِىٓsatajidunīYou will find me,إِنinifشَآءَshāa[He] willedٱللَّهُl-lahuGodمِنَminaofٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَl-ṣābirīnathe steadfast ones / patient ones." ﴿١٠٢﴾
*37:102 The Most Merciful never advocates evil (7:28). As with Job, Satan claimed that Abraham loved his son too much, and was permitted to put Abraham to that severe test.
[37:103] They both submitted, and he put his forehead down (to sacrifice him).
فَلَمَّآfalammāThen whenأَسْلَمَاaslamāthey both submittedوَتَلَّهُۥwatallahuand he put him downلِلْجَبِينِlil'jabīniby the forehead. ﴿١٠٣﴾
God Intervenes to Save Abraham and Ismail
[37:104] We called him: "O Abraham.
وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُwanādaynāhuAnd we called him,أَنan[that],يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُyāib'rāhīmu"O Abraham! ﴿١٠٤﴾
[37:105] "You have believed the dream." We thus reward the righteous.
قَدْqad"Verily,صَدَّقْتَṣaddaqtayou substantiated / proved true / confirmed / believedٱلرُّءْيَآl-ru'yāthe vision / dream."إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikathusنَجْزِىnajzī[we] rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe righteous ones. ﴿١٠٥﴾
[37:106] That was an exacting test indeed.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,هَـٰذَاhādhāthisلَهُوَlahuwasurely it (was)ٱلْبَلَـٰٓؤُا۟l-balāuthe testٱلْمُبِينُl-mubīnuthe clear / profound (exacting). ﴿١٠٦﴾
[37:107] We ransomed (Ismail) by substituting an animal sacrifice.
وَفَدَيْنَـٰهُwafadaynāhuAnd we ransomed himبِذِبْحٍbidhib'ḥinwith a sacrificeعَظِيمٍʿaẓīmingreat. ﴿١٠٧﴾
[37:108] And we preserved his history for subsequent generations.
وَتَرَكْنَاwataraknāAnd we left / kept (his) historyعَلَيْهِʿalayhifor himفِىfīamongٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīnathe later generations. ﴿١٠٨﴾
[37:109] Peace be upon Abraham.
سَلَـٰمٌsalāmunPeace (be)عَلَىٰٓʿalāuponإِبْرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīmaAbraham. ﴿١٠٩﴾
[37:110] We thus reward the righteous.
كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusنَجْزِىnajzīwe rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe righteous ones. ﴿١١٠﴾
[37:111] He is one of our believing servants.
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he (was)مِنْminofعِبَادِنَاʿibādināour servantsٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers. ﴿١١١﴾
Birth of Isaac
[37:112] Then we gave him the good news about the birth of Isaac, to be one of the righteous prophets.
وَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُwabasharnāhuAnd we gave him good newsبِإِسْحَـٰقَbi-is'ḥāqaof Isaac,نَبِيًّاnabiyyana prophetمِّنَminaamongٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَl-ṣāliḥīnathe righteous ones. ﴿١١٢﴾
[37:113] We blessed him and Isaac. Among their descendants, some are righteous, and some are wicked transgressors.
وَبَـٰرَكْنَاwabāraknāAnd we blessedعَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon himوَعَلَىٰٓwaʿalāand uponإِسْحَـٰقَis'ḥāqaIsaac.وَمِنwaminAnd ofذُرِّيَّتِهِمَاdhurriyyatihimāboth their descendantsمُحْسِنٌmuḥ'sinunone who is righteousوَظَالِمٌwaẓālimunand (the) unjustلِّنَفْسِهِۦlinafsihito himself / his soulمُبِينٌmubīnunclear. ﴿١١٣﴾
Moses and Aaron
[37:114] We also blessed Moses and Aaron.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,مَنَنَّاmanannāwe conferred favor / blessedعَلَىٰʿalāuponمُوسَىٰmūsāMosesوَهَـٰرُونَwahārūnaand Aaron. ﴿١١٤﴾
[37:115] We delivered them and their people from the great disaster.
وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُمَاwanajjaynāhumāAnd we saved both of themوَقَوْمَهُمَاwaqawmahumāand both their peopleمِنَminafromٱلْكَرْبِl-karbithe distress / disasterٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe great. ﴿١١٥﴾
[37:116] We supported them, until they became the winners.
وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُمْwanaṣarnāhumAnd we helped them,فَكَانُوا۟fakānūso they becameهُمُhumu[they]ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَl-ghālibīnathe victors / winners. ﴿١١٦﴾
[37:117] We gave both of them the profound scripture.
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمَاwaātaynāhumāAnd we gave both of themٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe scriptureٱلْمُسْتَبِينَl-mus'tabīnathe one which makes clear. ﴿١١٧﴾
[37:118] We guided them in the right path.
وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمَاwahadaynāhumāAnd we guided both of themٱلصِّرَٰطَl-ṣirāṭa(to) the pathٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَl-mus'taqīmathe one which makes straight / right. ﴿١١٨﴾
[37:119] We preserved their history for subsequent generations.
وَتَرَكْنَاwataraknāAnd we left / kept (their) historyعَلَيْهِمَاʿalayhimāfor both of them,فِىfīamongٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīnathe later generations. ﴿١١٩﴾
[37:120] Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.
سَلَـٰمٌsalāmunPeace (be)عَلَىٰʿalāuponمُوسَىٰmūsāMosesوَهَـٰرُونَwahārūnaand Aaron. ﴿١٢٠﴾
[37:121] We thus reward the righteous.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikathusنَجْزِىnajzī[we] rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe righteous [ones]. ﴿١٢١﴾
[37:122] Both of them were among our righteous servants.
إِنَّهُمَاinnahumāIndeed, both of themمِنْmin(were) ofعِبَادِنَاʿibādināour servantsٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers. ﴿١٢٢﴾
Elias
[37:123] Elias was one of the messengers.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,إِلْيَاسَil'yāsaEliasلَمِنَlamina(was) surely amongٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿١٢٣﴾
[37:124] He said to his people, "Would you not work righteousness?
إِذْidhWhenقَالَqālahe saidلِقَوْمِهِۦٓliqawmihito his people,أَلَاalā"Will notتَتَّقُونَtattaqūna[you all] observe righteousness? ﴿١٢٤﴾
[37:125] "Do you worship a statue, instead of the Supreme Creator?
أَتَدْعُونَatadʿūna"Do you [all] call / invoke / worshipبَعْلًاbaʿlanBaal / statueوَتَذَرُونَwatadharūnaand you [all] forsakeأَحْسَنَaḥsana(the) Best / Supreme (of)ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَl-khāliqīnathe creators? ﴿١٢٥﴾
[37:126] "GOD; your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers!"
ٱللَّهَal-laha"God,رَبَّكُمْrabbakumyour Lordوَرَبَّwarabbaand (the) Lord (of)ءَابَآئِكُمُābāikumuyour fathers (of)ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former / past [ones]." ﴿١٢٦﴾
[37:127] They disbelieved him. Consequently, they had to be called to account.
فَكَذَّبُوهُfakadhabūhuBut they denied him,فَإِنَّهُمْfa-innahumso indeed, theyلَمُحْضَرُونَlamuḥ'ḍarūnasurely (will be) ones who are brought forth
(called to account). ﴿١٢٧﴾
[37:128] Only GOD's servants who are absolutely devoted to Him alone (are saved).
إِلَّاillāExceptعِبَادَʿibāda(the) servantsٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Godٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathose who are truly sincere / exclusively and absolutely devoted. ﴿١٢٨﴾
[37:129] We preserved his history for subsequent generations.
وَتَرَكْنَاwataraknāAnd we left / kepth (his) historyعَلَيْهِʿalayhifor himفِىfīamongٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَl-ākhirīnathe later generations. ﴿١٢٩﴾
[37:130] Peace be upon Elias, and all those like Elias.
سَلَـٰمٌsalāmunPeace (be)عَلَىٰٓʿalāuponإِلْ يَاسِينَil yāsīnaElias[es] (*Elias and those like him). ﴿١٣٠﴾
[37:131] We thus reward the righteous.
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, weكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikathusنَجْزِىnajzī[we] rewardٱلْمُحْسِنِينَl-muḥ'sinīnathe righteous [ones]. ﴿١٣١﴾
[37:132] He was one of our believing servants.
إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, he (was)مِنْminofعِبَادِنَاʿibādināour servantsٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَl-mu'minīnathe believers. ﴿١٣٢﴾
Lot
[37:133] Lot was one of the messengers.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,لُوطًاlūṭanLotلَّمِنَlamina(was) surely amongٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿١٣٣﴾
[37:134] We saved him and all his family.
إِذْidhWhenنَجَّيْنَـٰهُnajjaynāhuwe saved himوَأَهْلَهُۥٓwa-ahlahuand his familyأَجْمَعِينَajmaʿīnaall together. ﴿١٣٤﴾
[37:135] Only the old woman was doomed.
إِلَّاillāExceptعَجُوزًاʿajūzan(the) old womanفِىfī(was) amongٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَl-ghābirīnathose who remained behind. ﴿١٣٥﴾
[37:136] We annihilated all the others.
ثُمَّthummaThenدَمَّرْنَاdammarnāwe annihilatedٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَl-ākharīnathe others. ﴿١٣٦﴾
[37:137] You still pass by their ruins by day.
وَإِنَّكُمْwa-innakumAnd indeed, you [all]لَتَمُرُّونَlatamurrūnasurely [you all] passعَلَيْهِمʿalayhimby themمُّصْبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(by the) morning / day. ﴿١٣٧﴾
[37:138] And by night. Would you understand?
وَبِٱلَّيْلِwabi-al-layliAnd by [the] night.أَفَلَاafalāThen will notتَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou [all] understand? ﴿١٣٨﴾
Jonah
[37:139] Jonah was one of the messengers.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,يُونُسَyūnusaJonahلَمِنَlamina(was) surely amongٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿١٣٩﴾
[37:140] He escaped to the loaded ship.
إِذْidhWhenأَبَقَabaqahe ran away / escapedإِلَىilātoٱلْفُلْكِl-ful'kithe shipٱلْمَشْحُونِl-mashḥūni[the] loaded. ﴿١٤٠﴾
[37:141] He rebelled and thus, he joined the losers.
فَسَاهَمَfasāhamaThen he contended / challengedفَكَانَfakānaand he wasمِنَminaamongٱلْمُدْحَضِينَl-mud'ḥaḍīnathe refuted / rejected ones / losers. ﴿١٤١﴾
[37:142] Consequently, the fish swallowed him, and he was the one to blame.
فَٱلْتَقَمَهُfal-taqamahuThen [it] swallowed himٱلْحُوتُl-ḥūtuthe fish,وَهُوَwahuwawhile he (was)مُلِيمٌmulīmunone to blame. ﴿١٤٢﴾
[37:143] If it were not that he resorted to meditation (on GOD),
فَلَوْلَآfalawlāAnd if notأَنَّهُۥannahuthat heكَانَkāna[he] wasمِنَminaofٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَl-musabiḥīnathose who glorify (meditate), ﴿١٤٣﴾
[37:144] he would have stayed in its belly until the Day of Resurrection.
لَلَبِثَlalabithasurely he would have remainedفِىfīinبَطْنِهِۦٓbaṭnihiits bellyإِلَىٰilāuntilيَوْمِyawmi(the) Dayيُبْعَثُونَyub'ʿathūnathey are resurrected. ﴿١٤٤﴾
[37:145] We had him thrown up into the desert, exhausted.
فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُfanabadhnāhuBut we cast / ejected / threw himبِٱلْعَرَآءِbil-ʿarāionto the open shoreوَهُوَwahuwawhile he (was)سَقِيمٌsaqīmunweak / exhausted. ﴿١٤٥﴾
[37:146] We had a tree of edible fruit grown for him.
وَأَنۢبَتْنَاwa-anbatnāAnd we caused to growعَلَيْهِʿalayhifor himشَجَرَةًshajaratana treeمِّنminofيَقْطِينٍyaqṭīninedible fruit. ﴿١٤٦﴾
[37:147] Then we sent him to a hundred thousand,* or more.
وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُwa-arsalnāhuAnd we sent himإِلَىٰilātoمِا۟ئَةِmi-atia hundredأَلْفٍalfinthousandأَوْaworيَزِيدُونَyazīdūna[they be] more. ﴿١٤٧﴾
*37:147 The Quran mentions 30 numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 19, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 99, 100, 200, 300, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000, 50000, and 100000. The sum of these numbers is 162146, or 19x8534 (see Appendix 1).
[37:148] They did believe, and we let them enjoy this life.
فَـَٔامَنُوا۟faāmanūAnd they believed,فَمَتَّعْنَـٰهُمْfamattaʿnāhumso we gave them enjoymentإِلَىٰilāforحِينٍḥīnina time. ﴿١٤٨﴾
[37:149] Ask them if your Lord has daughters, while they have sons!
فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْfa-is'taftihimThen ask their opinion,أَلِرَبِّكَalirabbika"Is for your Lordٱلْبَنَاتُl-banātu[the] daughtersوَلَهُمُwalahumuwhile for them (are)ٱلْبَنُونَl-banūnathe sons? ﴿١٤٩﴾
[37:150] Did we create the angels to be females? Did they witness that?
أَمْam"Or haveخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَl-malāikatathe angelsإِنَـٰثًاināthanfemalesوَهُمْwahumwhile they (were)شَـٰهِدُونَshāhidūnawitnesses?" ﴿١٥٠﴾
[37:151] Indeed, they grossly blaspheme when they say -
أَلَآalāNo doubt,إِنَّهُمinnahumindeed, theyمِّنْminofإِفْكِهِمْif'kihimtheir falsehoodلَيَقُولُونَlayaqūlūna[surely] they say, ﴿١٥١﴾
[37:152] "GOD has begotten a son." Indeed, they are liars.
وَلَدَwalada"[He] begot (a son)ٱللَّهُl-lahuGod."وَإِنَّهُمْwa-innahumAnd indeed, they (are)لَكَـٰذِبُونَlakādhibūnasurely liars. ﴿١٥٢﴾
[37:153] Did He choose the girls over the boys?
أَصْطَفَىaṣṭafāHas He choseٱلْبَنَاتِl-banātithe daughtersعَلَىʿalāoverٱلْبَنِينَl-banīnathe sons? ﴿١٥٣﴾
[37:154] What is wrong with your logic?
مَاmāWhat (is) لَكُمْlakumwith you [all]كَيْفَkayfahowتَحْكُمُونَtaḥkumūnayou [all] judge? ﴿١٥٤﴾
Addressing the Disbelievers
[37:155] Why do you not take heed?
أَفَلَاafalāThen will notتَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūnayou [all] take heed? ﴿١٥٥﴾
[37:156] Do you have any proof?
أَمْamOr isلَكُمْlakumfor you [all]سُلْطَـٰنٌsul'ṭānunan authority / proofمُّبِينٌmubīnunclear? ﴿١٥٦﴾
[37:157] Show us your book, if you are truthful.
فَأْتُوا۟fatūThen bring (present) [you all]بِكِتَـٰبِكُمْbikitābikumof your book,إِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] areصَـٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful ones. ﴿١٥٧﴾
[37:158] They even invented a special relationship between Him and the jinns. The jinns themselves know that they are subservient.
وَجَعَلُوا۟wajaʿalūAnd they made / set upبَيْنَهُۥbaynahubetween Himوَبَيْنَwabaynaand betweenٱلْجِنَّةِl-jinatithe jinnsنَسَبًاnasabana kinship / (special) relationship,وَلَقَدْwalaqadbut certainly,عَلِمَتِʿalimati[it] knewٱلْجِنَّةُl-jinatuthe jinnsإِنَّهُمْinnahumindeed theyلَمُحْضَرُونَlamuḥ'ḍarūnasurely (will be) ones arraigned (subservient). ﴿١٥٨﴾
[37:159] GOD be glorified; far above their claims.
سُبْحَـٰنَsub'ḥānaGlory beٱللَّهِl-lahi(to) Godعَمَّاʿammāabove whatيَصِفُونَyaṣifūnathey claim. ﴿١٥٩﴾
[37:160] Only GOD's servants who are devoted to Him alone (are saved).
إِلَّاillāExceptعِبَادَʿibāda(the) servantsٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Godٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathose who are truly sincere / exclusively and absolutely devoted. ﴿١٦٠﴾
[37:161] Indeed, you and what you worship.
فَإِنَّكُمْfa-innakumSo indeed, you [all]وَمَاwamāand whatتَعْبُدُونَtaʿbudūnayou [all] worship. ﴿١٦١﴾
[37:162] Cannot impose anything on Him.
مَآmāNotأَنتُمْantumyou [all]عَلَيْهِʿalayhiupon Himبِفَـٰتِنِينَbifātinīnaever ones who (can) harm / impose. ﴿١٦٢﴾
[37:163] Only you will burn in Hell.
إِلَّاillāExceptمَنْmanwhoهُوَhuwahe (is)صَالِṣālito burnٱلْجَحِيمِl-jaḥīmi(in) the Hellfire. ﴿١٦٣﴾
The Angels
[37:164] Each one of us has a specific job.
وَمَاwamā"And notمِنَّآminnāamong usإِلَّاillāexceptلَهُۥlahufor him (is)مَقَامٌmaqāmuna positionمَّعْلُومٌmaʿlūmunknown / specified. ﴿١٦٤﴾
[37:165] We are the arrangers.
وَإِنَّاwa-innā"And indeed, [we]لَنَحْنُlanaḥnusurely we (are)ٱلصَّآفُّونَl-ṣāfūnathe arrangers. ﴿١٦٥﴾
[37:166] We have duly glorified (our Lord).
وَإِنَّاwa-innā"And indeed, [we]لَنَحْنُlanaḥnusurely we (are)ٱلْمُسَبِّحُونَl-musabiḥūnathose who glorify (our Lord)." ﴿١٦٦﴾
Following The Parents Blindly
[37:167] They used to say,
وَإِنwa-inAnd indeed,كَانُوا۟kānūthey used toلَيَقُولُونَlayaqūlūna[they] surely say, ﴿١٦٧﴾
[37:168] "Had we received the correct instructions from our parents,
لَوْlaw"Ifأَنَّannathatعِندَنَاʿindanāwith usذِكْرًاdhik'rana reminderمِّنَminafromٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former [ones] (people) / past generations. ﴿١٦٨﴾
[37:169] "we would have been worshipers; devoted to GOD alone."
لَكُنَّاlakunnā"Certainly, we would have beenعِبَادَʿibādaworshipersٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Godٱلْمُخْلَصِينَl-mukh'laṣīnathose who are truly sincere / exclusively and absolutely devoted." ﴿١٦٩﴾
[37:170] But they disbelieved, and they will surely find out.
فَكَفَرُوا۟fakafarūBut they disbelievedبِهِۦbihiin it,فَسَوْفَfasawfaso soonيَعْلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey will know. ﴿١٧٠﴾
Victory for the Messengers Guaranteed
[37:171] Our decision is already decreed for our servants the messengers.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,سَبَقَتْsabaqat[it] (has) preceded / predeterminedكَلِمَتُنَاkalimatunāour word / decisionلِعِبَادِنَاliʿibādināfor our servants,ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿١٧١﴾
[37:172] They are surely the victors.
إِنَّهُمْinnahumIndeed they,لَهُمُlahumusurely [they]ٱلْمَنصُورُونَl-manṣūrūna(will be) the victors. ﴿١٧٢﴾
[37:173] Our soldiers are the winners.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,جُندَنَاjundanāour soldiersلَهُمُlahumusurely they (will be)ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَl-ghālibūnathe victors / the winners. ﴿١٧٣﴾
[37:174] So disregard them for awhile.
فَتَوَلَّfatawallaSo turn awayعَنْهُمْʿanhumfrom themحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilحِينٍḥīnina time. ﴿١٧٤﴾
[37:175] Watch them; they too will watch.
وَأَبْصِرْهُمْwa-abṣir'humAnd see them,فَسَوْفَfasawfaand soonيُبْصِرُونَyub'ṣirūnathey will see. ﴿١٧٥﴾
[37:176] Do they challenge our retribution?
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَاafabiʿadhābināIs it then in our punishment / retributionيَسْتَعْجِلُونَyastaʿjilūnathey seek to hasten / challenge? ﴿١٧٦﴾
[37:177] When it hits them one day, it will be a miserable day; they have been sufficiently warned.
فَإِذَاfa-idhāBut whenنَزَلَnazalait descendedبِسَاحَتِهِمْbisāḥatihimin their territory / (the) open,فَسَآءَfasāathen miserable (will be)صَبَاحُṣabāḥu(the) morning / day (for)ٱلْمُنذَرِينَl-mundharīnathose who were warned. ﴿١٧٧﴾
[37:178] Disregard them for awhile.
وَتَوَلَّwatawallaSo turn away (disregard)عَنْهُمْʿanhumfrom themحَتَّىٰḥattātillحِينٍḥīnina time. ﴿١٧٨﴾
[37:179] Watch them; they too will watch.
وَأَبْصِرْwa-abṣirAnd see,فَسَوْفَfasawfathen soonيُبْصِرُونَyub'ṣirūnathey will see. ﴿١٧٩﴾
[37:180] Glory be to your Lord, the great Lord; far above their claims.
سُبْحَـٰنَsub'ḥānaGlory be toرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord,رَبِّrabbiLordٱلْعِزَّةِl-ʿizatithe mighty / great,عَمَّاʿammāabove whatيَصِفُونَyaṣifūnathey assert / claim. ﴿١٨٠﴾
[37:181] Peace be upon the messengers.
وَسَلَـٰمٌwasalāmunAnd peace (be)عَلَىʿalāuponٱلْمُرْسَلِينَl-mur'salīnathe messengers. ﴿١٨١﴾
[37:182] Praise be to GOD, Lord of the universe.
وَٱلْحَمْدُwal-ḥamduAnd all praise beلِلَّهِlillahito God,رَبِّrabbiLord (of)ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīnathe worlds / universe. ﴿١٨٢﴾
