In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
بِسْمِbis'miIn (the) nameٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) God,ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِl-raḥmāniMost Gracious,ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmiMost Merciful.
[23:1] Successful indeed are the believers;
قَدْqadIndeed,أَفْلَحَaflaḥasuccessful (are)ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers. ﴿١﴾
[23:2] who are reverent during their Contact Prayers (Salat).
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoهُمْhum[they] (are)فِىfīduringصَلَاتِهِمْṣalātihimtheir Contact Prayers (Salat)خَـٰشِعُونَkhāshiʿūnahumbly submissive / reverent [ones]. ﴿٢﴾
[23:3] And they avoid vain talk.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمْhum[they] (are)عَنِʿanifromٱللَّغْوِl-laghwithe vain talkمُعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūnathose who turn away / avoid. ﴿٣﴾
[23:4] And they give their obligatory charity (Zakat).
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمْhum[they] (are)لِلزَّكَوٰةِlilzzakatifor the obligatory charity (Zakat)فَـٰعِلُونَfāʿilūnadoers. ﴿٤﴾
[23:5] And they maintain their chastity.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمْhum[they] (are)لِفُرُوجِهِمْlifurūjihimof their chastityحَـٰفِظُونَḥāfiẓūnaguardians / maintainers. ﴿٥﴾
[23:6] Only with their spouses, or those who are rightfully theirs, do they have sexual relations; they are not to be blamed.
إِلَّاillāExceptعَلَىٰٓʿalāwithأَزْوَٰجِهِمْazwājihimtheir spousesأَوْaworمَاmāwhatمَلَكَتْmalakat[it] possessed / taken [as a wife]*أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْaymānuhumtheir right hands / oaths (*what is rightfully theirs / common law marriages).فَإِنَّهُمْfa-innahumThen indeed they (are)غَيْرُghayrunotمَلُومِينَmalūmīna[ones] blameworthy. ﴿٦﴾
[23:7] Those who transgress these limits are the transgressors.
فَمَنِfamaniThen whoeverٱبْتَغَىٰib'taghā[he] soughtوَرَآءَwarāabeyondذَٰلِكَdhālikathatفَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen thoseهُمُhumu[they] (are)ٱلْعَادُونَl-ʿādūnathe transgressors. ﴿٧﴾
[23:8] When it comes to deposits entrusted to them, as well as any agreements they make, they are trustworthy.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمْhum[they] (are)لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْli-amānātihimof their trustsوَعَهْدِهِمْwaʿahdihimand their promiseرَٰعُونَrāʿūnaobservers / guardians / keepers. ﴿٨﴾
[23:9] And they observe their Contact Prayers (Salat) regularly.
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمْhum[they]عَلَىٰʿalāoverصَلَوَٰتِهِمْṣalawātihimtheir Contact Prayer (Salat)يُحَافِظُونَyuḥāfiẓūnathey guard / preserve / maintain / constant. ﴿٩﴾
[23:10] Such are the inheritors.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseهُمُhumu[they] (are)ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَl-wārithūnathe inheritors. ﴿١٠﴾
[23:11] They will inherit Paradise, wherein they abide forever.
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيَرِثُونَyarithūnathey will inheritٱلْفِرْدَوْسَl-fir'dawsathe Paradise.هُمْhumTheyفِيهَاfīhāthereinخَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna[ones] abiding forever. ﴿١١﴾
Accurate Embryology
[23:12] We created the human being from a certain kind of mud.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed,خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdٱلْإِنسَـٰنَl-insānathe human beingمِنminfromسُلَـٰلَةٍsulālatinan extract (certain kind)مِّنminofطِينٍṭīninclay / mud. ﴿١٢﴾
[23:13] Subsequently, we reproduced him from a tiny drop, that is placed into a well protected repository.
ثُمَّthummaThenجَعَلْنَـٰهُjaʿalnāhuwe placed him (as)نُطْفَةًnuṭ'fatana semen-drop / tiny dropفِىfīinقَرَارٍqarārina repositoryمَّكِينٍmakīninestablished / firm place / secure. ﴿١٣﴾
[23:14] Then we developed the drop into a hanging (embryo), then developed the hanging (embryo) into a bite-size (fetus), then created the bite-size (fetus) into bones, then covered the bones with flesh. We thus produce a new creature. Most blessed is GOD, the best Creator.
ثُمَّthummaThenخَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe created / developedٱلنُّطْفَةَl-nuṭ'fatathe dropعَلَقَةًʿalaqatan(into) a clot / hanging (embryo),فَخَلَقْنَاfakhalaqnāthen we created / developedٱلْعَلَقَةَl-ʿalaqatathe clot / hanging (embryo)مُضْغَةًmuḍ'ghatan(into) an embryonic lump / bite-size fetus, فَخَلَقْنَاfakhalaqnāthen we createdٱلْمُضْغَةَl-muḍ'ghatathe embryonic lump / bite-size fetus,عِظَـٰمًاʿiẓāman(into) bones,فَكَسَوْنَاfakasawnāthen we clothed / coveredٱلْعِظَـٰمَl-ʿiẓāmathe bonesلَحْمًاlaḥman(with) flesh;ثُمَّthummathenأَنشَأْنَـٰهُanshanāhuwe produce itخَلْقًاkhalqan(as) a creationءَاخَرَākharaanother.فَتَبَارَكَfatabārakaSo [He] is Exalted / Blessedٱللَّهُl-lahuGodأَحْسَنُaḥsanu(the) Best (of)ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَl-khāliqīnathe creators. ﴿١٤﴾
[23:15] Then, later on, you die.
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّكُمinnakumIndeed, you [all]بَعْدَbaʿdaafterذَٰلِكَdhālikathatلَمَيِّتُونَlamayyitūnasurely ones who die. ﴿١٥﴾
[23:16] Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be resurrected.
ثُمَّthummaThenإِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you [all]يَوْمَyawma(on the) Day (of)ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِl-qiyāmatithe Resurrection,تُبْعَثُونَtub'ʿathūnayou [all] will be resurrected. ﴿١٦﴾
The Seven Universes
[23:17] We created above you seven universes in layers, and we are never unaware of a single creature in them.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd indeed,خَلَقْنَاkhalaqnāwe createdفَوْقَكُمْfawqakumabove you [all]سَبْعَsabʿasevenطَرَآئِقَṭarāiqapaths / ways / universesوَمَاwamāand notكُنَّاkunnāwe wereعَنِʿaniofٱلْخَلْقِl-khalqithe creationغَـٰفِلِينَghāfilīnaunaware [ones]. ﴿١٧﴾
Innumerable Blessings From God
[23:18] We send down from the sky water, in exact measure, then we store it in the ground. Certainly, we can let it escape.
وَأَنزَلْنَاwa-anzalnāAnd we sent downمِنَminafromٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe skyمَآءًۢmāanwater,بِقَدَرٍbiqadarinin precise measureفَأَسْكَنَّـٰهُfa-askannāhuthen we cause it to settleفِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe ground. وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, we (are)عَلَىٰʿalāuponذَهَابٍۭdhahābintaking awayبِهِۦbihiitلَقَـٰدِرُونَlaqādirūnacertainly able [ones]. ﴿١٨﴾
[23:19] With it, we produce for you orchards of date palms, grapes, all kinds of fruits, and various foods.
فَأَنشَأْنَاfa-anshanāThen we producedلَكُمlakumfor you [all]بِهِۦbihiby itجَنَّـٰتٍjannātingardensمِّنminofنَّخِيلٍnakhīlindate-palmsوَأَعْنَـٰبٍwa-aʿnābinand grapes,لَّكُمْlakumfor you [all],فِيهَاfīhāin it (are)فَوَٰكِهُfawākihufruitsكَثِيرَةٌkathīratunabundantوَمِنْهَاwamin'hāand from themتَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou [all] eat. ﴿١٩﴾
[23:20] Also, a tree native to Sinai produces oil, as well as relish for the eaters.
وَشَجَرَةًwashajaratanAnd a treeتَخْرُجُtakhrujuit extracts / producesمِنminfromطُورِṭūriMountسَيْنَآءَsaynāaSinaiتَنۢبُتُtanbutuit grows / producesبِٱلدُّهْنِbil-duh'ni[of the] oilوَصِبْغٍwaṣib'ghinand a relishلِّلْـَٔاكِلِينَlil'ākilīnafor the eaters. ﴿٢٠﴾
[23:21] And the livestock should provide you with a lesson. We let you drink (milk) from their bellies, you derive other benefits from them, and some of them you use for food.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,لَكُمْlakumfor you [all]فِىfīinٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِl-anʿāmithe cattle / livestock (is)لَعِبْرَةًlaʿib'ratansurely a lesson.نُّسْقِيكُمnus'qīkumWe give you [all] drinkمِّمَّاmimmāfrom what (is)فِىfīinبُطُونِهَاbuṭūnihātheir bellies,وَلَكُمْwalakumand for you [all]فِيهَاfīhāin them (are)مَنَـٰفِعُmanāfiʿubenefitsكَثِيرَةٌkathīratunmanyوَمِنْهَاwamin'hāand from themتَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou [all] eat. ﴿٢١﴾
[23:22] On them, and on the ships, you ride.
وَعَلَيْهَاwaʿalayhāAnd on themوَعَلَىwaʿalāand onٱلْفُلْكِl-ful'ki[the] shipsتُحْمَلُونَtuḥ'malūnayou [all] are carried. ﴿٢٢﴾
Noah
[23:23] We sent Noah to his people, saying, "O my people, worship GOD. You have no other god beside Him. Would you not be righteous?"
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verilyأَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentنُوحًاnūḥanNoahإِلَىٰilātoقَوْمِهِۦqawmihihis people,فَقَالَfaqālaand he said,يَـٰقَوْمِyāqawmi"O my people!ٱعْبُدُوا۟uʿ'budūWorship [you all]ٱللَّهَl-lahaGod;مَاmānotلَكُمlakumfor you [all] (is)مِّنْminanyإِلَـٰهٍilāhingodغَيْرُهُۥٓghayruhuother than Him.أَفَلَاafalāThen will notتَتَّقُونَtattaqūnayou [all] be righteous?" ﴿٢٣﴾
[23:24] The leaders who disbelieved among his people said, "This is no more than a human like you, who wants to gain prominence among you. Had GOD willed, He could have sent down angels. We never heard of anything like this from our ancestors.
فَقَالَfaqālaBut [he] saidٱلْمَلَؤُا۟l-mala-uthe chiefs / leaders (of)ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedمِنminamongقَوْمِهِۦqawmihihis people,مَاmā"Notهَـٰذَآhādhāthis (is)إِلَّاillābutبَشَرٌbasharuna manمِّثْلُكُمْmith'lukumlike you [all],يُرِيدُyurīduhe wishesأَنanthatيَتَفَضَّلَyatafaḍḍalahe asserts superiorityعَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumover you [all],وَلَوْwalawand ifشَآءَshāa[He] willedٱللَّهُl-lahuGodلَأَنزَلَla-anzalasurely He could have sent downمَلَـٰٓئِكَةًmalāikatanangels.مَّاmāNotسَمِعْنَاsamiʿ'nāwe heardبِهَـٰذَاbihādhāof thisفِىٓfībyءَابَآئِنَاābāināour forefathers (of)ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former / past [ones]. ﴿٢٤﴾
[23:25] "He is simply a man gone crazy. Just ignore him for awhile."
إِنْin"Notهُوَhuwahe (is)إِلَّاillābutرَجُلٌۢrajuluna manبِهِۦbihiin him (is)جِنَّةٌjinnatunmadness / insanity.فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟fatarabbaṣūSo you [all] waitبِهِۦbihifor himحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilحِينٍḥīnina time." ﴿٢٥﴾
[23:26] He said, "My Lord, grant me victory, for they have disbelieved me."
قَالَqālaHe said,رَبِّrabbi"My Lord!ٱنصُرْنِىunṣur'nīHelp / Vindicate meبِمَاbimābecauseكَذَّبُونِkadhabūnithey denied / disbelieved me." ﴿٢٦﴾
[23:27] We then inspired him: "Make the watercraft* under our watchful eyes, and in accordance with our inspiration. When our command comes, and the atmosphere boils up, put on it a pair of every kind (of your domesticated animals), and your family, except those condemned to be doomed. Do not speak to Me on behalf of those who transgressed; they will be drowned.
فَأَوْحَيْنَآfa-awḥaynāSo we inspiredإِلَيْهِilayhito him,أَنِani"Thatٱصْنَعِiṣ'naʿimake / constructٱلْفُلْكَl-ful'kathe ark / shipبِأَعْيُنِنَاbi-aʿyunināunder our eyesوَوَحْيِنَاwawaḥyināand (with) our inspiration,فَإِذَاfa-idhāthen when [in the future]جَآءَjāa[it] cameأَمْرُنَاamrunāour commandوَفَارَwafāraand [it] gushed forth / boiled overٱلتَّنُّورُl-tanūruthe atmosphere,فَٱسْلُكْfa-us'lukthen insert / putفِيهَاfīhāinto itمِنminofكُلٍّkullinevery (kind of)زَوْجَيْنِzawjaynimatesٱثْنَيْنِith'naynitwoوَأَهْلَكَwa-ahlakaand your family,إِلَّاillāexceptمَنmanthoseسَبَقَsabaqa[it] precededعَلَيْهِʿalayhiagainst itٱلْقَوْلُl-qawluthe wordمِنْهُمْmin'humfor them.وَلَاwalāAnd (do) notتُخَـٰطِبْنِىtukhāṭib'nīyou address Meفِىfīconcerningٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoظَلَمُوٓا۟ẓalamūthey did wrong / transgressed,إِنَّهُمinnahumindeed, they (are)مُّغْرَقُونَmugh'raqūnathose who are drowned. ﴿٢٧﴾
*23:27 The story tellers have created a mockery of Noah's history. Noah's ark was a flat watercraft made of logs, tied together with primitive ropes (54:13), the flood was local, around the Dead Sea area, and the animals were Noah's domesticated animals.
[23:28] "Once you are settled, together with those who are with you, on the watercraft, you shall say, 'Praise GOD for saving us from the evil people.'
فَإِذَاfa-idhā"And whenٱسْتَوَيْتَis'tawaytayou settled,أَنتَantayouوَمَنwamanand whoever (is)مَّعَكَmaʿakawith youعَلَىʿalāonٱلْفُلْكِl-ful'kithe watercraft / ship,فَقُلِfaqulithen say,ٱلْحَمْدُl-ḥamdu 'All praise beلِلَّهِlillahito Godٱلَّذِىalladhīthe one whoنَجَّىٰنَاnajjānāHe saved usمِنَminafromٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmithe peopleٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers / evil [ones].' ﴿٢٨﴾
[23:29] "And say, 'My Lord, let me disembark onto a blessed location; You are the best deliverer.' "
وَقُلwaqul"And say,رَّبِّrabbi 'My Lord,أَنزِلْنِىanzil'nīsend / descend meمُنزَلًاmunzalan(to) a landing placeمُّبَارَكًاmubārakana place to be blessed,وَأَنتَwa-antaand You (are)خَيْرُkhayru(the) best (of)ٱلْمُنزِلِينَl-munzilīnathose who who send / deliverer.' " ﴿٢٩﴾
[23:30] These should provide sufficient proofs for you. We will certainly put you to the test.
إِنَّinnaIndeed,فِىfīinذَٰلِكَdhālikathat (are)لَـَٔايَـٰتٍlaāyātinsurely signs / proofs,وَإِنwa-inand indeed,كُنَّاkunnāwe wereلَمُبْتَلِينَlamub'talīnasurely ones who test. ﴿٣٠﴾
[23:31] Subsequently, we established another generation after them.
ثُمَّthummaThenأَنشَأْنَاanshanāwe producedمِنۢminfromبَعْدِهِمْbaʿdihimafter themقَرْنًاqarnana generationءَاخَرِينَākharīnaothers. ﴿٣١﴾
[23:32] We sent to them a messenger from among them, saying, "You shall worship GOD. You have no other god beside Him. Would you not be righteous?"
فَأَرْسَلْنَاfa-arsalnāAnd we sentفِيهِمْfīhimamong themرَسُولًاrasūlana messengerمِّنْهُمْmin'humfrom them(selves)أَنِani[that]ٱعْبُدُوا۟uʿ'budū"Worship [you all]ٱللَّهَl-lahaGod;مَاmānotلَكُمlakumfor you [all] (is)مِّنْminanyإِلَـٰهٍilāhingodغَيْرُهُۥٓghayruhuother than Him.أَفَلَاafalāThen will notتَتَّقُونَtattaqūnayou [all] be righteous?" ﴿٣٢﴾
[23:33] The leaders among his people who disbelieved and rejected the idea of the Hereafter - although we provided for them generously in this life - said, "This is no more than a human being like you. He eats from what you eat, and drinks as you drink.
وَقَالَwaqālaAnd [he] saidٱلْمَلَأُl-mala-uthe chiefs / leadersمِنminofقَوْمِهِqawmihihis peopleٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathe ones whoكَفَرُوا۟kafarū[they] disbelievedوَكَذَّبُوا۟wakadhabūand they denied / rejectedبِلِقَآءِbiliqāiin (the) meeting (of)ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِl-ākhiratithe Hereafter,وَأَتْرَفْنَـٰهُمْwa-atrafnāhumwhile we gave ease and comfort to themفِىfīinٱلْحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayatithe life (of)ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe world,مَاmā"Not (is)هَـٰذَآhādhāthisإِلَّاillābutبَشَرٌbasharuna manمِّثْلُكُمْmith'lukumlike you [all].يَأْكُلُyakuluHe eatsمِمَّاmimmāof whatتَأْكُلُونَtakulūnayou [all] eatمِنْهُmin'hufrom it,وَيَشْرَبُwayashrabuand he drinksمِمَّاmimmāof whatتَشْرَبُونَtashrabūnayou [all] drink. ﴿٣٣﴾
[23:34] "If you obey a human being like you, then you are really losers.
وَلَئِنْwala-in"And surely ifأَطَعْتُمaṭaʿtumyou [all] obeyedبَشَرًاbasharana human beingمِّثْلَكُمْmith'lakumlike you [all],إِنَّكُمْinnakumIndeed, you [all]إِذًاidhanthen (will be)لَّخَـٰسِرُونَlakhāsirūnasurely losers. ﴿٣٤﴾
[23:35] "Does he promise you that, after you die and turn into dust and bones, you will come out again?
أَيَعِدُكُمْayaʿidukum"Does he promise you [all]أَنَّكُمْannakumthat [you all]إِذَاidhāwhenمِتُّمْmittumyou [all] are deadوَكُنتُمْwakuntumand you [all] becameتُرَابًاturābandustوَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanand bonesأَنَّكُمannakumthat you [all]مُّخْرَجُونَmukh'rajūna(will be) those who come out? ﴿٣٥﴾
[23:36] "Impossible, impossible indeed is what is promised to you.
هَيْهَاتَhayhāta"Far-(fetched) / (*Impossible),هَيْهَاتَhayhātaFar-(fetched) / (*impossible),لِمَاlimāthat whichتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou [all] are promised! ﴿٣٦﴾
[23:37] "We only live this life - we live and die - and we will never be resurrected.
إِنْin"Notهِىَhiyait (is)إِلَّاillābutحَيَاتُنَاḥayātunāour life (of)ٱلدُّنْيَاl-dun'yāthe world,نَمُوتُnamūtuwe dieوَنَحْيَاwanaḥyāand we live,وَمَاwamāand not (are)نَحْنُnaḥnuweبِمَبْعُوثِينَbimabʿūthīnaever those resurrected. ﴿٣٧﴾
[23:38] "He is just a man who fabricated lies and attributed them to GOD. We will never believe him."
إِنْin"Notهُوَhuwa(is) heإِلَّاillābutرَجُلٌrajuluna manٱفْتَرَىٰif'tarā(who) [he] fabricatedعَلَىʿalāaboutٱللَّهِl-lahiGodكَذِبًاkadhibana lie,وَمَاwamāand notنَحْنُnaḥnuwe (are)لَهُۥlahuin himبِمُؤْمِنِينَbimu'minīnaever believers." ﴿٣٨﴾
[23:39] He said, "My Lord, grant me victory, for they have disbelieved me."
قَالَqālaHe said,رَبِّrabbi"My Lord!ٱنصُرْنِىunṣur'nīHelp / Vindicate meبِمَاbimābecauseكَذَّبُونِkadhabūnithey denied / disbelieved me." ﴿٣٩﴾
[23:40] He said, "Soon they will be sorry."
قَالَqālaHe said,عَمَّاʿammā"after what (was)قَلِيلٍqalīlina little (while)لَّيُصْبِحُنَّlayuṣ'biḥunnasurely they will becomeنَـٰدِمِينَnādimīna[ones] regretful / remorseful / sorry." ﴿٤٠﴾
[23:41] The retribution struck them, equitably, and thus, we turned them into ruins. The wicked people perished.
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُfa-akhadhathumuSo [it] struck themٱلصَّيْحَةُl-ṣayḥatuthe blast / disaster (retribution)بِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin [the] justice (*justly / equitably),فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْfajaʿalnāhumand we made themغُثَآءًghuthāanrubbish / ruins.فَبُعْدًاfabuʿ'danSo away / perishedلِّلْقَوْمِlil'qawmiwith the peopleٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers. ﴿٤١﴾
[23:42] Subsequently, we established other generations after them.
ثُمَّthummaThenأَنشَأْنَاanshanāwe producedمِنۢminfromبَعْدِهِمْbaʿdihimafter themقُرُونًاqurūnana generationءَاخَرِينَākharīnaothers. ﴿٤٢﴾
[23:43] No community can advance its predetermined fate, nor delay it.
مَاmāNotتَسْبِقُtasbiqu[it] (can) advanceمِنْminanyأُمَّةٍummatincommunityأَجَلَهَاajalahāits term,وَمَاwamāand notيَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَyastakhirūnathey can delay (it). ﴿٤٣﴾
[23:44] Then we sent our messengers in succession. Every time a messenger went to his community, they disbelieved him. Consequently, we annihilated them, one after the other, and made them history. The people who disbelieved have perished.
ثُمَّthummaThenأَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentرُسُلَنَاrusulanāour messengersتَتْرَاtatrā(in) succession.كُلَّkulla All*مَاmāwhen (*Whenever)جَآءَjāa[it] cameأُمَّةًummatan(to) a communityرَّسُولُهَاrasūluhāits messenger,كَذَّبُوهُkadhabūhuthey denied / rejected him,فَأَتْبَعْنَاfa-atbaʿnāso we made followبَعْضَهُمbaʿḍahumsome of themبَعْضًاbaʿḍan(to) some others,وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْwajaʿalnāhumand we made themأَحَادِيثَaḥādīthahistory.فَبُعْدًاfabuʿ'danSo away / perishedلِّقَوْمٍliqawminwith a peopleلَّاlānotيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe. ﴿٤٤﴾
Moses and Aaron
[23:45] Then we sent Moses and his brother Aaron with our revelations and a profound proof.
ثُمَّthummaThenأَرْسَلْنَاarsalnāwe sentمُوسَىٰmūsāMosesوَأَخَاهُwa-akhāhuand his brotherهَـٰرُونَhārūnaAaronبِـَٔايَـٰتِنَاbiāyātināwith our signs وَسُلْطَـٰنٍwasul'ṭāninand an authority / proofمُّبِينٍmubīninclear. ﴿٤٥﴾
[23:46] To Pharaoh and his elders, but they turned arrogant. They were oppressive people.
إِلَىٰilāToفِرْعَوْنَfir'ʿawnaPharaohوَمَلَإِي۟هِۦwamala-ihiand his chiefs / elders,فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟fa-is'takbarūbut they turned arrogantوَكَانُوا۟wakānūand they wereقَوْمًاqawmana peopleعَالِينَʿālīna[ones] haughty / oppressive. ﴿٤٦﴾
[23:47] They said, "Shall we believe for two men whose people are our slaves?"
فَقَالُوٓا۟faqālūThen they said,أَنُؤْمِنُanu'minu"Shall we believeلِبَشَرَيْنِlibasharaynifor two menمِثْلِنَاmith'linālike us (ourselves)وَقَوْمُهُمَاwaqawmuhumāwhile [both] their peopleلَنَاlanāfor us (are)عَـٰبِدُونَʿābidūnaslaves." ﴿٤٧﴾
[23:48] They rejected the two, and consequently, they were annihilated.
فَكَذَّبُوهُمَاfakadhabūhumāSo they denied / rejected both of themفَكَانُوا۟fakānūand they wereمِنَminaamongٱلْمُهْلَكِينَl-muh'lakīnathose who were destroyed / annihilated. ﴿٤٨﴾
[23:49] We gave Moses the scripture, that they may be guided.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verily,ءَاتَيْنَاātaynāwe gaveمُوسَىmūsāMosesٱلْكِتَـٰبَl-kitābathe scriptureلَعَلَّهُمْlaʿallahumso that they mayيَهْتَدُونَyahtadūna[they] be guided. ﴿٤٩﴾
[23:50] We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and we gave them refuge on a mesa with food and drink.
وَجَعَلْنَاwajaʿalnāAnd we madeٱبْنَib'na(the) sonمَرْيَمَmaryama(of) Maryوَأُمَّهُۥٓwa-ummahuand his motherءَايَةًāyatana sign,وَءَاوَيْنَـٰهُمَآwaāwaynāhumāand we sheltered them bothإِلَىٰilātoرَبْوَةٍrabwatina high ground / mesa ذَاتِdhātiit possessingقَرَارٍqarārina refugeوَمَعِينٍwamaʿīninand water springs. ﴿٥٠﴾
One God/One Religion
[23:51] O you messengers, eat from the good provisions, and work righteousness. I am fully aware of everything you do.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāOٱلرُّسُلُl-rusulu[the] messengers!كُلُوا۟kulūEat [you all]مِنَminaofٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِl-ṭayibātithe good things / provisionsوَٱعْمَلُوا۟wa-iʿ'malūand do / work [you all]صَـٰلِحًاṣāliḥanrighteous (deeds).إِنِّىinnīIndeed, I amبِمَاbimāof whatتَعْمَلُونَtaʿmalūnayou [all] doعَلِيمٌʿalīmunAll-Knower. ﴿٥١﴾
[23:52] Such is your congregation - one congregation - and I am your Lord; you shall reverence Me.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeedهَـٰذِهِۦٓhādhihithis,أُمَّتُكُمْummatukumyour congregation,أُمَّةًummatan(is) congregationوَٰحِدَةًwāḥidatanone.وَأَنَا۠wa-anāAnd I amرَبُّكُمْrabbukumyour Lord,فَٱتَّقُونِfa-ittaqūniSo reverence Me [you all]. ﴿٥٢﴾
[23:53] But they tore themselves into disputing factions; each party happy with what they have.
فَتَقَطَّعُوٓا۟fataqaṭṭaʿūBut they severed / toreأَمْرَهُمamrahumtheir affair (of unity)بَيْنَهُمْbaynahumbetween themزُبُرًاzuburan(into) sects / factions,كُلُّkullueachحِزْبٍۭḥiz'binpartyبِمَاbimāin what (is)لَدَيْهِمْladayhimwith themفَرِحُونَfariḥūna[ones] rejoicing. ﴿٥٣﴾
[23:54] Therefore, just leave them in their confusion, for awhile.
فَذَرْهُمْfadharhumSo leave themفِىfīinغَمْرَتِهِمْghamratihimtheir confusionحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilحِينٍḥīnina time. ﴿٥٤﴾
[23:55] Do they think that, since we provided them with money and children,
أَيَحْسَبُونَayaḥsabūnaDo they thinkأَنَّمَاannamāas though (because)نُمِدُّهُمnumidduhumwe extend to themبِهِۦbihi[with it]مِنminofمَّالٍmālinwealth / moneyوَبَنِينَwabanīnaand children ﴿٥٥﴾
[23:56] we must be showering them with blessings? Indeed, they have no idea.
نُسَارِعُnusāriʿuwe hastenلَهُمْlahumto themفِىfīinٱلْخَيْرَٰتِl-khayrātithe good things?بَلbalNay,لَّاlānotيَشْعُرُونَyashʿurūnathey perceive. ﴿٥٦﴾
[23:57] Surely, those who are reverently conscious of their Lord,
إِنَّinnaIndeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoهُمhum[they]مِّنْminfromخَشْيَةِkhashyati(the) reverence (of)رَبِّهِمrabbihimtheir Lord (are)مُّشْفِقُونَmush'fiqūnathose who are anxious / conscious. ﴿٥٧﴾
[23:58] And who believe in the revelations of their Lord,
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd thoseهُمhum[they]بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiāyātiin (the) signs / revelations (of)رَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe. ﴿٥٨﴾
[23:59] And who never set up any idols beside their Lord,
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd thoseهُمhum[they]بِرَبِّهِمْbirabbihimwith their Lordلَاlā(do) notيُشْرِكُونَyush'rikūna[they] associate partners / idols. ﴿٥٩﴾
[23:60] As they give their charities, their hearts are fully reverent. For they recognize that they will be summoned before their Lord,
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoيُؤْتُونَyu'tūnathey giveمَآmāwhatءَاتَوا۟ātawthey gaveوَّقُلُوبُهُمْwaqulūbuhumwhile their hearts (are)وَجِلَةٌwajilatunfearful / reverent,أَنَّهُمْannahumthat they (are)إِلَىٰilātoرَبِّهِمْrabbihimtheir Lordرَٰجِعُونَrājiʿūnaones returning. ﴿٦٠﴾
[23:61] They are eager to do righteous works; they compete in doing them.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَulāika(It is) thoseيُسَـٰرِعُونَyusāriʿūnathey hastenفِىfīinٱلْخَيْرَٰتِl-khayrātithe righteous worksوَهُمْwahumand they (are)لَهَاlahāin itسَـٰبِقُونَsābiqūnaforemost / forerunners. ﴿٦١﴾
The Disbelievers Unappreciative
[23:62] We never burden any soul beyond its means, and we keep a record that utters the truth. No one will suffer injustice.
وَلَاwalāAnd notنُكَلِّفُnukallifuwe burdenنَفْسًاnafsanany soulإِلَّاillāexceptوُسْعَهَاwus'ʿahā(to) its capacity,وَلَدَيْنَاwaladaynāand with us (is)كِتَـٰبٌkitābuna recordيَنطِقُyanṭiquit speaks / uttersبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truth (*truthfully);وَهُمْwahumand theyلَاlā(will) notيُظْلَمُونَyuẓ'lamūna[they] be wronged / suffer injustice. ﴿٦٢﴾
[23:63] Because their minds are oblivious to this, they commit works that do not conform with this; their works are evil.
بَلْbalNay,قُلُوبُهُمْqulūbuhumtheir hearts / mindsفِىfī(are) inغَمْرَةٍghamratinconfusion / obliviousمِّنْminofهَـٰذَاhādhāthis,وَلَهُمْwalahumand for them (are)أَعْمَـٰلٌaʿmālundeedsمِّنminfromدُونِdūnibesidesذَٰلِكَdhālikathat,هُمْhumthey (are)لَهَاlahāfor itعَـٰمِلُونَʿāmilūnadoers. ﴿٦٣﴾
[23:64] Then, when we requite their leaders with retribution, they complain.
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntilإِذَآidhāwhenأَخَذْنَاakhadhnāwe seized / requitedمُتْرَفِيهِمmut'rafīhimtheir affluent ones / leadersبِٱلْعَذَابِbil-ʿadhābiwith the retribution,إِذَاidhābehold!هُمْhumTheyيَجْـَٔرُونَyajarūna[they] complain. ﴿٦٤﴾
[23:65] Do not complain now; you have given up all help from us.
لَاlā"(Do) notتَجْـَٔرُوا۟tajarūyou [all] complainٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatoday.إِنَّكُمinnakumIndeed, you [all]مِّنَّاminnāfrom usلَاlānotتُنصَرُونَtunṣarūna[you all] will be helped. ﴿٦٥﴾
[23:66] My proofs have been presented to you, but you turned back on your heels.
قَدْqadVerily,كَانَتْkānat[it] wasءَايَـٰتِىāyātīMy verses / proofsتُتْلَىٰtut'lāit is recited (presented)عَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumto you [all],فَكُنتُمْfakuntumbut you [all] usedعَلَىٰٓʿalā(to) onأَعْقَـٰبِكُمْaʿqābikumyour heelsتَنكِصُونَtankiṣūnayou [all] turn back. ﴿٦٦﴾
[23:67] You were too arrogant to accept them, and you defiantly disregarded them.
مُسْتَكْبِرِينَmus'takbirīnaThose who are arrogantبِهِۦbihiabout it,سَـٰمِرًاsāmirantalking nonsense [by night] / dismissing hastily,تَهْجُرُونَtahjurūna[you all] leave / forsake / shun. ﴿٦٧﴾
[23:68] Why do they not reflect upon this scripture? Do they not realize that they have received something never attained by their ancestors?
أَفَلَمْafalamThen, do notيَدَّبَّرُوا۟yaddabbarūthey ponder / reflectٱلْقَوْلَl-qawlathe word / message (scripture)أَمْamor hasجَآءَهُمjāahumit came to themمَّاmāwhatلَمْlamnotيَأْتِyati[it] bringsءَابَآءَهُمُābāahumutheir forefathers / parents (of)ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former / past [ones]? ﴿٦٨﴾
[23:69] Have they failed to recognize their messenger? Is this why they are disregarding him?
أَمْamOr doلَمْlam(do) notيَعْرِفُوا۟yaʿrifūthey recognizeرَسُولَهُمْrasūlahumtheir messenger,فَهُمْfahumso theyلَهُۥlahufor himمُنكِرُونَmunkirūnathose who not recognize / deny? ﴿٦٩﴾
[23:70] Have they decided that he is crazy? Indeed, he has brought the truth to them, but most of them hate the truth.
أَمْamOr doيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say,بِهِۦbihi"In him (is)جِنَّةٌۢjinnatuninsanity / madness?"بَلْbalNay,جَآءَهُمjāahumhe brought themبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin the truth,وَأَكْثَرُهُمْwa-aktharuhumbut most of them (are)لِلْحَقِّlil'ḥaqqito the truth (are)كَـٰرِهُونَkārihūna[ones] averse / hate. ﴿٧٠﴾
[23:71] Indeed, if the truth conformed to their wishes, there would be chaos in the heavens and the earth; everything in them would be corrupted. We have given them their proof, but they are disregarding their proof.
وَلَوِwalawiBut ifٱتَّبَعَittabaʿa[it] followed / conformedٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaquthe truthأَهْوَآءَهُمْahwāahum(to) their desires / wishes,لَفَسَدَتِlafasadatisurely [it] would have been corruptedٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُl-samāwātuthe heavensوَٱلْأَرْضُwal-arḍuand the earthوَمَنwamanand whoever (is)فِيهِنَّfīhinnatherein.بَلْbalNay,أَتَيْنَـٰهُمataynāhumwe brought themبِذِكْرِهِمْbidhik'rihim[in] their reminder / proof,فَهُمْfahumbut they,عَنʿanfromذِكْرِهِمdhik'rihimtheir reminder / proofمُّعْرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna[those who] are turning away / averse / avoid. ﴿٧١﴾
[23:72] Are you asking them for a wage? Your Lord's wage is far better. He is the best Provider.
أَمْamOr doتَسْـَٔلُهُمْtasaluhumyou ask them (for)خَرْجًاkharjana payment / wage?فَخَرَاجُfakharājuBut the payment / wage (of)رَبِّكَrabbikayour Lord (is)خَيْرٌkhayrunbest,وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He (is)خَيْرُkhayru(the) Best (of)ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَl-rāziqīnathe providers. ﴿٧٢﴾
[23:73] Most assuredly, you are inviting them to a straight path.
وَإِنَّكَwa-innakaAnd indeed, [you]لَتَدْعُوهُمْlatadʿūhumcertainly you call / invite themإِلَىٰilātoصِرَٰطٍṣirāṭin(the) pathمُّسْتَقِيمٍmus'taqīminstraight. ﴿٧٣﴾
[23:74] Those who disbelieve in the Hereafter will surely deviate from the right path.
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed,ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoلَاlā(do) notيُؤْمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believeبِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِbil-ākhiratiin the Hereafterعَنِʿanifromٱلصِّرَٰطِl-ṣirāṭithe path (are)لَنَـٰكِبُونَlanākibūnasurely swerving / deviating [ones]. ﴿٧٤﴾
[23:75] Even when we showered them with mercy, and relieved their problems, they plunged deeper into transgression, and continued to blunder.
وَلَوْwalawAnd ifرَحِمْنَـٰهُمْraḥim'nāhumwe had mercy on themوَكَشَفْنَاwakashafnāand we removedمَاmāwhat (was)بِهِمbihimon themمِّنminofضُرٍّḍurrin(the) hardship,لَّلَجُّوا۟lalajjūsurely they would have persistedفِىfīinطُغْيَـٰنِهِمْṭugh'yānihimtheir transgressionsيَعْمَهُونَyaʿmahūna[they] wander blindly / blunder. ﴿٧٥﴾
[23:76] Even when we afflicted them with retribution, they never turned to their Lord imploring.
وَلَقَدْwalaqadAnd verilyأَخَذْنَـٰهُمakhadhnāhumwe seized / afflicted themبِٱلْعَذَابِbil-ʿadhābiwith the retribution,فَمَاfamābut notٱسْتَكَانُوا۟is'takānūthey gave in / submittedلِرَبِّهِمْlirabbihimto their Lordوَمَاwamāand notيَتَضَرَّعُونَyataḍarraʿūnathey implore. ﴿٧٦﴾
[23:77] Subsequently, when we requited them with the severe retribution they had incurred, they were shocked.
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntilإِذَاidhāwhenفَتَحْنَاfataḥnāwe openedعَلَيْهِمʿalayhimfor themبَابًاbābana gateذَاdhāofعَذَابٍʿadhābinretributionشَدِيدٍshadīdinsevere.إِذَاidhāBehold!هُمْhumThey (are)فِيهِfīhiin itمُبْلِسُونَmub'lisūnathose utterly stunned / dumbfounded. ﴿٧٧﴾
[23:78] He is the One who granted you the hearing, the eyesight, and the brains. Rarely are you appreciative.
وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He (is)ٱلَّذِىٓalladhīthe One whoأَنشَأَansha-aHe produced / grantedلَكُمُlakumufor you [all]ٱلسَّمْعَl-samʿathe hearingوَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَwal-abṣāraand the sightوَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَwal-afidataand the feeling / brains;قَلِيلًاqalīlanlittleمَّاmā(is) whatتَشْكُرُونَtashkurūnayou [all] are appreciative. ﴿٧٨﴾
[23:79] He is the One who established you on earth, and before Him you will be summoned.
وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He (is)ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One whoذَرَأَكُمْdhara-akumHe multiplied (established) you [all]فِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earthوَإِلَيْهِwa-ilayhiand to Himتُحْشَرُونَtuḥ'sharūnayou [all] will be summoned. ﴿٧٩﴾
[23:80] He is the One who controls life and death, and He is the One who alternates the night and day. Do you not understand?
وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He (is)ٱلَّذِىalladhīthe One whoيُحْىِۦyuḥ'yīHe gives lifeوَيُمِيتُwayumītuand He causes deathوَلَهُwalahuand for Him (is)ٱخْتِلَـٰفُikh'tilāfu(the) alternation (of)ٱلَّيْلِal-laylithe nightوَٱلنَّهَارِwal-nahāriand the day.أَفَلَاafalāThen will notتَعْقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou [all] understand? ﴿٨٠﴾
[23:81] They said what their ancestors said.
بَلْbalNay,قَالُوا۟qālūThey saidمِثْلَmith'la(the) likeمَاmā(of) whatقَالَqāla[he] saidٱلْأَوَّلُونَl-awalūnathe former [ones] / ancestors. ﴿٨١﴾
[23:82] They said, "After we die and become dust and bones, we get resurrected?
قَالُوٓا۟qālūThey said,أَءِذَاa-idhā"What! When [in the future]مِتْنَاmit'nāwe diedوَكُنَّاwakunnāand we becameتُرَابًاturābandustوَعِظَـٰمًاwaʿiẓāmanand bones,أَءِنَّاa-innāwould weلَمَبْعُوثُونَlamabʿūthūnasurely be those resurrected? ﴿٨٢﴾
[23:83] "Such promises were given to us and to our parents in the past. These are no more than tales from the past."
لَقَدْlaqad"Verily,وُعِدْنَاwuʿid'nāwe were promisedنَحْنُnaḥnu[we]وَءَابَآؤُنَاwaābāunāand our forefathers / parentsهَـٰذَاhādhāthisمِنminfromقَبْلُqablubefore;إِنْinnotهَـٰذَآhādhā(is) thisإِلَّآillābutأَسَـٰطِيرُasāṭīru(the) tales (of)ٱلْأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe past [ones]." ﴿٨٣﴾
Most Believers are Destined for Hell*
[23:84] Say, "To whom belongs the earth and everyone on it, if you know?"
قُلqulSay,لِّمَنِlimani"To whom (belongs)ٱلْأَرْضُl-arḍuthe earthوَمَنwamanand whoever (is)فِيهَآfīhāin it,إِنinifكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] [happen]تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna[you all] know?" ﴿٨٤﴾
*23:84-89 Belief in God is valid only if one recognizes God's qualities, such as the fact that God controls everything (8:17). Believers who do not know God are not really believers. Most believers nullify their belief by idolizing such powerless idols as the prophets and saints (6:106).
[23:85] They will say, "To GOD." Say, "Why then do you not take heed?"
سَيَقُولُونَsayaqūlūnaThey will say,لِلَّهِlillahi"[To] God."قُلْqulSay,أَفَلَاafalā"Then will notتَذَكَّرُونَtadhakkarūnayou [all] take heed?" ﴿٨٥﴾
[23:86] Say, "Who is the Lord of the seven universes; the Lord of the great dominion?"
قُلْqulSay,مَنman"Who (is)رَّبُّrabbuLord (of)ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavens / universesٱلسَّبْعِl-sabʿithe sevenوَرَبُّwarabbuand Lord (of)ٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe Throne / dominionٱلْعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Great?" ﴿٨٦﴾
[23:87] They will say, "GOD." Say, "Why then do you not turn righteous?"
سَيَقُولُونَsayaqūlūnaThey will say,لِلَّهِlillahi"To God."قُلْqulSay,أَفَلَاafalā"Then will notتَتَّقُونَtattaqūna[you all] be righteous?" ﴿٨٧﴾
[23:88] Say, "In whose hand is all sovereignty over all things, and He is the only one who can provide help, but needs no help, if you know?"
قُلْqulSay,مَنۢmanWhoبِيَدِهِۦbiyadihiin his hand (is)مَلَكُوتُmalakūtudominions / sovereignties (of)كُلِّkulliallشَىْءٍshayinthing(s),وَهُوَwahuwaand Heيُجِيرُyujīru[He] protects,وَلَاwalāand no (one)يُجَارُyujāru[he] (can) be protectedعَلَيْهِʿalayhiagainst Him,إِنinIfكُنتُمْkuntumyou [all] [happen]تَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna[you all] know?" ﴿٨٨﴾
[23:89] They will say, "GOD." Say, "Where did you go wrong?"
سَيَقُولُونَsayaqūlūnaThey will say,لِلَّهِlillahi"[To] God."قُلْqulSay,فَأَنَّىٰfa-annā"Then how (come)تُسْحَرُونَtus'ḥarūnayou [all] are deluded / beguiled?" ﴿٨٩﴾
[23:90] We have given them the truth, while they are liars.
بَلْbalNay,أَتَيْنَـٰهُمataynāhumwe brought themبِٱلْحَقِّbil-ḥaqiwith the truth,وَإِنَّهُمْwa-innahumbut indeed, they (are)لَكَـٰذِبُونَlakādhibūnasurely liars. ﴿٩٠﴾
[23:91] GOD has never begotten a son. Nor was there ever any other god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have declared independence with his creations, and they would have competed with each other for dominance. GOD be glorified; far above their claims.
مَاmāNotٱتَّخَذَittakhadha[He] tookٱللَّهُl-lahuGodمِنminanyوَلَدٍwaladinson,وَمَاwamāand notكَانَkānait wasمَعَهُۥmaʿahuwith Himمِنْminanyإِلَـٰهٍilāhingod.إِذًاidhanThenلَّذَهَبَladhahabasurely [he] would have taken awayكُلُّkullueachإِلَـٰهٍۭilāhingodبِمَاbimā[of] whatخَلَقَkhalaqahe created,وَلَعَلَاwalaʿalāand surely [he] would have dominated,بَعْضُهُمْbaʿḍuhumsome of themعَلَىٰʿalāoverبَعْضٍbaʿḍinsome others.سُبْحَـٰنَsub'ḥānaGlory beٱللَّهِl-lahi(to) Godعَمَّاʿammāabove whatيَصِفُونَyaṣifūnathey assert / claim. ﴿٩١﴾
[23:92] The Knower of all secrets and declarations; be He exalted, far above having a partner.
عَـٰلِمِʿālimiKnower (of)ٱلْغَيْبِl-ghaybithe unseen / secretوَٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِwal-shahādatiand the testimony / declaration,فَتَعَـٰلَىٰfataʿālā[so] exalted is Heعَمَّاʿammāabove whatيُشْرِكُونَyush'rikūnathey associate. ﴿٩٢﴾
[23:93] Say, "My Lord, whether You show me (the retribution) they have incurred,
قُلqulSay,رَّبِّrabbi"My Lord!إِمَّاimmāIf / WhetherتُرِيَنِّىturiyannīYou show meمَاmāwhatيُوعَدُونَyūʿadūnathey are promised ﴿٩٣﴾
[23:94] "My Lord, let me not be one of the transgressing people."
رَبِّrabbi"My Lord,فَلَاfalāthen (do) notتَجْعَلْنِىtajʿalnīYou place meفِىfīamongٱلْقَوْمِl-qawmithe peopleٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers / transgressors." ﴿٩٤﴾
[23:95] To show you (the retribution) we have reserved for them is something we can easily do.
وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed weعَلَىٰٓʿalāuponأَنanthatنُّرِيَكَnuriyakawe show youمَاmāwhatنَعِدُهُمْnaʿiduhumwe promise themلَقَـٰدِرُونَlaqādirūnasurely able [ones]. ﴿٩٥﴾
[23:96] Therefore, counter their evil works with goodness; we are fully aware of their claims.
ٱدْفَعْid'faʿCounterبِٱلَّتِىbi-allatīby whichهِىَhiyait (is)أَحْسَنُaḥsanugood / bestٱلسَّيِّئَةَl-sayi-atathe evil.نَحْنُnaḥnuWeأَعْلَمُaʿlamuknow bestبِمَاbimāof whatيَصِفُونَyaṣifūnathey assert / claim. ﴿٩٦﴾
To Be Protected From Satan
[23:97] Say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the whispers of the devils.
وَقُلwaqulAnd say,رَّبِّrabbi"My Lord!أَعُوذُaʿūdhuI seek refugeبِكَbikain Youمِنْminfromهَمَزَٰتِhamazātisuggestions / whispers (of)ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِl-shayāṭīnithe devils. ﴿٩٧﴾
[23:98] "And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they come near me."
وَأَعُوذُwa-aʿūdhu"And I seek refugeبِكَbikain You,رَبِّrabbimy Lord,أَنanlestيَحْضُرُونِyaḥḍurūnithey come near / approach me." ﴿٩٨﴾
The Dead Never Come Back Until the Day of Resurrection
[23:99] When death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back.
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntilإِذَاidhāwhen [in the future]جَآءَjāa[it] cameأَحَدَهُمُaḥadahumu(to) one of themٱلْمَوْتُl-mawtuthe deathقَالَqālahe (will) say,رَبِّrabbi"My Lord!ٱرْجِعُونِir'jiʿūniSend me back. ﴿٩٩﴾
[23:100] "I will then work righteousness in everything I left." Not true. This is a false claim that he makes. A barrier will separate his soul from this world until resurrection.
لَعَلِّىٓlaʿallī"That I mayأَعْمَلُaʿmalu[I] doصَـٰلِحًاṣāliḥanrighteous (deeds)فِيمَاfīmāin whatتَرَكْتُtaraktuI left behind."كَلَّآkallāNo!إِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it (is)كَلِمَةٌkalimatuna word (claim)هُوَhuwahe*قَآئِلُهَاqāiluhā[he] spoke it (*he makes).وَمِنwaminAnd fromوَرَآئِهِمwarāihimbehind them (is)بَرْزَخٌbarzakhuna barrierإِلَىٰilātillيَوْمِyawmi(the) Dayيُبْعَثُونَyub'ʿathūnathey are resurrected. ﴿١٠٠﴾
[23:101] When the horn is blown, no relations among them will exist on that day, nor will they care about one another.
فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo whenنُفِخَnufikha[it] was blownفِىfīinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe hornفَلَآfalāthen noأَنسَابَansābaties of kinship / relationship بَيْنَهُمْbaynahumamong themيَوْمَئِذٍyawma-idhinthat Day,وَلَاwalāand notيَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnathey will ask one another. ﴿١٠١﴾
[23:102] As for those whose weights are heavy, they will be the winners.
فَمَنfamanThen (the one) whoseثَقُلَتْthaqulat[it] became heavyمَوَٰزِينُهُۥmawāzīnuhuhis scales,فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen thoseهُمُhumuthey (are)ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūnathe successful ones / winners. ﴿١٠٢﴾
[23:103] Those whose weights are light are the ones who lost their souls; they abide in Hell forever.
وَمَنْwamanBut (the one) whoseخَفَّتْkhaffat[it] became lightمَوَٰزِينُهُۥmawāzīnuhuhis scales,فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَfa-ulāikathen thoseٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathe ones whoخَسِرُوٓا۟khasirūthey lostأَنفُسَهُمْanfusahumtheir souls.فِىfīInجَهَنَّمَjahannamaHellخَـٰلِدُونَkhālidūna[ones] abiding forever. ﴿١٠٣﴾
[23:104] Fire will overwhelm their faces, and they last miserably therein.
تَلْفَحُtalfaḥu[It] will burnوُجُوهَهُمُwujūhahumutheir facesٱلنَّارُl-nāruthe Fire / Hell, وَهُمْwahumand theyفِيهَاfīhāin itكَـٰلِحُونَkāliḥūnaones who grin / frown (from pain and misery). ﴿١٠٤﴾
[23:105] Were not My revelations recited to you, and you kept on rejecting them?
أَلَمْalamWere notتَكُنْtakun[it is]ءَايَـٰتِىāyātīMy verses / revelationsتُتْلَىٰtut'lā[it is] recitedعَلَيْكُمْʿalaykumto you [all],فَكُنتُمfakuntumand you [all] used (to)بِهَاbihāin itتُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūna[you all] deny / reject? ﴿١٠٥﴾
[23:106] They will say, "Our Lord, our wickedness overwhelmed us, and we were people gone astray.
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,رَبَّنَاrabbanā"Our Lord!غَلَبَتْghalabat[It] overcame / overwhelmedعَلَيْنَاʿalaynā[upon] usشِقْوَتُنَاshiq'watunāour wickedness,وَكُنَّاwakunnāand we wereقَوْمًاqawmana peopleضَآلِّينَḍāllīna[ones] astray. ﴿١٠٦﴾
[23:107] "Our Lord, take us out of this; if we return (to our old behavior), then we are really wicked."
رَبَّنَآrabbanā"Our Lord!أَخْرِجْنَاakhrij'nāBring us outمِنْهَاmin'hāfrom it,فَإِنْfa-inthen ifعُدْنَاʿud'nāwe returnedفَإِنَّاfa-innāthen indeed, weظَـٰلِمُونَẓālimūna(would be) wrongdoers." ﴿١٠٧﴾
[23:108] He will say, "Abide therein, humiliated, and do not speak to Me.
قَالَqālaHe said,ٱخْسَـُٔوا۟ikh'saū"Remain despised [you all]فِيهَاfīhāin itوَلَاwalāand (do) notتُكَلِّمُونِtukallimūniyou [all] speak to Me. ﴿١٠٨﴾
They Ridiculed the Believers
[23:109] "A group of My servants used to say, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and shower us with mercy. Of all the merciful ones, You are the Most Merciful.'
إِنَّهُۥinnahu"Indeed, [it]كَانَkāna[it] wasفَرِيقٌfarīquna groupمِّنْminofعِبَادِىʿibādīMy servantsيَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say,رَبَّنَآrabbanā 'Our Lord!ءَامَنَّاāmannāWe believed,فَٱغْفِرْfa-igh'firso forgiveلَنَاlanā[for] usوَٱرْحَمْنَاwa-ir'ḥamnāand have mercy on us,وَأَنتَwa-antaand You (are)خَيْرُkhayruBest (of)ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَl-rāḥimīnathe merciful ones.' ﴿١٠٩﴾
[23:110] "But you mocked and ridiculed them, to the extent that you forgot Me. You used to laugh at them.
فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْfa-ittakhadhtumūhum"But you [all] took themسِخْرِيًّاsikh'riyyan(in) mockery / ridiculeحَتَّىٰٓḥattāuntilأَنسَوْكُمْansawkumthey made you [all] forgetذِكْرِىdhik'rīMy remembrance,وَكُنتُمwakuntumand you [all] used toمِّنْهُمْmin'humat themتَضْحَكُونَtaḍḥakūna[you all] laugh. ﴿١١٠﴾
[23:111] "I have rewarded them today, in return for their steadfastness, by making them the winners."
إِنِّىinnī"Indeed, Iجَزَيْتُهُمُjazaytuhumu[I] rewarded themٱلْيَوْمَl-yawmatodayبِمَاbimābecauseصَبَرُوٓا۟ṣabarūthey were steadfast,أَنَّهُمْannahumthat theyهُمُhumu[they] (are)ٱلْفَآئِزُونَl-fāizūnathe successful ones / winners." ﴿١١١﴾
[23:112] He said, "How long have you lasted on earth? How many years?"
قَـٰلَqālaHe said,كَمْkam"How long (did)لَبِثْتُمْlabith'tumyou [all] stayed / remainedفِىfīinٱلْأَرْضِl-arḍithe earth,عَدَدَʿadada(in) number (of)سِنِينَsinīnayears?" ﴿١١٢﴾
[23:113] They said, "We lasted a day or part of a day. Ask those who counted."
قَالُوا۟qālūThey said,لَبِثْنَاlabith'nā"We stayed / remainedيَوْمًاyawmana dayأَوْaworبَعْضَbaʿḍaa portion / part (of)يَوْمٍyawmina day;فَسْـَٔلِfasalibut askٱلْعَآدِّينَl-ʿādīnathose who counted." ﴿١١٣﴾
[23:114] He said, "In fact, you stayed but a brief interim, if you only knew.
قَـٰلَqālaHe said,إِنin"Notلَّبِثْتُمْlabith'tumyou [all] stayedإِلَّاillābutقَلِيلًاqalīlana little,لَّوْlawifأَنَّكُمْannakumonly you [all]كُنتُمْkuntum[you all] were toتَعْلَمُونَtaʿlamūna[you all] know. ﴿١١٤﴾
[23:115] "Did you think that we created you in vain; that you were not to be returned to us?"
أَفَحَسِبْتُمْafaḥasib'tum"Then did you [all] thinkأَنَّمَاannamāthat onlyخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْkhalaqnākumwe created you [all]عَبَثًاʿabathanwithout purpose / in vain وَأَنَّكُمْwa-annakumand that you [all]إِلَيْنَاilaynāto usلَاlānotتُرْجَعُونَtur'jaʿūna[you all] will return?" ﴿١١٥﴾
[23:116] Most exalted is GOD, the true Sovereign. There is no other god beside Him; the Most Honorable Lord, possessor of all authority.
فَتَعَـٰلَىfataʿālāSo [He] is exaltedٱللَّهُl-lahuGod,ٱلْمَلِكُl-malikuthe King / Sovereignٱلْحَقُّl-ḥaquthe True.لَآlā(There is) noإِلَـٰهَilāhagodإِلَّاillāexceptهُوَhuwaHim,رَبُّrabbuLord (of)ٱلْعَرْشِl-ʿarshithe Throneٱلْكَرِيمِl-karīmi[the] Honorable. ﴿١١٦﴾
[23:117] Anyone who idolizes beside GOD any other god, and without any kind of proof, his reckoning rests with his Lord. The disbelievers never succeed.
وَمَنwamanAnd whoeverيَدْعُyadʿuhe invokes / idolizesمَعَmaʿawithٱللَّهِl-lahiGodإِلَـٰهًاilāhangodءَاخَرَākharaother,لَاlānoبُرْهَـٰنَbur'hānaevidence / proofلَهُۥlahufor himبِهِۦbihiin it.فَإِنَّمَاfa-innamāThen onlyحِسَابُهُۥḥisābuhuhis reckoning (is)عِندَʿindawithرَبِّهِۦٓrabbihihis Lord.إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, [he]لَاlānotيُفْلِحُyuf'liḥu[he] succeeds,ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers. ﴿١١٧﴾
[23:118] Say, "My Lord, shower us with forgiveness and mercy. Of all the merciful ones, You are the Most Merciful."
وَقُلwaqulAnd say,رَّبِّrabbi"My Lord!ٱغْفِرْigh'firForgiveوَٱرْحَمْwa-ir'ḥamand have mercy,وَأَنتَwa-antaand You (are)خَيْرُkhayru(the) Best (of)ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَl-rāḥimīnathe merciful ones." ﴿١١٨﴾
